“Thank god we found the Sunshine Beach”
Reviewed July 5, 2010

We walked the length of the beach (and it's a very long beach) searching for an absolute beachfront room that we could afford ... thank god we stumbled across the Sunshine Beach. We jagged a beachfront villa at a price I still can't believe and settled in for three days of beaches and food and beer and relaxation. We had just come from Saigon so this place was a welcome tranquil haven after so much madness. We loved this place and were sorry to leave. Comfortable room, great little inside/outside bathroom setup, great small restaurant where we sat and ate and drank for hours. Perfect place for us.

We fell in love with Sunshine Beach in 2005... and have since returned 3 times! Things have changed since then, both for the better and for the worse. While the grounds and reception are immaculate and much improved, service has gone the other way. Upon arriving, we were informed our room was not ready. After a series of excuses and delays turning into an ongoing 2-hour saga (after a 6 hour bus ride no less), we realized that the previous tenants were given a late check-out at our expense (they were still there while we waited!!). Staff were very elusive with us and offered nothing for our inconvenience.

Finally got to our room, which overall is a pretty sweet set-up–but beware the dingy bathrooms. Ours had a shower curtain so badly infested with black mold it was toxic. Ditto on the fumigation story from the previous review. They've sprayed the grounds (and all over our things on the terrace) at least 3 times in our 2-week stay.

The free breakfast is definitely a nice touch, but go for the fruit salad/yoghurt. Not much to say for the other items (the croque monsieur is the size of a toddler's fist, and the sausage's are toe shaped hot-dog wieners). A warning, they only have one CD, so you WILL be listening to the same songs over and over and over again, all day all night.

In the past, DVDs were complimentary, now they are available for rent only. Motorbike rentals are on offer for a staggering 100,000 dong/per hour!!!! A joke. Go up the road to Sinh Cafe instead, because that's what you'll pay for the whole day. Laundry is available on a per item basis which will run you a hefty tab, but you can get it done perfectly (and for dirt cheap) just across the street instead. It's true they've become quite stingy over the years, but that's likely just a condition of the rapid development of the area.

Some advice: bargain your price for the rooms, as everyone gets a different rate. When we booked in advance, we were informed we would be getting a discounted rate (because of our extended 14 night stay). However, upon arriving we realized we were actually paying the inflated peak-season rate for the better rooms (even though we were staying in the furthest rooms on the compound)... and for days after peak season. That's double the price from our original stay, from the best room to the worst :(

All things considered, they have a great spot on the beach, tea time is a welcome mid-day treat and the overall vibe is casual. I would recommend this place, but don't have any expectations. It's a hit or miss.

…the rooms aren’t so good for the price. We stayed for 6 days and the room was quite awkward for the two of us. The worst part is the ghetto bathrooms, really grungy. The hot water only lasts a few minutes, and the water pressure is low. We booked for 6 nights but management would not give a discount past $36/night on the room or offer a better room, which was very surprising given they were mainly empty. They also wanted 30,000 dong for a bicycle rented at 4PM. Very stingy.

This does not reflect on the staff because they were all nice.

The room was among the smallest and most expensive we had in Vietnam, and also happened to have the worst bathroom. Having said that, the garden is pretty and the property is right on the beach so it’s a trade off—except keep in mind that there is only one road and that means everything is literally on the beach or across the street from the beach. Next time I will try to find a better value hotel. When I told some tourists how much we were paying they were shocked we spent so much, there are many cheaper rooms to be found! We were pretty happy though, all things considered. We work while we travel and needed the WiFi, the signal was weak but it got the job done.

Unfortunately they fumigated the grounds one morning without letting the guests know. A staff member walked all around the garden, past all the rooms spewing big clouds of toxic chemicals with a loud machine. The sight of this chemical cloud was so outrageous I took photos. There was a cute yellow bird that visited me one day and after the spraying I never saw it again, I hope it was a coincidence.

In spite of all this the property is really nice, the beachfront is lovely, and the balconies on the room have wall outlets, which was great for us.

We stayed at Sunshine beach for 4 nights, and found it to be really relaxing and chilled out. The location is right in the middle of the main road, with everything you need within easy walking distance - there's a fantastic restaurant opposite called the Hoang Vu where we ate all the time. The restaurant at the hotel was under some construction work, so we got a reduced rate as breakfast wasn't included (21 dollars), and I booked this in advance. The rooms had two very large beds, TV, balcony (we had the garden view, which was lovely), safety box, and ensuite. They were cleaned twice a day! I'm sure they watched for you leaving on the evening so they could nip in and give the room the once over, get rid of the sand.

The beach was nice, and the sun gets really hot. We saw kite surfers and windsurfers, however swimming is a bit risky as the sea is a little rough and cold with a bit of an undercurrent - we found the beach at Nha Trang much better for swimming and relaxing.

But over all, this hotel was one of the highlights of our trip, as the atmosphere and pace was just wonderful compared to the cities and busier tourist spots.

3 friends and I stayed here for 2 nights. We had come up from HCMC after 2 weeks of volunteering. What a great choice!

The location was good - the price even better!!!!! and the rooms were clean and comfortable. There was no breakfast provided because of the construction work - but no change in the price. We had 2 twin rooms and then changed to a single room - i had accommodation elsewhere and then their solution was to put a sun lounger mattress on the floor. When we tried to find another solution the lady at the front desk agreed on putting a mattress in the other room and not paying extra as we were not provided breakfast.. We thought that was a fair swap. No mattress and no where for one of our friends to sleep. Other than this blip in the stay - I would very much recommend this resort for a cheap and cheerful holiday in the sun. Just try not to travel with awkward numbers and stay here.

We stayed at this resort for 4 days then left for Dalat. We liked the hotel so much that when we returned to Mui Ne, we stayed for a further 6 days! Our room had two large single beds (large enough for a couple to share one bed) and had air con, cable TV, fridge, safe, and a decent en-suite bathroom. The best thing was the balcony which was large enough for two sun loungers and which overlooked the sea, the palm trees and the lovely lawn area. The rate of $32 USD (inc. tax) also included a buffet breakfast and you could also order an item from the menu (museli, fruit & yoghurt or eggs & bacon etc), so was pretty good value. Breakfast was served at a table on the lawn, so a lovely setting. There is also free Wi-Fi in the rooms and an area at reception where you can plug in your laptop and log on. The location was perfect, pretty much in the middle of the long strip of hotels, restaurants etc and very close to "Jibes", which was great for kiteboarding / windsurfing lessons and also has a great beachfront bar and restaurant. (We ate there pretty much every day!) The hotel itself is set right on the beach and has its own sun loungers on the sand. The staff were very helpful and booked our bus tickets to Dalat and Nha Trang for us. We would highly recommend this resort and found it to be excellent value for money.

Stayed here for three nights and despite bad weather we greatly enjoyed our stay at Sunshine Beach. We opted for a 'partial sea-view room' and at $25 it was great value. We could hear the waves crashing as we went to sleep and their palm-tree filled gardens make for a little oasis. The rooms themselves are spotlessly clean and a good size, with large TVs, comfy beds and tasteful decoration. The included breakfast was always exemplary- with a choice of tasty options including fresh pancakes, omelettes and the usual tea, coffee, fresh juice, toast etc. This is usually served in the gardens overlooking the sea and was a lovely way to start the day.

The staff were extremely helpful and there were cheap motorbikes to rent as well as a complementary DVD service. All in all it was fantastic value and we would definitely go back. Other places along the beach really didn't look half as good, but then this all depends on your budget. Top marks.

  • Liked — Right on the beach, great rooms and a tasty breakfast.
