“Expensive, dirty, nice location, staff speaks bad english.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 21, 2012

For rooms starting at 8000 yen a night, you'd expect an International Hotel to have staff proficient in more then Japanese.
This old, tired hotel breathes bygone glory days. The airconditioning is dirty and doesn't work in some rooms.
The hotel rooms are not properly cleaned, witnessing the pubic and other hairs in the bath and toilet.

On reserving a room, which can be done in Japanese through their website or in other languages by e-mail, please note that they did not react to any of my e-mails.

The breakfast at 1100 yen is of rather bad quality, there is plenty of it, just poor quality. Like canned meatballs etc.

It being close to Sakae and the city centre is really convenient.
However, there are cheaper better alternatives.

Not reccomended.

The Kokusai hotel is right smack in the middle of Sakae, the shopping/entertainment district of Nagoya. It must have been a prestigious Hotel back in the distant past, but it got reduced to a budget hotel because none of the interior had ever been upgraded (except for the toilet -- washlets have been bolted on at some point in time, I would guess about a decade ago). The good news is that the owners seem to understand this fact, therefore the prices are quite reasonable.

Because the interior is kept very clean, age was not an issue for me, except for two things. I was there in the winter, and the temperature was impossible to control, so the room was either unbearably hot (windows closed) or quite cold (windows open). The other major inconvenience was the lack of power outlets, especially around the table where I tried to use my laptop. There were only two available outlets, one in the bathroom and one on the opposite wall of the room, so I ended up with my phone charging in the toilet and the laptop's power cord crossing the room at waist level.

The front desk was very well staffed with English speaking employees, so there was no waiting and no communication difficulties during check-in and check-out. The breakfast selection was limited and unchanging, but it tasted good, and the breakfast restaurant offered sufficient seating even at peak times.

In the basement of the hotel there is an outstanding restaurant offering a variety of Japanese specialties.

All in all the hotel offers a reasonable value for foreign tourists who want to stay in the downtown area. But those who speak a bit of Japanese and/or willing to travel a couple of subway stops can find much better deals in Nagoya.

Once the best in Nagoya. Never updated. It just lost the time-train.
On the other hand, you are honestly charged with low fees. That's why I consider it "average" and not "poor".
Beware: rooms are tiny, tiny; with bathrooms' sinks very low -not recommended for people above 6feet /180cm.
For Internet connection I got a jurassic-modem, host in a big black bag. And it didn't even work.
Clean, with good breakfast, anyway.
