“Most welcome reception ever!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 1, 2012

Hai Au is a lovely budget hotel with exceptional service from the girls on reception. They remembered everyone's name and made a point of asking how you were, and if there was anything they could do - every day. Even though we arrived after 11pm, they were still there to greet us and even made sure that we had a takeaway breakfast for the following morning (we were going out at 5am). The buffet breakfast was great with a lot of choice. I'm an incredibly fussy vegan and even I was happy! There was fresh fruit, an omelette station, breads, preserves, cold cuts, cheese, fresh juices and local options too. The rooms were spacious with a small (v. small) balcony and kept well maintained. The bed was huge, Ii think 2 doubles turned into 1! The plate of fresh fruit (comp) on arrival was a lovely touch. The location was equidistance between the old quarter and beach so good for both - however it does mean a 20-30 minute walk or a cab drive to either. Or just hire a scooter for the stay, we did and it was the beat way to get around. My only negative was that the swimming pool didn't receive any sunlight but this is unavoidable with the way the building is built. It is a little on the small side but I still did lengths in it. That said, this isn't really a negative as it didn't spoil our stay one bit - the beach is close enough! The one and only other thing would be that there were a couple of old soap bars left on the towel shelve from the previous people. This is me being very picky but it's just a note for the hotel so they are aware. Overall, Hai Au is a great and fun place to stay. If you feel blue at all on your stay, you certainly won't once you've walked downstairs to reception - the girls are really what make Hai Au so special.

We chose this hotel as it was at the time, top of the list of hotels on TripAdvisor, a place it definitely doesn’t deserve to be. I’d previously stayed at the Betel Garden Homestay in Hoi An but felt like trying a different hotel, very slightly closer to town, so we didn’t always need to take a cab home (which is what we had to do at Betel Garden). I definitely regretted this decision. I wouldn’t recommend the Hai Au hotel based on my experience of the hotel alone but definitely not having had the experience of Betel Garden 2 years ago.

Things didn’t start well trying to book an Airport Transfer, I tried first doing it as a request on the booking with the agent but we didn’t hear anything. We then tried to email them using the email on the website but again didn’t get a response. We finally rang them and this was booked in with a very friendly reception. But when we arrived at Danang Airport (which is a very small airport and we were the only flight, which was also on time), there was no sign of a driver with a plaque. Plenty for other hotels but not ours. We waited for awhile and debated ringing them but taxi drivers were beckoning us for the same price as the hotel would charge (though on meter), so we tired & hot we decided to take a metered taxi. Bad decision, they ripped us off my taking the long route around to Hoi An and we ended up being overcharged. As a rule in Vietnam take Mai Linh or Vinasun taxis only and you won’t have this problem (we only learnt after this debacle). Obviously if the driver had met us the way all the other drivers managed to we wouldn’t be in this position. In retrospect we should have paid data roaming charges and rang the hotel as it’d have been cheaper than the taxi ripping us off but it’s not a situation you want to come across. They were very kind at reception – we’re unsure if the blame was with them or us (though how they could have failed to meet us off a flight to such a tiny airport still puzzles) and offered us a room upgrade, though this was simply to a much bigger room with 2 double beds, which was too large for our needs and not cosy, so we stuck with our original room, which was clean but very basic.

The bathroom particularly wasn’t that nice and quite aged. The hot water tank is sat over the bath in the same position the shower head should be so the shower head is lower, about mid torso on me, and even lower for my taller other half, pretty annoying. They also have slapped on layers of unevenly and unprofessionally laid on plaster around the bath instead of tiling and it was all together not the nicest budget bathroom I’ve stayed in. The bed was quite hard (typical of Vietnam though) and the room had 2 light settings – bright fluorescent tube lighting or very dim lamps which didn’t add to the ambience. Hot water you have to ask for from reception, we were there 3 nights and housekeeping didn’t bother to change the mugs we drank out of for 3 nights and we got fresh fruit only on the first day (Betel had it every day).

We also had to do laundry with them which was very cheap but not done very well – not sure if they really washed and dried them in one day but stains that were on the clothes were still faintly there but now highly fragranced.

Breakfast was pretty decent, freshly made omelettes, soup noodles, baguettes and a good selection of fruit.

