We stayed 3 nights in this beautiful secluded setting overlooking the river and being woken up to the sound of Hippos roaring, and watching giant crocodiles wallowing, in the morning. The newly refurbished lodges were superb and what one should expect for the cost. The staff were attentive and unobtrusive. Game drives were conducted by Thomas who is very experienced and a fountain of knowledge. Gonarezhou National Park is a wild place and very different for instance to Hwange, it is much more exciting as one never knows what may be 'around the corner'. The four of us thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and will return. It would be interesting to see the difference one the rains have come. It is particuarly encouraging that this lodge takes and active role in the community, and this should be the way forward for tourism in this kind of area.

Room Tip: We had rooms 1 and 2 which have fine views over the river. You should ask for one which has that vie...

We stayed in Chilo lodge for a magical 3 nights. The lodges themselves are perfectly situated on cliff tops overlooking the Save river and Gonarezhou national park. Each lodge feels nice and private, whilst the communal area is warm and welcoming. The photographs do not lie! This is an exquisite and luxurious place to stay. The attention to detail is fabulous- from the internal decor, to the beautifully presented food. We enjoyed 5 fantastic trips into the national park with Thomas, the lodge's very experienced guide. I doubt there are many places left on this planet where you can still experience life as wild and as bountiful as here. We did not see another vehicle inside the park! This is the sort of place you will smile about having visited in many many years to come.

This lodge recently re-opened. Our family stayed there for three nights in the beginning of August so we must have been one of their first clients. The lodge is situated close to the Gonarezhou National Park’s gate and far away from the main road or on a very quiet location. The main lodge was still under construction but we stayed in self catering rooms that are more affordable. We absolutely loved the rooms that are comfortable and beautifully decorated and with a veranda overlooking the river. We booked dinner in advance and prepared our own breakfast and lunch. Dinner was served at one long table in what must have been a former tea house or bar, together with John and other visitors. The food was simple but tasty and we enjoyed the company. Chilo Lodge organized a day trip to Chilojo Cliffs in the Park with their ranger Thomas. We only come across one party of two cars on that day. The animals are wild (compared to Kruger Park) and the scenery is beautiful. On our way back to Mozambique, we wanted to drive through Gonarezhou National Park into Kruger park via the Pafuri Gate but decided against this route because we felt that we were not adequately equipped.
We loved: the location, the rooms, the park, the very friendly staff. At the time of our visit, the lodge was still in the process of getting organised: the first night we stayed in the family lodge that stills needs renovation; no proper kitchen was yet available to prepare our food but food could be given to the very helpful staff to prepare it; bring your own drinks; bring a good torch for when electricity fails. To reach the Lodge by car, you should be aware that the last 43 km is a dirt road with, at the time of our visit, some bad patches.
Overall, we found straying at Chilo Lodge was an experience and we definitely will want to return!
