“Great location, but expensive”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 24, 2009

The hotel and its sister, the Royal Livingstone, have the prime location next to the Falls. Zambezi sun is closer, but the Royal livingstone has the river terrace where you can sip your sundowners. However, you can use the facilities of both hotels.
The staff were friendly and the rooms and the pool fine, but the stay was spoilt a little by the extortionate prices of food and drink in the hotels- $39 for a buffet, and $4 for a local beer, $7 for a Pimms (plus tax plus service) We were also charged $10 for a taxi into town, but managed to get one back for $5 (without haggling).
The only reasonable option to eat without going into town is Squires- much cheaper than either hotel and very good.
The main benefit of staying in the hotel is its proximity to the Falls, and the fact that you can go in and out of the National Park without paying. The drawback is that you get ripped off on the food and drink- I would recommend eating and drinking elsewhere if possible!

The only reason to stay here is to be right next the Falls and it is worthwhile for one or two nights. The staff are great and the hotel is well run. However, the hotel attracts mostly elderly tourists, who want everything laid on for them. Don't stay here any longer if you are able bodied and independent.

The location was great, just a few minutes walk to the falls, its the biggest power shower you will ever experience.
The staff were very friendly but the bar and restaurant were totally over priced, 4.25 US dollars for a bottle of Castle lager. The cost was then elevated even further with a 10% service tip on the drink and then trying to charge again on the total price. Staff said it was because the drinks had to be imported, what a load of rubbish, found one bottle still had label, said it was brewed under licence in Zambia, however most labels removed!
We found a great place called Squires on site and the staff there could not do enough for you. Manager Ticky, food and drink superb and at a fraction of the price of the hotel restaurant. The Monkeys are also a real pain and will steal anything, even directly from your plate, they do get quite annoying.

We had read a few reviews on the Zambezi Sun Hotel and they were mixed, so we didn't really know what to expect (the photos on their official website don't look great either, so we were prepared for something a bit average). To our wonderful surprise, it was beautiful! The hotel's location is brilliant - literally 3 minutes walk to the Falls and because of the special arrangement with the hotel, you have unlimited free entry, whereas others not staying at the hotel have to pay park entry fees.

We had a standard room with twin beds - everything was spotless: we couldn't have asked for a more comfortable stay. The rooms are air conditioned and in the morning, we woke up to see zebra grazing just below our balcony around the pool. Breakfast is included with most packages and you won't be dissapointed - scrumptious. We wouldn't recommend the hotel restaurant for dinner though: they charge US$40 for a buffet dinner. Instead we went to Squires Restaurant (steak house) which is located on the hotel complex itself with a la carte meals for a fraction of the cost.

We couldn't get over how friendly and attentive the staff were - nothing is too much trouble. Definitely recommend Zambezi Sun Hotel. We had a look at the Royal Livingstone which is supposed to be more upmarket and definitely more expensive, but you have to drive to Falls and the hotel complex itself doesn't look nearly as nice. We were very happy with our choice.

Choosing where to stay to see Victoria Falls? This place will suit you just fine. The rooms are OK, nothing fancy but the ground are quite pretty (in line with 3 star expectations) with some Zebras and Monkey all over the place. We went to the Royal Livingston - its nicer for sure but not worth the extra money if you ask me.

Warning - the food is terrible and WAAAAY overpriced at their restaurant. Go into town and hit the market. Despite the terrible restaurant, I'd recommend staying here as a great value place that will serve as a perfectly fine place to sleep.

Stayed at the Zambezi Sun mainly for it's proximity to Victoria Falls. The location is amazing. You can literally walk to the falls within a few minutes. Our tour package included a guided trip through the falls so we met at the excursion desk and headed to the falls. The amount of monkeys walking around was incredible. They would run right up to you. Also, there were numerous zebras walking the grounds of the hotel.
While at the excursion desk we booked two other trips.....a zipline experience($35) over Victoria Falls Gorge and also a Lion Walk. The Lion Walk was not advertised at the hotel but I had read about it before travelling. For about $130 you are taken to a private reserve where they are re-introducing lion cubs into the wild. You get to join them on a walk through the reserve with the cubs. We petted the lions(20 month old brother and sister) and took tons of pictures. At the end, the game warden offered to take us into the cheetah reserve...for FREE. We were able to pet the cheetahs and get more photos. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life and the one thing everything asks about when I show them my travel videos. I highly recommend. Also, we were in Zambia when the Devil's Pool was in season. Rather than pay the high fee for a tour, we found a local guide for $45 who walked us across the rocks out to the Devil's Pool. Basically, it's a tidepool at the very edge of the waterfall and during certain times of the year you can swim in it and get right up to the edge of the falls. We got some amazing pictures while there. The Zambezi Sun is a great hotel and offers lots of options to see things.

The Zambezi Sun is an excellent hotel for a family visit to Zambia. We slept in quiet, ultra comfortable and spotless rooms, ate breakfast and dinner in the open air dining room, and spent lazy afternoons lounging by the pool.

Access to area attractions is easily made through the activities center, where we booked a voyage on the African Queen (A must do trip in itself). You can also arrange for horseback rides, elephant safaris, helicopter flights over the falls and many other adventures. There is also a beautiful nature trail on the grounds and believe me when I say beware of crocodiles. I thought one was a statue and ventured close enough to get the thrill of a lifetime!

One very useful feature of this hotel is the on site medical clinic. Our daughter became very sick from a bacterial infection. Within 20 minutes the nurse (who was as capable as any doctor!!) had my daughter smiling and well on the way to recovery.

But the most spectacular aspect of this hotel is you are only a few hundred meters from the Falls itself! That is worth the price of a room alone.

The food was excellent. You have access to several restaurants on the property and can also journey over to the Royal Livingstone. Prices are reasonable. They are a bit less than the prices in most US resorts. Compared to South Africa, however, they were high. But I imagine South Africa is the deal of a century right now!

The hotel staff was always polite, helpful and treated you like royalty. No complaints in any way.

You may also want to use Bushtracks Safaris as a guide to the area. These people are first class and go beyond the call. My son developed a bad case of the flu and the guide brought us to a pharmacy in Livingstone, dealt with the pharmacist and got him much needed medicine. Unbelievable if you ask me.

We will definitely revisit the Zambezi Sun someday, if only to see a monkey steal someone's breakfast again:)
