“My first Ryokan experience. It was amazing!”
Reviewed January 21, 2012

It was our first time travelling to Takayama and our first time staying at a Ryokan. We thought we would give it a go and experience what its like.

Although it was a bit pricey, we paid $680 per night (which includes Dinner and Breakfast), we thought it was worth the money.

Service was exellent, couldn't ask for anything better! We arrived at Takayama via the JR and was met at the JR station by a Hidatei Hanaougi driver holding a sign. We didn't expect them to pick up us but they did and drove us to the Ryokan. We were then received and welcomed by 3 ladies in Kimonos, taking our luggage and offering us hot tea as it was snowing outside.

Although their english level were quite poor, we could see that they were trying their hardest to explain and communicate with us.

Dinner and breakfast was not the best but it was still quite good. We had a Kaiseki (Japanese Traditional cuisine) dinner.

The rooms were beatuiful with the traditional tatami mats and the onsen was outside on the terrace facing the snowfilled garden. It was an amazing view!

Room Tip: Definitely get a Room with your own private onsen.

i was excited to come here to eat hida beef and have a private rotenburo in our room. i was expecting the property to be charming but it's actually kind of a standard updated ryokan. service was very good however. there is a bus that picks up at the JR station which is convenient. all we really did was walk around takayama's traditional streets, visit a morning market and did the shorter hike on the east part of the hills. if i knew beforehand, i would probably have skipped an overnight in takayama. the ryokan is 4 floors and meals are taken in private tatami rooms in a common dining area. the public bath has both indoor and outdoor baths. there is a ramen shop that is only open for 90min at night. it would have been fun to try if we weren't fed so much at dinner. there is a night lounge with live music. the room itself is fine, neither luxurious nor bare bones. i thought our private rotenburo would be on a quaint stone patio but it was just on a balcony which i think would usually be a sitting area in a regular room. food was good overall and hida beef was served on a hot stone. from hida cows comes hida milk, which was very creamy like hokkaido milk. the guest services directory includes waitress service ("companion" in jpns). i'm curious how often that is requested, but even funnier that it's actually listed.
