“Art, yes. Museum, yes. Tokugawa, not so much”
Reviewed August 15, 2013

An interesting portrait of the time period. Cool swords, armor, and examples of calligraphy. Personally, I thought the old landscape photography was a little boring, but maybe different strokes for different folks.

“good but limited”
Reviewed August 14, 2013

As the name says, artifacts are related only to Tokugawa's period/family. Do not expect to find a large collection of artifacts covering a large period.

“Good for artefacts, nice Japan-style garden, but can bore some people”
Reviewed June 9, 2013

Personally, I thought the museum was great especially if you like looking at historical artefacts, swords, kimonos, and old stuff. There is a lot to look at. Also, the Japanese style garden right beside the museum is pretty nice too. There is even a restaurant where you can sit overlooking the view of the gardens. If you come during spring time, the walkway entering the museum also has sakura flowers for you to take a picture of.

There are some people though (for example, small kids, or people who don't like looking at this historical stuff) who might find this a bit boring... they may not appreciate the artefacts or even the garden. Maybe this is because the architecture and the gardens are not the "blow you away" or "hold your breath" type. It's a museum, and a garden... so that's what you should expect as well.

The reason I am saying this because there are some museums and gardens that are really a must see, for any trip to a country. I think if you had limited time, you can give this a miss. But as a previous poster mentioned... if you really want to go see a Japanese-themed musuem, then this is good for that person.

Hope this helps.

“Ok if you're desperate to see what the Tokugawas owned but small selection.”
Reviewed November 22, 2012

A little of everything - swords, lacquer boxes, kimonos. Not as impressive as the ones I've seen in Kanazawa and Kyoto. A bit overrated, I think. Also a pain to wait for the Meguru Bus (one per hour). It cost me 2000 yen to take a cab from the museum to Nagoya station!
