Sanctuary Sussi & Chuma
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 6, 2014

My wife and I stayed at Sussi & Chuma for 4 nights, which is slightly longer than most visitors, but it was our only destination on this trip, so wanted to make the most of it. And it was a good decision. There is so much to do and experience in the area that a shorter stay would have been unfulfilling.

Firstly, the location is perfect. Closer to the falls there is a lot of traffic on the water and a helicopter flying by every 15min. Sussi is just far enough upstream to escape all of that noise and busy-ness, yet close enough to be able to take advantage of everything Vic Falls has to offer.

And Sussi's size makes it a very personal and exclusive experience. The service is highly individualized and the staff warm-hearted and sincere. We felt that we were being singled out for special treatment, but I am sure those are just the high standards Sanctuary set for themselves. Each party is assigned a guide at the start of ones stay and he is responsible for taking care of all ones needs. Our guide, David Junior, was very knowledgeable and a skilled boatman and driver. I am sure all the other guides are equally good, but Junior was exceptional and contributed greatly to this being such a legendary trip for us. The cherry on top was when he took us for a surprise private picnic lunch on one of the many islands dotting the Zambezi.

The other aspect of the location is that it is right on the Zambezi. That river is magical and we could stare at its many hues all day long. Elephants, hippos, crocodiles, buffalo and abundant birdlife is par for the course and our guide took us out for morning cruises, sunset cruises, fishing or whatever cruise we felt like. It really is a completely different experience than going on a commercial boat excursion with one of the many operators out of Vic Falls.

Other amenities: the rim-flow swimming pool where one can spend endless hours sipping G&T's while staring over the mighty river. The lounge area is elevated for more spectacular views across the Zambezi and then there is a deck at water-level for fireside sundowners that are priceless. The spa is also similarly special and the masseuse, Malala, is very friendly and skilled.

Whilst Sanctuary is not one of the cheapest resort groups you will come across, the nice thing is that almost everything is included in the rates. One can eat and drink as much as you like and unlimited boat trips and game drives are at ones disposal, all inclusive (spa treatments are optional extras).

And then there is the breath-taking Victoria Falls! We have been to the falls before, but it is awe inspiring every time. It is one of the truly unique natural wonders on Earth. We did the breakfast on Livingstone Island in addition to swimming in one of the rock pools right at the edge of the falls. It is an adrenaline rush second to none! We can really recommend it and echo David Livingstone's famous words: "Scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angles in their flight."

Great property - luxury treehouse accommodations overlooking the Zambezi River. Velvet monkeys everywhere. Convenient location to visit Victoria Falls. Opportunities to ride elephants and walk with lions, which was the highlight of our trip. Luckson was our go-to guy. Whatever we needed, he got it done. Great massage.

We had an amazing 2 night stay at Sanctuary Sussi and Chuma. The staff were great, Chris our guide was very knowledgable and everyone looked after us like VIPs. Waking up to sunrises on the Zambesi, the views, the activities, the friendly and helpful service are definitely a must. I would definitely recommend a visit.

We began 9 days of safari here and loved every minute. We were greeted at the airport by our guide, Boswell, who took excellent care of us for our two night stay. (We loved him!) We are so happy we chose this small lodge. The setting is right on the banks of the Zambezi River, the accommodations are wonderful, and we felt like we were cared for on every level. The staff is excellent and the service was exceptional. Although we arrived at 2 PM they immediately served us lunch--the first of many excellent meals. They adjusted the time of our meals and game drives to fit our schedule, helped us plan optional outings and were flexible when we spontaneously added to it, and the cook made gluten-free food at every meal for one of our party. We could have stayed longer here as our time was full. On our only whole day we began with a river cruise, visited a lion reserve (fabulous--do it!), made the tour of the falls with our guide, took a 15 minute helicopter ride, had lunch on Livingstone island (amazing being on the edge of the Falls!!), had high tea at the Royal Livingstone hotel, and ended with the river cruise back at Sussi. The helicopter ride gave us incredible views and going to Livingstone Island where we we stood on the edge of the Falls was a real adrenaline adventure with dozens of photos to prove it! (Livingstone Island is a seasonal event so we were lucky to do it.) We loved the river cruises and seeing numerous hippos, crocodiles and birds. When we left Sussi for Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero in Botswana, Boswell drove us to the ferry and walked us through everything so it was completely easy. We were then greeted by our guide for Chobe Chilwero who drove us to that lodge. We loved Zambia and the people so much we would consider returning. Our take-aways--we loved Zambia, we loved Sussi and Chuma, we love Sanctuary Retreats and staying at their sister lodges as the level was consistently excellent and the transfers between lodges were smooth, easy and fun; and their are some amazing optional adventures here. Although I'd suggest letting the lodge know you are interested in some of the additional activities, I'd wait to arrive before doing final booking as the prices I was quoted in advance (from my travel agent) were much more expensive than at the lodge. Also the weather can impact events.

Room Tip: Loved the tree houses!

Sanctuary Sussi Choma Zambia
It was the best possible start to a 23 day long Southern African sojourn. The huts are on the banks of River Zambezi and you can sit out on the open air balcony and enjoy the wonderful views and maybe even catch some wildlife action as we did! The room offers every possible convenience and is beautifully appointed.
Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and helped us to make the most of our short stay. The food was very good and the service excellent --- ask for the last two rooms if you are looking for privacy and some private animal viewing (we were woken up by elephants below us before the actual wake-up call came in!) The highlight of our stay was the evening river cruise with a spectacular African setting sun. We were only able to do a short game drive but tracking the rhino on foot was one thing we regretted not being able to do.
One word of caution---if you are coming to see the Victoria Falls the time of year is very important as the Zambian side has dry season from July-Aug till January and the best views are from the Zimbabwean side. There are two ways around this hurdle---equip yourself with a visa and spend a couple of hours across the border, returning to your den by evening and/or tale the 15 minute scenic helicopter tour which operates from the Zambian side.(United Air Charters) As a matter of fact we would put this down on the ‘must do’ list.
All in all Sussi Chuma is an excellent destination and affords a memorable staying experience

Having been on a safari before, the location was a bit of a disappointment to me. I didn't realize the property was so close to a town - I was used to being way out in the bush, very remote in Kenya. That said, this was a great way to intro my mom to Africa. The camp and the staff are incredibly friendly, the thatched huts are lovely inside and the river safari's are a great compliment to the land viewing. A must here is seeing Vic Falls - do the full hike, wear the rain gear (even if it is hot, because you will be beyond drenched) and enjoy the beautiful of that tour! If you've been on safari before, would not recommend this on your tour except maybe as overnight for Falls and the river.
