“Dont understand the fuss”
Reviewed February 21, 2013

After reading such good reviews on Tripadvisor, we booked in to this hotel for two nights. Upon arrival the staff at front desk wanted to hold our passports until checkout. We witnessed that other guest handed theirs over, however we have travelled throughout Asia and photocopies have always sufficed at every other hotel we have stayed in. We insisted that our passports be photocopied and returned this was done hesitantly.

Our room was fairly basic, old and in need of a face lift. We found the staff very overbearing, in your face and plastic with over rehearsed repetitive lines constantly. On our second night, not long after we had returned from town, we had brought some snacks and drink in with us and had passed by reception. Our phone rang shortly later asking if we had taken beers from the fridge at reception, we found this quite accusational in nature and were quite insulted that they were accusing us of this.

The food in the restaurant was poor and over priced, the Cargo club is a bit of a walk but well worth it for the food. It was very uncomfortable passing through the restaurant, which was one of the entrances to the hotel, as you were hounded by a member of staff roaring after you "where are you going", very intrusive and embarrassing in front of other guests as we are very private people.

We wanted to stay in Hoi an for one more night and looked for a room here, as it would only be one more night. Thankfully they were booked out and we had the good fortune of booking into the Vaia hotel across the road which only opened on the 5th February 2013, hence the reason why its not on Tripadvisor. They had no standard available but did have a deluxe available which, was only $6 extra per night compared to the Hai Au hotel. For this $6 dollar extra we got a deluxe room which was a good size, clean, bright, new, LCD tv, in room safe. Arrival drinks, evening cocktails and free bike rental were also included, a fantastic hotel with great staff, and made the Hai Au look pale in comparison. So disappointed we didn't book this for the three nights.

For hotels in Hoi An this one is at the cheaper end of the spectrum and you get what you pay for. Bed linen was clean but towels were threadbare. They advertise a tea kettle. This actually consisted of a plastic thermos-like container containing dirty tepid water that we were afraid to drink. There were ants in the room.

We requested a sun-lit, windowed room with twin beds and were given one with a single large bed and a window that faced a wall on the ground floor. When we requested a change they 1st tried to say that there were no rooms available, then were able to find one at twice the rate quoted.

Staff seemed outwardly friendly but were not really helpful. Their over-enthusiastic greetings were extremely fake and off-putting. The habit of several staff members calling people “my dear” was at best extremely unprofessional and, for native English speakers, sounded very condescending. At check-out, they tried to get creative with their math and I had to correct them so I wouldn’t be overcharged.

Breakfast buffet was a surprise with a good variety of choices, though the set-up was confusing with ½ being self-service and ½ being staffed. Not all stations were constantly manned and staff would get snippy if we tried to serve ourselves.

The hotel is situated a bit of a walk from the center of town where there are tons of better choices for about the same price. The hotel is undeserving of such a high tripadvisor rating. I read some of the lesser starred reviews and found them mostly to be spot on.

We booked this hotel on booking.com for around £27 per night. Based on our experience of travelling in Asia over the last six months, this was too high a price for the quality of room. I would expect to pay £15 for this room, which looked out onto a wall and was plainly decorated. The hotel lobby was tatty and cluttered.
In the end, because we wanted somewhere special to stay, we asked to check out. They said - quite reasonably - that they would charge us for half a day. Not a problem, we agreed to that. However it took us over an hour to persuade them that by cancelling our booking.com booking we had paid online for a one night already. Staff were sweet but entirely clueless on how the site worked. Hugely frustrating, and a waste of our time in Hoi An. I would not bother with this hotel.

The reviews before mine are accurate so I don't have much else to add. I will note though that the bed was excellent, the pillows were flat, the pool was nice but only gets sun for a short time each day, the walls were thin, the wifi was strong and fast, the reception staff was friendly and I could do without the roosters next door. I stayed for only one night. I moved to the Hai Yen hotel just around the corner. It is a step down from Hai Au, however it is half the price.
On a side note, if you are in Da Nang and want to come to Hoi An, I took the local yellow bus for 50000D (the foreigner rate - 15000 for locals). It is 100K+ for a taxi or motorbike. You can stand at a bus stop on Le Duan or Phan Chau Trinh street and flag it down when it passes. It drops you off about a 15 min walk from the tourist area.

We stayed here for four nights and the hotel really made our stay. The staff were just so attentive and there to look after you and help you in your stay. They had excellent recommendations for everything we wanted to do, including helping us hire a scooter to get out to the beaches and our excursions into the old town and its attractions. They quickly learn your names and greet you enthusiastically every time your return, with Yummy going out of her way to ensure you are enjoying your stay.
As others have commented the hotel has a great location, a simply walk to anywhere in the town, but very quiet and out of the way.
We were there for the festival where the entire town is required to shut off its fluorescent lights and only light lanterns which was amazing. However, we loved Hoi An as a town anyway with its many restaurants and bars and cafes.
As weary backpackers used to less desirable accommodation the breakfast was out of this world for us, with a huge selection or fruits and breads and bacon and eggs.
The room was large and very clean with everything we required, the pictures other travelers have posted show you everything you need to know.
Would definitely stay here again when we hopefully return to this great little Vietnamese town.

We stayed at the Hai Au hotel for 11 nights so that we were in Hoi An for the full moon celebrations. The hotel was ideally situated, about a 10 minute walk to the central market, close enough to be handy for the old town but far enough away not to be disturbed by any noise. If you can coincide your stay in Hoi An with a full moon, the atmosphere is wonderful as many of the pedestrianised streets and buildings are illuminated by Chinese lanterns, which adds to the atmosphere of the old town. The Hai Au hotel is also situated about a 4km bike ride from the beach, and bikes can be rented direct from the hotel for $1 a day. All the staff without exception are very friendly and helpful and speak excellent English. Within a short time of arriving they know your name and always greet you whenever they see you, personally by name, which makes you feel more like friends than guests. Our room was on the top floor, with a large corner balcony, and was very spacious and well-equipped, including a laptop and earphones for Skyping. There are safety deposit boxes newly installed in the rooms. Breakfast was very good, and was served buffet-style with eggs cooked to order and the restaurant also offered a good range of Eastern and Whesbtern food, well cooked and reasonably priced. The one draw back is there is no elevator, although there are only 3 floors and they encourage you to ask for assistance with your bags. We arranged a couple of massages through the hotel, with a local spa, Aloe Vera, which were generously discounted and were extremely good.

Room Tip: Corner rooms have balconies.
