It would be churlish to make any adverse comments as anything constructive we might say is out of the hands of owners/management of this property.
We stayed 4 nights having been recommended over 2 years ago when it had just opened. Any TA reviews that highlighted constructive comments have been taken on board and we found the experience heavenly.
We had a pool villa to die for with 4 poster bed, lounge, his/her bathroom, double seated bath, shower etc. The pool was well used during our time there and coming from England was lovely and warm for us!
We used the pool bar for lunch, drinks and one evening meal. The food and drinks were of high standards and were comparable to what you would expect to pay in any 5 star hotel (I did remedy an error of a £43 gin and tonic but do read your check before you sign for it. It actually cost less than £4 after query).
The main restaurant was used for one of the best varied breakfasts you will find anywhere. There are selected luxury items you can add to each breakfast which I am sure you will find fun!
Michelle the GM and her management staff were always available and keen to gather feedback as well as update guests on what the hotel group were planning in future. There was very little we would change about our stay.
Each day your package includes 2 treatments which comprise about 90 minutes. We enjoyed his and hers treatments. You can choose the strength of your massage as well as the type of oil.
The treatment rooms were classy and immaculate (as per the whole resort really) and the staff hard working, if a little lacking in English skills. We were told that the staff had English lessons and this was evident with the waiting and reception staff. The Spa staff less so given the need for serenity! We spent ages chatting with staff that were keen to improve their English and obviously to interact with the guests.
The property itself is low rise along China beach just outside of the city of Da Nang. Outside the front is the old US Air base, still with walls and concrete aircraft hangars. Go before it gets too built up!
Beside the resort of 80 or so rooms there are some imposing Las Vegas resort hotels which were not to our liking. Thank goodness we chose Fusion Maia. The beach is endless silver sand for miles each way and we saw sunrise each morning from the beach. At this time of year (December) the South China Sea is a bit rough so walking and paddling was our only (if delightful) option.
A lovely touch at Fusion Maia, is the courtesy bus to Hoi An, a gorgeous lantern adorned town about 30 minutes drive away.
The first bus goes at 0930 (don’t forget to book) and was full when we went although cabs are plentiful and possibly a second 12 seater bus could be laid on.
The bus drops you at The Fusion lounge (in Hoi An obviously) by the river, where we had pre-booked our breakfast for 1000 (you can have breakfast anywhere/anytime on resort or at the lounge).
We had a wonderful breakfast chosen from their set/a la carte menu which set us up for visits to shops and the market in town. Whilst we didn’t, we could have borrowed bikes from the lounge to see the town.
Whilst in Hoi An we had clothes and shoes made and arranged to pick them up 24 hours later. Every one we dealt with was there on time, as agreed, smiling and produced good quality goods. This sums up how we found the Vietnamese people, happy, humorous and hard working.
We visited Hoi An at night on two occasions and caught the last bus back (2130 pickup) from the Fusion lounge to collect our goods as well as dine at Cargo which in on the Fusion Maia recommended list, which they provide guests with.
The only thing I would say about Fusion Maia is that if it were in Hoi An it would warrant even more superlatives. As it is, the company is opening a property in Hoi An in 2014 but not sure if it is the Fusion concept that Maia provides so well.
We dined in the main hotel dining room on one night, al fresco, and enjoyed the food, the service and the ambience.
Our time at Fusion Maia flew by and we would recommend this place to anyone touring the country to make the effort to include this on your itinerary.
Da Nang has a modern efficient Airport about 15 mins away with efficient Vietnam Airlines Airbuses so there are no excuses not to go!
