I was fascinated by the Cham culture after visiting the temple in Na Trang and seeing other ruins as we drove up the coast from Saigon to Nam Dinh. It was also delightful to see the actual objects ai had only viewed online or in books previously. The temple dancers are of course my favorite statute. Did they really look like that?

The Cham museum is well displayed and well labeled. The Cham are a relatively obscure culture that thrived in Vietnam. At a glance their sculpture looks like Khmer but it is in fact different. If this sort of conversation bores you...do not go!

The various archaeological exhibits were worthy pieces of art. The intricate designs showed a rich culture and high degree of artisan art. They also revealed the religious setting of the yester years. However, more could be done in terms of :
- more details in commentary notes pertaining to the exhibits.
- more care in the way they are being displayed.
- a greater level of security around the exhibits.
- maybe personnel can be sent overseas to study museum art display.
I feel that the way exhibits are being handled/treated reveals the level of importance/significance we give to them.

I went to the Cham at 10am so it was a welcome relief from the 37 degree heat outside. The entrance fee was also very reasonable at 40,000 I think it was. The museum was quite small and like some other Vietnamese museums it has very little English, or any other language for that matter. It is more of an art gallery, with an array of 800 year old sculptures that are very authentic looking, and would perhaps be a central feature of many Western museums. Having less reading does come at the cost of insight, however I prefer to do many shorter events in one day, and this museum was great for a 45 minute stop to learn a bit more about Vietnamese minority culture.
