“A Great Place to Stay in Livingstone”
Reviewed August 24, 2011

We stayed at Bushbuck for three nights prior to commencing a two week Botswana safari. The stay at Bushbuck turned out to be a highlight of the whole world trip that we were on: it is the location and hospitality that sets Bushbuck apart. Bushbuck is a traditional-style thatched farm house and we stayed in a room on the ground floor. The room was stylishly decorated with comfortable facilities and there is a relaxing living room to share with other guests. We especially enjoyed the location on the bank of the Zambezi and the freedom to roam the grounds exploring the plants and wildlife. There was plenty to explore with elephants and antelope crossing on the lawn and heaps of birds to practise your identification skills on. Alan and Oriel were the perfect hosts and immediately our family came to feel as though we were staying with friends rather than as part of a commercial arrangement. We can highly recommend the local village tour that can be arranged: completely non-touristy and very informative. While we did not do it, we can also see that the optional school visit would be a very rewarding experience. We believe that what Bushbuck does best is provide a peaceful, comfortable, friendly and relaxing place to slip into the sights and sounds of Africa while still being a convenient base to visit Livingstone and the Falls - highly reccomended!

Our team of 8 people stayed here for three nights after working at a school for orphans for two weeks, and it was just the rest and refreshment we needed! Oriel was fantastic, setting up all our activities via e-mail before we arrived, so we had nothing to worry about. The house feels like it is in the middle of nowhere, yet it is only 20 minutes drive to Livingstone and all of its tourist activities. It is a gorgeous, relaxing place to stay, and the setting is unbeatable, right on the banks of the Zambezi. I cannot say enough good things about it! Lots of wildlife abound, too - hippos, bushbucks, elephants, buffaloes, and too many birds to count.

Bushbuck River House / Liyoyelo Farm was a fantastic and unforgettable experience for my fiancée and I. Alan & Oriel were completely knowledgeable and extremely down to earth, great people. We felt so at home in their beatiful lodge with it's fantastic surroundings. Activities and bookings through the lodge were very easy and they saved us a lot of money as well! Would definately go back and try some tailor-made tours with them as well. NomadAfricanTravel.co.uk gives more info on the location and great tours you can do with as well! Can't recommend highly enough!

We liked Bushbuck River House so much that we just had to return! (Check out my first TripAdvisor review dated 17th December 2010)
And again we were not disappointed. The second visit was more relaxing and enjoyable and it really did feel like we had come “home” for a short visit. The clean and comfortable en-suite room was very welcoming. The tea and coffee making facilities in the room were put to good use, fresh milk is available from the kitchen fridge at all times.
As always the hospitality of Alan and Oriel was superb, the home cooked meals were just fantastic. It was so nice to chill out and relax in the garden reading a book, listening to the birds and letting the world pass by. In the evenings we enjoyed the evening meals whilst seated under the pool boma chatting with other guests. One word of advice though should you decide to stay here, please inform Alan and/or Oriel if you do not like certain food products as it would be a huge shame for them to prepare a wonderful meal that you would not enjoy.
We made a 2 day trip to Chobe NP in Botswana with Alan as our guide and this was a really enjoyable time, no problems at all and Alan was the perfect host and guide. If you visit Livingstone (10km away)when the water levels in the Zambezi River are high and Vic Falls is awash with torrents of water pouring over the edge of the falls then we’d recommend you make a trip to Livingstone Island (which can be arranged and booked by Alan / Oriel). If you have the courage then you too could stand close to the edge of the falls and watch the water race past you and over the edge. I did and I loved it!
We cannot recommend a stay at Bushbuck River House enough; it really does tick all our boxes. If you want to have some quiet time and relax for a few days or maybe book something from the wide range of activities that re offered then this is the place – it is probably one of Livingstone’s best kept secrets.

My grown up daughter and I spent 2 wonderful days at the Bushbuck River House and immensely enjoyed Oriel and Alan's superb hospitality and local knowledge. The house is set in beautiful location and the look-out over the river is a very peaceful place to sit and read...the rock pool is fabulous for a cooling dip too! Oriel's cooking is superb and the evening meals with our hosts in the outdoor dining room very congenial. They were most helpful in organising trips for us too. Nothing seemed too much trouble. Highlights were Victoria Falls (though I recommend a ziplock plastic bag for a camera - I ruined mine!) and an early morning Elephant Safari on the banks of the Zambezi, and for a sunset cruise on the river we much preferred the small and friendly craft than the big fancy booze cruise. You still get free drinks and canapes on a Zimbabwean Island but you get closer to the wildlife!

Great location on the banks of the Zambezi and the hippo did visit the garden while we were there. Alan and Oriel were very friendly and helpful with suggesting and arranging trips. We went to Vic Falls (one of my best trips ever), on a elephant safari, on the helicopter flight over the Falls and visited Livingstone. Oriel also took us to the local primary school which was a delight. Food was great - we ate outdoors each night- and the company excellent. We learned a lot about Africa from Alan, Oriel and the other guests. Good grounding for us before we went in to the bush in Botswana as Alan is a safari guide. Our room was lovely and came complete with mosquito nets. Pool was brilliant. And there was wildlife in the grounds of the house - but at a safe distance.

Spent 3 night break at Alan & Oriel's home. Very tranquil & allowed me to relax with a book and feet up. Added bonus was the visit of the herd of elephants. Hippo was a night visitor leaving clues of his/her visit every morning.

Just what I needed after city life in Johannesburg.

I'll be back.....
