“Serenity on the River”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 24, 2012

We stayed here for one evening in late August before heading off to Botswana. The setting is beautiful and very peaceful. The rooms are comfortable, the lodge is perfectly decorated and the food was very good. We loved sitting on the patio overlooking the river for a late evening dinner and early morning breakfast with a superb buffet. A hightlight was our cruise on the Lady Livingstone. The service was great with plenty of drinks and snacks plus the ship was quite luxurious. Too bad we could not have stayed longer!

Room Tip: Ask for one overlooking the river and on the second floor.

We stayed here for two nights as part of a package tour with African Sky Safaris. While the rooms were beautiful, comfortable and clean, and the restaurant was good and not outrageously overpriced, there were a couple of things that just annoying enough to note.

We had prepaid the room and two excursions -- a trip to Victoria Falls, and a sunset river cruise. When checking in, we discovered that we needed to pay an "entrance fee" for the National Park in which the property sits. When going to the activities center (apparently subcontracted and not part of the hotel itself) we needed to pay an "entrance fee" for both of our excursions as well. We booked an additional activity -- a morning walk with the lions -- and paid there. I went directly from the activities office to the front desk and purchased a wi-fi voucher -- and the exchange rates between the two transactions differed by nearly 15% (with the excursion desk being higher).

None of this would prevent us from returning to the lodge, and (with the exception of the exchange rate difference) if the fee had been bundled into what we had prepaid, we would never have given it a second thought. It just made us feel like we were being taken advantage of a bit.

When we had an early-morning departure for the lion walk -- which meant we would have to leave before the restaurant opened for breakfast -- they put together an excellent take-away breakfast for us. It's a shame that there were issues with the charges, because it was otherwise a fantastic location, level of service, and accommodations.

The David Livingstone is not to be confused with a number of Hotels and Lodges branding the Livingstone name in some way. This Lodge is a little off the main road as it sits on the banks of the mighty Zambezi river. The Lodge was built about 5 years ago and has a very nice ambience.
The Chief was outstanding and other than the annoying marimba players during dinner who played 3 notes for an hour (a salt shaker to the head from the dinning balcony got that under control) It is a very good experience I would give it a high 4 star rating, they have a great spa on location. Staff very friendly and helpful. Rooms are nice and tastefully decorated in classic Safari style. value for money.... They have a really nice cruise Boat for viewing and dinning with advanced planning.

Room Tip: get one with a bed

We spent four wonderful nights in this well positioned, friendly, well catered hotel. The staff are very friendly, the views are outstanding, the rooms well appointed. Food is excellent and Chef Murray Winston makes sure all patrons are taken care off when there are special needs. The hotel has a separate company arranging tours and their service levels were excellent. Although the Royal Livingstone Hotel is very upmarket and well appointed, we felt staying at the David Livingstone Safari Lodge and Spa was the perfect choice. It is a very well balanced lodge. We will certainly be back and recommend it to all our friends.

Room Tip: If you can, go for suites ie number 222 or 231

This is without a doubt the best spot on the Zambezi River in Livingstone. The location is superb - you cannot see the Falls but the wonderful sunsets from the front deck more than compensate. The rooms are very comfortable with huge bed and crisp white sheets, including a wonderful Victorian bath to wallow in, and everything else one needs. Service and food were excellent. Altogether a great experience and I can highly recommend this to anyone looking for a very comfortable stay at the Falls.

This is a large hotel rather than a lodge, but it still feels very cosy and personal. The rooms were fantastic, with a large bath and shower. The bed was enormous and the room looked out over the Zambezi. It is very handy for visiting the falls, game park and boat trips on the river. The breakfasts were huge with a lot of choice, although the other meals were quite pricy. The bar was great with a fireplace for cool nights and the staff were very helpful. We had to leave our car in Zambia whilst we travelled to Zimbabwe and Botswana and this was not a problem. Zambian tourism is working very hard to keep tourists on the Zambian side of the falls. Well done. We were there to see the lunar rainbow and that was a fantastic experience.

Magnificent service, great food - in an absolutely perfect setting. Get away for a long weekend to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The sunset cruise is a must and a visit to Victoria Falls essential (obviously). Highly recommended!
