Chanters Lodge
Ranked #5 of 37 Livingstone B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence

“Chanters” is owned and operated by Richard Chanter. It is clean, affordable motel style accommodation. Being a smaller establishment the service is more personal and caring than you might find elsewhere. It is also a boon to have so much local knowledge available to you either via Richard or his staff. I find this most reassuring when traveling.
Apart from Bed and Breakfast, Chanters’ provides very reasonably priced meals and the refreshing ale.
You can choose to go into town for your meals but I found it most convenient to eat at the Lodge either in the dining room or out on the veranda. I could not fault the service or quality of the meals the kitchen staff prepared.
Richard and his staff are an efficient and courteous team who are only too willing to assist you in arranging your day’s activities whilst visiting Livingston.
Whether your tastes are for a sunset cruise on the Zambezi aboard the Lady Livingston, a visit to Victoria Falls, a few hours on a horseback safari, a walk with baby lions or just sitting around the pool with some nibbles and a good book, Chanters is the place to come home to and relax after experiencing all that Livingston has to offer.
Richard provides complementary Airport transfer and a big plus for today’s traveller is free Wi Fi.

I stayed at Chanters Lodge for 2 weeks at the beginning of March 2012.

I was met by Richard and Anastasia at the airport, which was very much welcomed after a 3.5 hour delay.

My room was basic but functional - I cannot comment on the other rooms, I had one that Richard gave me at a special rate for long term stay, and I know this is the one that has not yet been renovated. All other guests I spoke to though were very happy with their accommodation.

Richard and the staff were all so friendly and helpful, they helped me to book taxi's, trips, etc. Nothing was too much trouble.

Chanters Lodge is pleasant, the food is fantastic and the pool is refreshing.

Overall I would definitely recommend this to fellow travellers. It's a little out of the way, but it's quiet location and friendly staff made it a fabulous place to be.

Thanks for taking the time to review our operation and we were happy you enjoyed your long stay. We do not consider ourselves to be 'a little out of the way' being just 10 minutes walk from the city centre, but we value your opinion!

My colleagues and I have stayed at Chanters Lodge two years in a row, in February. After our first stay there was no doubt where we'd stay when we came back! Friendly staff, impeccably clean rooms, good food and a relaxed athmosphere combined to make us feel very much at home even though we live at the opposite end of the globe ourselves. The garden is a lovely oasis, and the neighbourhood is nice and quiet (except for amazing thunderstorms during the rainy season). All our booking needs, from taxis to the mall to Chobe safari were taken care of by Anastasia, and Richard Chanter kindly took us to and from the airport. We will be back!

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the garden.

You can spend a fortune and stay at one of the posh resort type hotels on the banks of the Zambesi, or you can really experience what it's like to live in Livingstone. Not only is Richard Chanter hospitable, but he also meets and greets you at the airport, and takes you back to catch your flight.

I had some time to spare and decided to go to Chobe ( last minute) for a day trip. At first the tour operator refused as he indicated a min. of two persons were required for the booking. Well Richard took the bull by the horns, and low and behold, I was picked up at 7:00 taken to Kazangula by taxi and I was solo.

The hotel compound is an oasis compared to Livingstone and I had a great time lounging by the pool enjoying a Mosi in the evening after a hot day touring. The restaurant has a wide range of traditional and western food and can be enjoyed from the patio overlooking the courtyard and the food is inexpensive. The accommodation is not luxurious by any standards, but then you have to consider what you are paying for and this is good value.

His staff are delightful and attentive and the place is very clean.

If you are not looking for decadence of the Royal Zambesi and wan't to try the real Africa - stay here. You can't go wrong.

Room Tip: Request a courtyard room

Thanks for your review and we were pleased you found the lodge to be good value for money. We do not pretend to offer 'luxury'. You recommend 'courtyard rooms' these are described as 'poolside rooms' on our website - just a point of clarification.

I know this is not a review!!

Just wanna check whether the Richard Chanter who runs Chanters Lodge is the same Richard Chanter who was General Manager of the Ridgeway Hotel on Church Street in Lusaka during the 1990's??

Well, if you are the same guy, would be nice to touch base with you again and re live the days we enjoyed at the Ridgeway Hotel.

Cheers and good luck

Thank you so much for making our stay perfect!
We arrived at the airport and although our flight was late
we were met by the kindest man, the owner of Chanter lodge.
He was super friendly, and on the way to his place asked us
about our plans. We arrived in the afternoon and he suggested
a sunset cruise on the river. He was able to book it for us, and it
was one of the highlights of our trip! The room we stayed in was
clean and comfortable. It was quiet, and had tea and a small fridge.
We also had mosquito nets, and a television. It was a home away from home!

The breakfast was perfect, and wonderful. People drank coffee and tea by the small pool, and others surfed the internet. It was like a fortress in africa!

We finally had to leave and he took us to the airport, and we felt like he was a diamond. He made our trip so wonderful, and it was a true diamond in Africa!

Room Tip: Take the sunset tour on the river!

A group of 6 of us stayed here after a 2 week walking safari in S. Luangwa, When we first arrived we were taken slightly by surprise as usually 5/5 rated lodgings in tripadvisor look a bit different than Chanters Lodge. However, we soon realized why this place is rated so high.

To start, the rooms are clean and comfortable. The lodge itself is conveniently located close to town. The location is in one of Livingtone's side streets, close to a handcrafts market and about a 10-15 minute drive to the falls. You might need a taxi to get back to the hotel if you are in town past dark as a safety precaution.

Next the food. It was delicious. You have to try the Bream, it is absolutely the best fish I've had in my life, and I've had plenty.

Service. The staff were friendly and responsive. Chanter is a great guy, he drove us himself to the airport. He is a great character. My brother in law is a jazz/blues musician and Chanter is apparently a DJ for a local radio on his own free time. So we were delighted to a great conversation about all kinds of music on our way to the airport.

All in all, don't expect luxury, don't expect fanciness, but expect a safe, warm, clean, authentic and friendly place to stay and enjoy one of the most wonderful places on earth.
