“if these people know how it works?”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 17, 2010

This question - if these people know how it all works - always stayed in mind when we were at this hostel.

swimming pool was empty, in room there were NO shelves, no pegs, no clothes hangers - all our belongings laid on the beds and on the floor. The sewer system did not work properly. The staff tried to help us, but never was in a hurry. the price was less than in other places, but I do not think it is really worth paying it.

the beach is near, just cross the road (public beach), there is no night life at all and you should drive to aqaba if you want some entertainment

We stayed for 4 nights at Darna with our two boys (age 10 and 15) in December 2009. We think the location of the hotel is very good if You are interested in snorkling. We hired a guy from the hotel to show us the best places. Equipment for snorkling available for hire at the hotel.

The beach is clean and situated in the center of the best snorkling spots. On the beach there is a small shop with coffee, drinks and snacks. Otherwise there is nothing around except for 3 similar hotels (for example Moon beduin village). A taxi to the center of Aqaba is 5 JD. We did not have dinner at the hotel (just a few did).

The rooms where simple but OK for the price. Breakfast OK. Minimal cleaning of the rooms during the stay. Free internet and friendly staff. We had a room with a view over the sea (sunset!). Maintainences of the hotel was sparse. Overall we recommend the hotel BUT Darna lacks the final touch and extras to be the perfect stay.

We had booked two nights here but only actually slept here for 1 night. This wasn't anything to do with the hotel, just that we had organised a trip into Wadi Rum and stayed overnight there for the second night. We had room 4, twin room. Nice bright, clean room with a great shower room. Very modern fittings, even though the loo seat was on a slope! The hot water water for each room is provided by a hot water heater in each room which needs to be turned on for a while (2 hours ish) before you get any hot water. There was AC in the room but it was December so we didn't need it but would imaging that it would be essential in the summer. We didn't use the pool but it looked clean and new. There were hanging basket chairs set out around the pool area arranged so as to enjoy the sunset. As the previous reviewer mentioned, the pool area at night did appear to be where the hotel owners and their family/friends gathered to watch the TV and yes it was on quite loud. The restaurant didn't appear to be serving dinner so we went into Aqaba to eat. Would recommend you have a car. We did keep the room for the second night as it was somewhere to leave our luggage overnight and it was great to come back from Wadi Rum in the early morning and have a hot shower. We did borrow snorkel equipment but we only had it for about an hour and we weren't charged for it.

We stayed in the Darna Hotel for 3 nights having just spent 3 weeks volunteering in Wadi Rum's heat and beauty. The lovely pool and, just across the road, sea with coral just 40 metres from the beach justified the price. The owner was a blunt man who was very rude to a girl we were travelling with, but his son, who runs the place most of the time, is fabulous, helped us with anything we needed and apologised for his father. The rest of the staff were always friendly and helpful.

Our double room with ensuite shower was very clean and comfortable and the bathroom was nice too. The air con was very much appreciated. The hotel had a restaurant with nice food for average prices. Free wifi was advertised but we couldn't get this to work; however they let us use the hotel's PC which had a fast connection.

The trip to town is a small hassle, you have to either hitch or wait for/order a taxi; it is best to ask the owners how much you should be paying for the taxi to ensure you are not ripped off.

The snorkelling is great and a day's use of snorkel, mask and fins was 5JD per person from the hostel. Just 10 minutes walk north along the beach led to a sunken tanker (deliberately sunk for diving purposes by the current King when he was the Crown Prince) which makes brilliant snorkelling or diving.

We liked the atmosphere, amenities and service here but the price may be too expensive for some backpackers.

The Darna Village Hotel is relatively new and, although not in central Aqaba, is in the perfect location for snorkelling in the Red Sea. Snorkel and fin hire is reasonably priced and the best sites are literally right across the road. The room was spacious, cool and a small luxury as we were on a tight budget. The staff, jncluding some volunteers, are courteous and helpful although the owner is a little strongly opinionated for some! The buffet breakfast is generous but otherwise the food wasn't memorable. Free internet but we weren't able to connect to the promised wireless. Lovely cool swimming pool, too.

This was a great discovery after the disappointment of the neighboring "hotel". This is a no-frills place with an amazing staff (especially Elizabeth). The rooms are plain and simple but good enough for an extremely pleasant stay and at an excellent value for money. The area is south of Aqaba proper (about 15 minutes from downtown in a taxi), quite close to the Saudi Arabian border, this makes for a very calm and peaceful place with a great view of the sea, just across the road. The place is fairly new and there may be a few glitches here or there, but nothing serious. The dishes they serve in their restaurant are great, it is worth waiting those few extra minutes for them, breakfast is included and they serve it until late in the morning.
This is a place for relaxing, do some scuba diving, have a good time at the pool and enjoying marvelous sunsets looking into the Egyptian and Israeli coasts.
Even though a more thorough touristic development is planned for the future in the area, I'm sure this place will keep its independent spirt, a classic in every sense for travelers looking forward to stay away from the high-rate, prepackaged guided-tour nuisances of Jordan.