Whether you like being greeted as soon as you step down the stairs by your personal names being called out will depend on personal taste, I know some people find this very friendly but we found it a little disconcerting. Especially as it usually was followed by questions on what we were doing – and not because they were interested in our holiday but because they could sell us tours/spa/tailors that were linked to the hotel and on which they would earn a lot of commission. It’s interesting because every tailor & spa (not recommended by Hai Au) told us about the commission the hotel staff earned on their ‘recommendations’ and so wherever we did go we’d be overcharged - so it seems that they are well known for this practise. We didn’t use their recommendations so cannot comment on them but it did sour the experience and although we did find them very friendly as per the other reviews, the 'sales orientation' made their friendliness seem rather fake and sales-oriented. Contrast this to Betel as well as the hotel we stayed in Ho Chi Minh City who never asked us a question which would then lead into selling things.

The pool was frankly a bit grim. We made the mistake of looking out the window and saw a lovely pool and thought it was Hai Au’s but it wasn’t. The pool itself looked ok but the loungers were covered with mould and really unattractive so we didn’t stay on them for long.

On the last day the airline company changed our flight to a very late night one so we asked to have a late check in, they said based on availability they would charge us half the room rate to stay till 6pm, possibly 9pm (which is not half the hours of a room but anyway). They told us in the morning there was availability till 9pm so we based our day around the fact we could get back to hotel, have time to shower and pack as well as have a nap – we arrived back at 6pm and were told they had messed up the booking and we not only didn’t have the room we had to shower and pack asap and get out of the room as the next guests were waiting for it. We were pretty quick given the circumstances but they were still chasing us by phone and cleaners were waiting outside the room to clean it etc. It just capped a stay that we didn’t really value - even though it was very cheap, the aircon worked well so we slept well and for the price, the rooms are fine.

Hoi An itself we loved but all in all, of the 2 hotels I stayed in Hoi An I would by far recommend Betel Garden (they also as a homestay style lodge have a free evening dinner with fellow guests which is very pleasant) but if not the Betel then anywhere but Hai Au – very disappointed.

We stayed for 3 nights on this lovely hotel and we were very satisfied. We paid 34$ per night for a double bed with breakfast, WiFi, pool, fruits and water. It's 15 minutes to the waterfront in the old town, you can rent bikes or motorbikes or walk. The staff is very friendly, knows your name from the beginning and is very helpful in organizing things. They pick you up at the railway station in Danang for 16$ and Anna runs the lovely Aloe Vera Spa on the mainstreet (where all Spas are located) and gives you 30% discount on all treatments when booked through the hotel. We already miss all of you!

I stayed for 5 nights in this hotel. The room did not have a safety box, but you could close the wardrobe with a locker, what was good enough to me. Beds were comfortable and the minibar in the room with complimentry water was great. The girls at the desk are lovely and will assist you with whatever you want. The included breakfast is nice and the reception girls would make a "bag to go" when you have a day trip or have to leave to the airport before 6am, what was really nice and special.
The location was ok, just out of a busy street so the room could be a little noisy. It is a 10min walk into the Ancient Town and to the river. What would definitively not be a problem... I was travelling alone and the city gets really dark and quiet after 10pm, so I felt a little scaried walking back by myself, (even though that city feels really safe)... But if I would be with a friend, I would not feel it at all!!! I got taxi back during the other nights, what was totally fine and not expensive.

We stayed in a family room for 4 nights. The room was very big and beautiful. Beds were comfortable and the minibar in the room with complimentry water was great. The girls at the desk are lovely and will assist you with whatever you want. THe included breakfast is really nice and there is plenty of food. It is a 10min walk into the Ancient Town and to the river. It is still in quite a busy place and there are plenty of restuarants nearby. The pool whilst small was very clean and cold and great after a hot day in town. I would highly recommend this hotel for families.

Good little hotel close to centre of hoi an
We had booked and paid for 3 superior rooms and when we arrived they only had 2 rooms
The staff sorted pretty quickly by calling the manger in who was on her day off
They gave us a standard room in its place as there were no superiors available and refunded us the difference on exit
Room was clean, air con cold and dvd player handy after a long day
The only negative was the scooter hire lady outside the hotel and I think not affiliated with hotel who tried to change for damage on the bike that was already on it
On the plus some of our group left shopping in the scooter and the hotel staff retrieved and sent to our next hotel
All up cheap cheerful and recommended

What an awesome place to stay. Gorgeous towel displays on the beds are such a nice touch. The staff absolutely go out of their way to make things easy for you. They are so obliging and friendly and really good at remembering your names. We were due to check out on the morning of my birthday. When we came home from dinner the night before I was presented with an absolutely gorgeous delicious birthday cake by Ana. Breakfast is really nice too, great selection. Staff are very helpful with regard to shopping, taxis, directions, booking taxis etc. Highly recommend this as THE place to stay in Hoi An. Great location. Thank you Ana and all your staff (hi Ruby and Cherry and everyone else) ... will be sure to recommend you to all our friends as well :)
