“Average rooms, poor service”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 12, 2013

Pretty average rooms for the price, had to ask for the AC remote and they were reluctant to give it to me, interrogating the price I payed for the room.

It's a close walk to old town, and lots of cheap restaurants close by but you're better off staying at the Hotels next door.

I paid $10 for a double bed room at 19 Ba Trieu St. The price is on the cheaper side in Hoi An, and it is in a decent location. But, the staff are not so helpful or nice. I kept hearing a noise in my room, and the staff were unable to tell me what it was. The morning I was checking out, I came back from breakfast and I found what I believe to be a mouse dropping right by my bed, but the staff insisted it was a gecko dropping. It was a bit strange, as I had taken my key with me during the day, but the staff let themselves in to make up the bed when I was out. Probably to clean up other mouse droppings. There are much nicer hotels in Hoi An for $15, and you should be able to get a very nice room in Vietnam for over $10.

After a few seriously uncomfortable stays in more expensive hotels, I wasn't expecting much from Hop Yen, at $14/night during peak season. After all, it's one of many generic cheap hotels in the city. No stairs, no room service, no coathangers-- Well my room had a few coat hangers hand-shaped out of wire. Which sort of adds character.

But Hop Yen turned out to be quite nice. Nothing fancy; but it's got all the basics. Hot water is steady and certain. The internet is fast and uninterrupted. Best of all, it's quiet. The walls are nice and thick. I got some of the best sleep i've had in weeks, and that counts for sooo much. Plus the staff are nice, there's food downstairs, and the location is pretty good--within a cluster of cheap tourism, to be sure, but within reasonable walking distance of old town hoi an. Plus it's across the street from volcano, a trashy nightclub, a convenience store that makes killer hamburgers, and a great knock-off dvd store.

Room Tip: the dorm looked squalid, a small room packed with a few dozen beds. Splurge a bit and get your own r...

Very nice hotel, in a good area (old city of hoi an).
very friendly stuff.
good prices for all the small stuff you will need sometimes (like cookies, laundrey, water, food, etc.)
rooms are clean and quiet.
its possible to organise your trips at the travel agency there and get some good advices for hoi an as well!
i was happy about a lovely small room for 5 $ !
cheap and good and a lot of other backbagers here! GOOD FUN..

Hot shower, comfy clean beds, LCD tv, spacious rooms. Slightly dated, but good value for money at the end of the day. Food isn't great. 4 comps available to use in the main lobby aswell. Drinks are really cheap.

I stayed here for 3 nights in an air conditioned double room. It was located at the front of the hotel so had a nice balcony onto the street, with big doors so the room was very bright. The room was pretty small, not much space to put your bags and stuff.
The room was very clean and the shower was really good.
There was a good fridge and the room was cleaned daily.
The staff would turn off the air con during the day and at random times throughout the day and would not give us a remote to change the temperature so one night I woke up absolutely freezing, this was very annoying, but for such a cheap price ($12 a night) it wasn't that much of a problem.

it's located about a 5 minute walk from the centre of the town, so location wise it's great. There is a small supermarket across the road and there are many places to rent bikes on the same street.

Yes, the rooms in Hop Yen Hotel smell very damp, the air conditioner won't work until you instruct the staff downstairs to turn it on each time you come back to your room, and it's not an overly pleasant hotel experience. But for $15 for a 3 person room, $12 for 2 people, and available dorms, it's not too bad considering the prices of other hotels in Hoi An.

However, I will have to say that the front desk staff were relatively helpful for Vietnamese standards, you're able to buy bus tickets and whatever else you need for good prices, and the drinks/snacks available are very cheap, so they offer great take away choices.

Also, the location is less than a 5 minute walk from Hoi An Old Town, and is itself on a rather pleasant street.

Overall, for the price, it's an alright place to crash for a couple of days while in Hoi An.
