Waterberry Zambezi Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed March 21, 2013

We stayed here for 2 nights. This small lodge is right on the edge of the River Zambezi and while you are eating your sumptuous breakfast you can watch and hear the hippos in the river. We were warmly greeted at the airport by staff from the lodge and given a guided tour en route as we travelled to Waterberry. This is a magical place. We had a great room right on the edge of a watering hole and watched the monkeys playing from our terrace. And the crocodiles! The rooms are spacious, comfortable with fans to keep you cool at night. Laundry was a complementary service. Meals were delicious and the staff were friendly and helpful. There are various optional tours and adventures ...we visited the Victoria Falls...awesome. Each morning and evening we went on a trip up the Zambezi with a very knowledgeable guide who explained in detail about the river and its wildlife...we saw crocs, hippos, monkeys a huge variety of amazing birdlife....then as the sun was going down we enjoyed drinks and snacks watching the sunset.

If you want to visit the Victoria Falls this really Is a fantastic place to stay. Although it is outside Livingstone which is about 30 mins away, it really is worth it to enjoy the Zambezi and its wildlife in such a magical setting.

Room Tip: All the rooms are great

Perhaps the title seems an overused phrase, but not in the case of Waterberry Lodge. From the moment we were picked up from Livingstone Airport by Christopher to leaving for Botswana after a 4 night stay, it was a wonderful experience. The setting on the banks of the Zambezi, the comfort, the service from all the staff and Kevin and Charmaine's attention to making our stay being memorable, surpassed all my expectations. There must be a temptation to not leave the Lodge as the grounds and the setting are wonderful but make the effort to fly over Victoria Falls, walk the down to the Boiling Pool, walk across the Zambezi bridge leading to Zimbabwe although resisting the temptation to try the bungee jump might be wise. Let Christopher take you to a local market; an amazing experience. Accept Charmaine's offer to arrange a walk to the nearby village that the Lodge supports as part of their community project. Accompanied by Webbie, a member of lodge staff, we walked the village met people who lived there and felt humbled and privilidged. Enjoy every sunset cruise you can; those sundowners are special!

We arrived at Waterberry after nine days safari in Botswana and were looking forward to some R&R. The Waterberry is a very welcoming place to get to after the journey by road from Kasane. Within an hour of arriving we were gently drifting along on the sunset cruise on the Zambezi, taking in the peace and quiet, watching birds and monkeys, sipping wine nibbling canapes and chatting to fellow guests and our guide. The guides are all very knowledgeable, particularly about birds, we also had an entertaining afternoon fishing on the river, but had no inclination to eat the tiger fish caught.
We wish we had stayed longer to enjoy the grounds, the pool and the various attractions. Our visit to the local villages and the pre-school was a real eye opener.
The trip to Livingstone island was great, see review.
The staff are all delightful, friendly and kind.

We hope to go back.

After spending a wonderful time in South Africa, waterberry was always going to have a tough time living up to our experiences there. The good news is it managed to. From the minute we were met at the airport until the time we were taken back there the waterberry excelled. The location was breathtaking on the banks of the Zambezi river. The enthusiasm and knowledge of the lovely friendly staff big webby, chippy webby, Chrispen, kandanga, Christopher all led by Kevin, charmaine and Catherine was exceptional. The sunrise and sunset cruises were wonderful and the truly inspiring visit to the tukongote community school supported by the lodge and the walk around the village should not be missed. The food at the lodge is gorgeous my favourite of all the African lodges I've been to. Simple but delicious. Our room was small but comfortable but beware there is no air con just a fan and you will need the insect repellent provided. We loved this place and hope to return again soon.

In all our years of travel this is only the second place we have returned to, and we weren't disappointed.
All the elements we experienced and enjoyed were still present, sunset boat trips, wonderful bird life, trip options and a relaxing environment all meant that the trip allowed us the time for a small amount of RnR after the busy time in the north of the country.
The 2 standout experiences here this time was the visit to the Tukongote community school where having pre-read the website were able to take some well appreciated school aids (the blow-up footballs and Globe being of particular interest) direct to the pupils and staff which, followed by a sobering walk around the village with an extremely well informed staff member (webster the chippy) really bought to life the extent and opportunity for the support waterberry are providing to the village.
The second was the bird walk around the estate made real by the enthusiasm and knowledge of Big Webby reinforcing the choice to return.
Combined with great food and helpful staff (from christopher providing Slingshot support at the falls from the baboons whilst we ate to kovics running the gauntlet of a slightly confused bat in the dining area) all making new memories and despite not being the only people in camp this time we still felt special at this wonderful lodge.

I will never forget our arrival at the Waterberry Lodge. When we got to the river view lodge right at the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe we were welcomed by the roaring sound of a lion. After a warm welcome by the staff we were brought to our own private guesthouse with separate bathroom. Everything was clean and well furnished. Although there is no air-conditioning we had a good night rest on the comfortable bed and a fan provided more than enough fresh air. Breakfast and dinners were all well balanced and tasty, also the local staff is doing their utmost to make your stay as nice as possible. Trips to the Vic Falls can all be booked directly from the lodge and prices are reasonable. Our stay at the lodge included a 2 hour sunset cruise on the upper Zambezi with a breathtaking sunset...

All in all a well maintained and clean lodge with lots of activities or just a few days of relaxation.

We drove from Namibia to Zambia in three weeks with a lot of camping in national parks, and ended our trip at Waterberry. The staff were very friendly, professional, knowledgeable, the chalet had a perfect view of the Zambezi river, the food was home made and delicious, the activities were very well coordinated. Gail from the riding stables is a warm, lovely woman and I would recommend the ride through the bush and along the Zambezi. It really was a wonderful end to our holiday. We felt taken care of, there was a family feel to the lodge, the views were excellent and the accommodation clean and the service was excellent. So, Kevin, Katherine, Chris, John, Kandanga and all those at Waterberry, thank you so much for a wonderful experience!! We loved it!! We would return one day to experience the wonderful Zambian hospitality again, happy new year!!

Love,

Hnin and Jan
