Hoi An – in central coastal Vietnam
Hoi An is a great historical village about 30 kms south of Da Nang, almost half way between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Heaps of shopping, things to see and unbelievably cheap, brilliant food and one of the nicest, cutest beaches I’ve even been to in Southern Asia. But the hotels are the thing – you can’t enjoy stuff, if the hotel is lousy.
Just come back from my second time in Hoi An – it’s just one of those places you could fall in love with very easily. I can really recommend the Hai Au (high aw) hotel, which is on the main drag leading to Cua Dua beach 2 kms away. I visited the hotel the first time I came to Hoi An but it was booked out – I took one look and wanted to stay there simply because of the service and the staff. I got to know them reasonably well.
Heaps of rooms, decent prices for both the rooms and food and around the two or three star quality mark. Try to get a balcony room if you can – the views are pretty good. The rooms are definitely a cut above others in that same quality bracket as their pretty roomy, TV, fridge, beds etc but most importantly, really clean and modern bathrooms. Dvd
-players, motorcycles and bikes can be organised right outside the door and the swimming pool out the back is small but really handy at the end of a long sweaty day!
The foyer is a killer – all old Vietnamese and Chinese style furniture and walls. The Internet is free depending on the price of the room and the buffet style breakfast is pretty good and included in most room prices. Ms Kim has recently opened a restaurant extending off the breakfast area towards the street, serving grilled meats and the usual yummy Vietnamese dishes – pretty cute with overhead lamps and the beginnings of a overhead vineyard canopy.
The position of the hotel is cool also – half way to the beach and the old Town and easy to find after dark. You can easily walk back there after a night in the old town which is less than five minutes down the road without having to take a over-priced motorcycle taxi.
But the service is just amazing – nobody’s in a rush, they’re always patient, know all the places, the prices etc and they give you a decent map of the town! It’s one of the few hotels I’ve stayed at in Vietnam where they have enough English and attitude to be helpful and friendly. Most of the staff are young and always joking and they seem to be genuinely interested in what we are doing and are we enjoying it.
Check it out. There’s pics
