We have just stayed three nights at Hakuun Ryokan. Found the owners to be friendly and helpful. The breakfast menu was varied automatically each day and on day three we were surprised with a western breakfast. We were the only ones in the dining room on that day with the western breakfast and we could hear comments from other diners wondering how come we had western style and they were getting Japanese. Whilst we had no desire for western brekkie, we were impressed with the fact that the effort was made in the kitchen to create a whole different type of meal to all the other diners. All the food served each day was fresh and delicious and there were two lovely older japanese women who attended to everyones needs effortlessly.
The room was a traditional japanese room with tatami matting on the floors and futons layed out in the evening for sleeping. Set high on a hill, there are views for all and we also made use of the private onsen which was fun and very affordable at 1000 yen for an hour. The ryokan is slightly on the tired side with a little wear and tear showing, but still clean and ok. One staff member had quite good english having worked in Cairns, Australia for nine months. A shuttle is run by the ryokan to the train station twice a day, otherwise an easy twenty minute walk. The rest of the town is close by, about 5-15 mins walk. All in all. a quite reasonable and enjoyable stay. We would be happy enough to stay there again. ( The true test. )
