“Disappointing”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 12, 2013

We spent a week at the Kempinski, had great expectations that were not met, by far .. Unfortunately.. The room was OK, clean and neat but too sterile. It had the feeling of a business hotel - huge vacant spaces without flowers or pictures on the walls - it felt a bit deserted..

The food was OK enough - nice breakfast, but in a five star hotel you should not have to fight away the crows from your breakfast table - one of them landed in my breakfast spreading food all over the place!!!!
The food at the beach was nothing out of the ordinary and expensive (the same prices as in Norway) and extremely bad service, slow and without enthusiasm.
The seafood restaurant however was very good, pricy that as well, but it could be justified by the ambience and the very nice staff there.
The staff were mostly nice and helpful - especially the Phillipinos!!

Housekeeping and turnover did a great job - had to ask the front desk for turnover though...

We had a relaxing vacation at the Kempinski, but have no plans returning there....

Room Tip: All the rooms have a seaview which is very good!

As usual my comments in list form and pretty straight forward:

Sleeping:
- Nice rooms, great views, very modern (almost contemporary).
- Housekeeping and the evening turnover service do a great job. Plenty of pillows from soft to hard.
- Large flatscreen to the wall where you can also check your bills.
- Minibar included. Daily filling of the coffee- and tea corner.

Swimming:
- Pool staff keeps a keen eye on what is happening. There are not so much pool beds but the beach with extra places is only a mere 10 meters away. Might proof to be a problem during high season though...
- Beware for the Jordaniën weekends! On Thursday and Friday hordes of Jordaniën and Emirates tourists swarm down on the hotel and flood the pools. I've got no problems with the so called "bourkini's" but when some go into the pool with regular clothing I tend to get nervous. At the least this is not hygienic! Also a huge increase in the number of children those two days resulting in a lot of noise and other misfortune like eating, puking (and more) in the pools. Again the pool staff does a great job in cleaning, keeping the childrean out of the adult pools and yakuzi, warning them off when necessary, etc...
- Cocktails are ok. Try the lemon-mint alcohol free. It's really refreshing. Always order in due time. Expect to wait about 15 minutes for your cocktail to arrive!
- There is ALWAYS noise at the swimming pools. Jet ski's keep goïng up and down just in front of the hotel and make an annoying noise the whole day long! Big fun if you are driving one but hell if you try to relax...

Food:
- Good honnest food. Discovered some interesting new things.
- During the Jordaniën weekend an increase in Arabian food and a slight decrease in European food. Guess this in normal when suddenly 70 percent of the guests are Arabian. As I said earlier... interesting food...
- Sometimes extra's can be enjoyed when paying a little extra above the half board price. Near the beach we enjoyed a BBQ, Steack frenzy and show coocking for an extra 5 JOD per person. In generall it was ok but the show coocking had too much shortcommings to be fully appreciated (ran out of certain dishes, some cold stuff,...). They work hard to improve though and appreciate your negative feedback.
- Some small shortcommings like missing pepper and salt shakers which we had to get from other tables, plastic glasses for wine (sometimes) but the meals were ok in general.
- Wine and champaign were a bit to warm when served. Cooling can be better.
- The Ice cream seemed melted and frozen again, and melted, and frozen again, and....

Billing:
For me personnaly billing was the biggest problem. When you have an extra like for example the BBQ for dinner, you first have to sign the check for the complete amount. The day before you leave the reception deducts the price of the half board which you already paid earlier when you booked. This system is really not transparant at all. I requested the half board to be deducted on a daily basis and hoped to follow this up on the flat screen in the room. This seemed to be nearly impossible since on the screen the total amount is divided into food, drinks, taxes, tips and service charges and this on different screens. It took me several walks to the lobby to ask for clarification which is something you don't want to do when you're on holliday!

Excursions:
- If you go to Petra be ready to walk for over 5 hours in a burning sun. Good if you like sun. If you don't then rent some means of transportation (mule, donkey, horse, carriage) but then you pay extra of course. It's big bussiness!

Ok. These were in a nut shell some remarks from a difficult customer. And now for the conclusion:

People are friendly, in general the service was ok, the food was good, the pools and yakuzi were nice, rooms are comfortable. Would I come back here? Yeah I think I would. As long as the price stays right I will. I gave this hotel the quotation "very good" so....

Room Tip: If you ask for a room that ends with number 33 (e.g. nr 433) you are on the end of the corridor with...

We encountered extremely poor service, waiting for wine, water, menus. Then when the food arrived, finally it was warm, rather than hot. The staff were slow, spoke little English and were unenthusiastic. Our room felt like a cage with thick shutters outside a very small balcony. There was no help for my husband to try floating in the sea and all in all it was a horrible experience.
As there was no wi fi in the room, inexcusable for a 5 star hotel, everyone was on their computers / iPads / iPhones in the breakfast area.

The hotel is quite new and perfectly located on the gulf of Aqaba with private beach and nice swimming pool (and more is being built). Modern interior design. The room (I was upgraded to a juniors suit sea-view) was very spacious and with a huge bathroom and a separate sitting room. The king-size bed was just great. Breakfast is very various and offers all the best Jordaina choices and a vast selection of international food. The quality of the ingredients is just superb. The reception is perfect, a good blend of Austrian efficiency, Jordanian warmth and a touch of Asian flare (many Asian girls in the hotel staff).
WiFi is complimentary, but available only in the ground floor and the beach/pool area. In the rooms you can connect to Internet just by cable. This is annoying when you travel just with tablets/smartphones.

Room Tip: sea-view is better

I tried three hotels in aqaba before I came to kimpinski which was the best of all , very very beautiful hotel in every thing , pools , beach , spa , breakfast and the rooms which a story by itself all the rooms are full see view , you have you from balcony you view in bed room and unexpectedly from the bath and while are relaxing in the
bathtub , I should till you that the policy of this hotel is to be generous with guest , and to service you before you ask , I will diffidently take kimpinski when ever I will visit Aqaba , last thing there price higher than other hotels but 100% worth it

Room Tip: high floor room for better view

We spent 1 night in the Kempinski hotel, which really deserve its 5 stars and reputation. The staff is really careful from your arrival until your departure and do their best to make you feel at ease. The great you with a typical Jordanian lemon & mint juice. Then a member of the staff brings you to your room and makes sure you have everything at your disposal. The room we had was huge and modern. The King size bed is just amazing, as the bathroom which provides bath and nice shower. The private terrace is the perfect place to look at the sunset or also just contemplate the swimming pools and the beach. The breakfast is really good and we appreciated to have it on the common terrace with view on the swimming pools.
One disappointment : to have stayed there 1 night only ! Kempinski hotel is definitely the perfect 5 stars hotel

Yet another excellent Kempinski hotel in Jordan (we stayed in 3 Kempinski properties in Jordan) on par with the one at the Dead Sea. The rooms were reasonably large although with a nice balcony. Service was pretty good.

Do NOT miss the sunsets from the floating platform (or from the beach if you must) ... spend at least 30 minutes to an hour just watching the sky change colours - absolutely stunning.

The Fish-In restaurant (in the hotel) is also highly recommended - great food and great service. We stumbled on this by accident - we were about to walk to the town for dinner and had checked the web for recommendations. A number of restaurants came up and we were about to head to these (including the Fish-In) and we asked the concierge for directions ; much to our surprise, they told us that the Fish-In was in the hotel !
