This is our second time staying at Bushbuck River House and we were just as pleased as the last time (see previous review for more). The lodge is great and Alan and Oriel are wonderful hosts. It just feels so comfortable and they are so welcoming - feels like being with friends but also very professional. This time we stayed here to rest up between our stays in South Luangwa in Zambia and bushcamps in Botswana. We also returned to Bushbuck for a couple of nights before starting our trek back home.

This review I'd really like to focus on the planning and arrangements that Alan made for us in Botswana. We knew we wanted to go to Botswana but were rather overwhelmed with all the bushcamp options and logistics. We emailed Alan with what we had in mind and he arranged it all - and it exceeded our expectations! He chose bushcamps that were perfect for us, set up all the transportation to and from and he gave us all the information we needed to prepare for and go on this part of our adventure. I highly recommend using his knowledge and expertise for safari planning and Bushbuck River House is the perfect place to use as 'home base'. They not only can make your arrangements but they will also do guided safaris and I've no doubt but what that would also be an excellent experience.

I also have no doubt but what we will again have Alan arrange safari for us and that we'll stay again at Bushbuck River House.

Just another note - If you use the TripAdvisor link to their website, you'll get all the lodge info and info about the day-trip things you can do. Email them to get for info about more 'distant' trips or excursions. They also operate as Nomad African Travel, but that internet search, unqualified, will turn up a number other operations so use this link: http://www.nomadafricantravel.co.uk/main.html

My adult children and I stayed at Bushbuck for five days in early June and had a wonderful time. Oriel set up a great itinerary for our stay and we had some once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Albert is a fantastic cook and could be a chef in any first-class restaurant in the world. Don't miss his chocolate mousse or carrot cake! The day trip to Chobe is also a definite must!

We stayed with Oriel and Alan at Bushbuck River House in March and had a terrific time. It is the perfect place: away from the hustle and bustle of 'town', while close to the river with any activities one is interested in fully arranged for you. With a welcome into their home, what we loved best was the complete lack of pretentiousness. This is where Oriel and Alan have settled their unique and host/safari-filled lives, and they gracefully invite guests to be a part of it. Each dinner in the boma invites the potential for interesting discussion in addition to reflection on the events of the day. Watch out for the croc - out of site and harm, but wonderfully intriguing!

Great spot, right on the Zambezi. Feels like home from home. Fabulous food, nice pool. A nice drive thru the national park from Livingstone, perfect if you want to be near but not in the town. Very welcoming and friendly hosts.

Lovely home with lovely host's. Ariel and Alan go out of their way to make you feel like you are right at home. The food is delicious, the room we had was nice in size but I agree the Mattress are old and worn and should be replaced. The place is some ways away from Livingstone so keep that in mind, Oriel will call you a cab anytime and or if Alan happens to go into town you can hitch a ride with him. A place a definitely would go back to, and yes be sure to visit the local Sinda Village it's a great tour and gives you an idea what life is like for others

Many thanks for finding time to review your stay at Bushbuck River House. Well we have just returned from Livingstone and have managed to find a lovely new mattress for the room you stayed in. We wished that we had known when you were here that the previous one was no longer so comfortable, as we might have been able to move you to a different room or replace it during your stay. I'm sure we will be spending a bit of time lying on the mattresses in the other rooms to check them out as well. I hope you might be able to stay again so that we can reach our 6 stars. Thanks for choosing to stay at Bushbuck, we appreciate your support.
Kind Regards,
Oriel

Let me say beforehand, I would give Bushbuck 6* if it where not for that old Mattress we slept on.
Oriel if you are reading this please order a new Mattress for that room underneath of you.
The place is gorgeous, the hosts are going out of there way to help you out in any way. The food is fantastic, Albert does a fine job and has been trained well. We spent 5 days here and had a lovely time, a place you can call home.

We spent four lovely nights at Bushbuck and as everyone has mentioned that has stayed there, the food was excellent, the hosts were knowledgeable and helpful and nothing was too much trouble.
Alan and Oriel are involved with local projects which I like and if we had had more time here, I'm sure that they would have been able to arrange for us to visit them.
The rooms were clean and comfortable (although the shower was typically African in its efficiency) and the staff were great. I would like to single Albert out for a special mention as his food was well presented and delicious and the variety that was offered was impressive. His introductions to his meals were given with pride and a beaming smile and made meal times something to look forward to.
The wildlife was not as abundant in May as it is when water is more scarce but we managed to see elephants chomping their way through the bush at the back of the main house and drinking from the lagoon there. We also saw a male bush buck, several African fish eagles and heard a pod of hippos somewhere in the mighty Zambezi that flows past the end of the garden.
We made a last minute decision to take a helicopter flight over the falls and Oriel arranged this for us with a wave of her magic wand (or was it a quick phone call?). She also arranged our other excursions, canoeing and a day trip into Chobe and presented us with one bill at the end of our stay. Nothing could have been easier for us as a guest and so I thank our hosts for their hospitality and thoroughly recomend bushbuck river house to anyone wanting to stay near to Victoria falls.
