Owner description: Devil's Pool is adjacent to the famous Livingstone Island situated on the edge of the Victoria Falls. Guests can choose to enjoy an exhilarating swim to the edge of the falls during their Livingstone Island visit. The Devil's Pool is usually open between mid-August and mid-January - depending on Zambezi water levels. Livingstone Island tours are accessible through Tongabezi Lodge.

My friend wanted to do this and after watching videos on youtube I had decided that I wasn't interested. It looked too frightening for a weak swimmer. Eventually I changed my mind and I'm glad I did because it wasn't challenging at all.

This tour is very well run and the guides ensure that you are safe at all times. You will want to wear water shoes for the swim / walk to the pool. It is over rough terrain and there were a few bumps and bruises but nothing serious. the swim portion is very short and the current in that area isn't very strong. There isn't any wildlife to worry about inthe water because they are all smart enough to stay away from the edge of the falls.

There is a guide with you at all times. Someone holds your feet when you hang over the falls so there is no fear at all. They take lots of pictures for you and are very friendly.

When it is over you get to enjoy a really great meal before the boat ride back to the hotel.

Took a couple of friends out here last year and absolutely loved it. The guides were amazing, helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. Can highly recommend this. Would recommend people taking really good shoes, like running shoes, keens or chaco sandals though. Flip flops won't cut it! Thanks for the wonderful afternoon tea as well.

I like to do some crazy things, and this was one of them. Now, this is not a year round event, so you have to plan your trip just right. The river is low, and not alot of water goes over the falls, and that is the perfect time to visit the Devil pool. Usually November through March. After that it is the rainy season, and the the pool with surrounding area is covered by rushing water. But you get the chance while in the pool to go to the edge of the falls and look over, while the centrifugal force of the water keeps you from going over, it is brilliant.

We were there when the river was low (November 201).. which is the only time you can go.
We booked the excursion through the Royal Livingston Resort. It was expensive but it also came with a wonderful lunch.
I cannot stress enough that you need to wear water shoes or sneakers. (gym shoes etc.). I was told that flip flops or sandals were fine.. and this isn't true. The rocks are very pointy, there isn't a path to wear you are getting in the water, you are walking over jagged rocks then sliding into the pool, then when you get out you need to climb back out.
Also be aware, if you have any open wounds I wouldn't suggest getting into the river.

If you're at the falls in the low water season it is possible to simply walk out to Livingstone Island and Devil's Pool from the National Park. Unfortunately we arrived a couple of weeks too late and the only out was via a boat trip departing from The Royal Livingstone hotel. http://www.tongabezi.com/livingstone_island.php

The only catch, the only options available is a $100 combination package including high tea and drinks. We eventually decided the trip would be worth it, even though we only were really interested in the dangling over the edge of the waterfall.

Lucky we chose to go, the devil's pool was absolutely amazing, a tiny bit scary, but the staff there were excellent and made sure everything was safe. The food and drinks were absolutely amazing, some of the best food I ate during my 3 months in africa.

Some additional info regarding times, wet and dry seasons vary each year, we apparently missed out on being able to walk across by 1 week and that was on the 28th December. Also, once the walking route does close, the Tongabezi trips become very very popular and tend to book out a few days in advance so book ahead to avoid disappointment. On further thing to note, apparently in the ultra high water season, even the Tongabezi boat trips close because there is just too much water to safely visit the devil's pool.

So to sum up, despite the high cost, if you can afford it I would definitely recommend the trip out with Tongabezi, even if it is low water season and possible to take a very cheap walk from the national park.
