Romana Resort & Spa
Ranked #28 of 128 Hotels in Phan Thiet
Reviewed August 30, 2009

Booked this hotel for 10 days through the official site. At first there were some problems with the confirmation of the booking, I even had to phone the hotel office to get the confirmation, but the secretary spoke awful English, so I wasn't sure the hotel was even booked until we arrived there.

The hotel is located in the outskirts of Mui Ne - once we tried to go to Mui Ne on foot, it took about 1,5 hours. But the taxi is very cheap there, so the location was no problem at all.

Although we booked a standard room, we got a free upgrade to the Ocean Pool Villa (with a private pool) for the whole period of our stay. That was really a very pleasant surprise!

We liked: the territory - very clean, everything is blooming with flowers; the spa - prices are higher than in Mui Ne, but it was so good and relaxing; Thursday BBQ party - a fixed priced dinner (for about 30 USD per person) - free flow Australian wine, any kind of salads, starters, fresh fish and meat BBQ, cakes and fruit; the room - clean and cousy, the pool was cleaned every day, 100% silk bathrobes in the room.

Problems - the staff is friendly and willing to help, although only one girl spoke a sort of English; a lot of gekkos and bats (once a geсko got into the room at night), virtually no beach, a pretty expensive restaurant, old furniture in the rooms

I had a very bad experience at romana. I got married in vietnam last year and I went on honey moon for 2 nights there. On the 1st night, i went to swim during night in the swimming pool. When i went back to my room, there was 1,5 Million dong missing in my wife purse.

We told the management who said they will investigate and will offer us a voucher for 1 night another time.
Few days later when i contacted them to see if they found anything, they told me it was my mistake to not put the money in the locker and so there would be no voucher.

I dont care about the 1,5 million of dong - 60-70 euro but it's the way they treat the client. They told me something and dont keep their promise. I was really disapointed and I left the hotel after 1 night to go to another resort.

Very bad experience for me, especially on honey moon :-((

Stayed at Romana for 2 nights. Booked through direct email with sales office. Due to low season, they offered free upgrade from room to ocean view villa (with private pool) for 1 night. We paid the standard price for the villa for the 2nd night. Only a dozen of guest during our stay. Very quite and we enjoy the pool ourselve for most of the time. Staff are nice and friendly. The negatives are (1) a bit far from the centre Mui Ne, 10 minutes taxi to Sailing Club / 15 minutes to Sinh Cafe (VND80,000-100,000) , and (2) our room can't see the ocean (block by trees) although it's called Ocean view villa. Will come back next time.

We couldn't believe our luck when we arrived in this place ! Absolutely fab - the grounds and views are brilliant. It is a long way from anywhere decent but we didn't mind, perfect place for a sun holiday and some R & R.

We stayed in one of the hotel rooms also with sea view - rooms were very good standard.
Restaurant was lovely, wide variety of food ( western and asian) at normal prices ( not the cheapest )

We used the Oceanic Spa facility at the resort and it was just class - beauttiful setting - foot massage while having a cocktail looking out at the views and catching the sea breeze.

Overall, it's beatiful setting and good facilities - highly recommended, only buts are the staff have poor english - gets a bit annoying in the restaurant and the resort goes to sleep at 11 so not much night life.

The ocean villas with private pool and outside bathroom are lovely, as are the hotel grounds. Two big buts : there is no beach to speak of (sea swimming) is almost impossible and restaurant/bar prices are exorbitant - no doubt because you have to travel quite a distance to find alternatives! Next time I would opt for the lovely sandy beach of Mui Ne.

We stayed at the Romana for 4 nights just after Christmas. The resort is well maintained, and everything is extremely clean. We had a room in the main building which was a good size, with small balcony from which we could see the sea and the pool. It is an extremely quiet resort, but that can be a God send after the hustle of HCMC. We ate at the resort on 2 nights. On the first night we took advantage of the buffet bbq at the Laguna Bar, next to the pool. There was a good selection of food, for a reasonable price. Food was good, and we went up for seconds, thirds etc. On our last night, we ate in the Panorama Restaurant. We had lovely starters, but both of our main courses left a lot to be desired which was a bit disappointing. The breakfast was great, serving until 10am, and when we arrived about 9.15 each morning, they were still re-stocking any thing that ran out. We sometimes had lunch from the pool side bar which ranged from Pizza, to burgers to Vietnamese food.

The pools are lovely, providing excellent views over the beach. Even though the resort was full, it never felt crowded, and there was space by, and in, the pool. The beach is very rocky, not your typical tropical image, but if you're feeling adventurous you can go for a walk across the rocks and up the near by hills for a good view. We also took advantage of the tennis courts, which are free, but $10 for the balls.

The resort is not within walking distance of the bars and restaurants, but that really isn't a problem. Taxi's sometimes wait at reception, or they will calll one for you, and it won't cost more than 50,000VND, less than $2. To get back, we simply flagged a taxi on the street, making sure the turned the meter on when we got in. We ate at the Sailing Club one night, great bar and restaurant right on the beach. On the other night we made the mistake at eating at "Good Morning Vietnam"; Don't! Bad food and service, and 3 people were over charged within 5 minutes. There looked to be many nice restaurants along the main strip, so have a look around.

We book a trip through the hotel, $25 each, for 4 hours in a jeep to the sand dunes, a fishing village, fairy stream and red canyon. The trip was good, but the driver simply dropped us off in these different places, and we were only out for an hour and three quarters. It would be easier, and hugely cheaper to get a taxi to the Fairy Stream and Canyon which are in the same place, as there are guides there waiting to walk you up it. I got the feeling they weren't official, as they wanted their tip before we got back to the beginning, but they were nice kids who helped us to avoid the deeper bits, and pointed out some points on interest. It is well worth a visit. Again, the sand dunes could easily be reached by taxi. Be prepared for lots of children to surround you as soon as you get there, trying to sell you a go at sledging down. If you don't want to, they seem to take the no at face value and leave you alone eventually. If you don't fancy doing it by taxi, there are many tour operators along the main strip, so compare prices, rather than doing it through the hotel.

It was a relaxing resort, nice to walk along the beach at night, but like most of the Vietnam we found, really shuts down around 10pm, which actually became quite refreshing.

Romana is a new resort just outside from the tourist area of Mui Ne. All the shops and bars can be reached by 5 min taxi ride for about 2.00USD. The resort gardent are very well kept and the swimming pool is great with amazing views. It is worth paying for villa with priavet swimming pool, it cost about USd120.00 a night including breakfast. The villas are clean with outdoor bath and great views. The food in the restaurants is good and reasonably priced. There is a nice SPA and tennis court. The resort is really quiet so if you are after night life or activities maybe this place is not for you. if you just want to enjoy a great pool, lazing at the beach or just doint anything this is an amazing place. The beach is rocky but was cleaned twice a day. At this moment this is the nicest resort in the area. Let's see what Princess d'Annam will offer if ever opens.
