My husband and i went to Takayama in March 2012, and we stayed at this Country Hotel Takayama. It's fine as a budget hotel. It's very conveniently located across from the bus station. The room was clean but nothing fancy.

We found that hotel rates in Takayama were on average alot higher than other towns we visited. Country Hotel is no exception and we felt it was expensive for what it offered. The hotel is located directly across Takayama train and bus station which makes it ultra convenient to get in and around the town. However although the hotel was clean and service was ok, it really did not leave much of an impression on us.

The twin room we were given was very very small even for Japanese standard. Although the carpet looked a bit tired, the room was very clean. There was no room to open our weekend luggage, nor tables to place our belongs (most stuff ended up on the floor) and we basically had to climb over the luggage to open the door. The bed was very very firm.

There is a small ensuite bathroom, fridge, kettle and LCD TV with local channels and free internet via Lan cable. There are computers in the lobby (located on the 2nd floor) with free internet.

Check in time is at 3:00 PM and checkout time is 10 AM which makes it a bit awkward, so we ended up checking out at breakfast time. The hotel was very accommodating when we requested to leave our luggage behind.

There is a convenient store directly underneath the hotel. It is about a 7-10 minute walk to the Takayama highstreet, restaurants and the tourist sites.

For a short stay (1-2 nights) I think it is an "ok" option if you just need a place to sleep, but certainly not a suitable option if you plan to stay longer.

An average hotel with very small rooms. Rooms look old albeit clean. Location is good as it is just across the Takayama station and walking distance to most tourist attractions. Family Mart is downstairs.
Hotel will suffice is you are planning to catch a few zzzs after a whole day out sight seeing and if you only care about location.

I was travelling with a friend and chose this place amongst other similar competitors because of its laundromat (washer and dryer) - often an important feature during a visit to japan when you don't have time to wait for things to dry! The room itself was tiny - but that in itself is a japan experience, as long as you're not anxious to open your luggage a lot. it's the common tiny pre-fab bathroom, a TV and LAN modem mounted on the shelf (bring your own network cable). i could have done without the odour of cigarette smoke, however. not unusual to japan, but others have separate non-smoking rooms so you don't have the smell of past occupants. The staff were polite and nice, like in many parts of japan. There are two free internet terminals in the lobby and a host of tourist brochures. The true standout, however, is the location.

It's a very business oriented hotel - several work crews were put up by their company when we were there - so as long as you understand that, it's an ideal spot for an overnight stay given it's across the road from the station.

It's about 10 minutes walk from Takayama's old town (it's main tourist attraction if you don't count the Hida village - which we skipped as we'd just been to Shirakawago).

Room tip: See if you can get a non-smoking room that you can check first.
