“Big disappointment”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 3, 2014

We booked the long life hotel thru AGODA however when we showed up the staff informed us that they did not have our booking and they did not have any vacancies. The reception staff at Long Life made a phone call and advised that PHo Hoi Riverside had one available room and could take us ( we are a family of 5)

Not having much choice and glad to have a bed for the night as we arrived just before 6pm we checked in to PHO HOI Riverside and as soon as we were shown our room we were immediately disappointed. We were given a ground floor riverside interconnecting bungalow which was damp and musky perhaps this was still drying out from November flooding. The rooms were dark , the bed were only made with sheets which were very thin and worn there was blankets in the cupboard but these did not match. It was cold in Hoi An when we visited and we had some rain and 4 days of clouds and overcast weather and some showers and the hotel does not have any heating the air con only has cooling which made it very uncomfortable we all came home from dinner and had to jump into bed to keep warm. One of the bathrooms had a foul sewer smell coming from it and we had to keep the door closed, when we advised reception they told us that they would get someone to come clean it - this did not require a clean it was a sewer smell coming from the pipes - and just as I expected the room continued to smell so we all had to share the one bathroom. The water ran out after the second shower so the kids has to go without washing . The shower that we did have resulted in the bathroom floor getting soaked due to the position of the shower head and the inadequate shower curtain. They did not supply enough towels to accommodate the number of guest and the towels that were supplied were not much bigger than hand towels and worn thin. The lamp kept flickering. The room was dark and paint was peeling away on some areas on the walls. The second day they moved us to two upstairs rooms , these rooms did not have the musty wet smell however city came with a whole set of different issues
My husbands took one room with our son while I took the other room next door with our other two children. Both showers did not work. Room 220 had either cold or hot shower and no temperature In between. Room 219 had a busted shower rose which squirted all the water up the wall. I advised reception but nothing was done. So on holiday and kids already gone without a wash due to the last room running out of hot water and we had to fill baths to bath 5 of us. The staff did not speak much English so communication was a challenge. The manager did appear to be on the ball but had to communicate to his staff who then tried to translate to us and they themselves did not speak or seem to understand English that great . I noted several staff walking around but there didn't seem to be any consistency in dress code the girl at reception was dressed in traditional clothing but had a huge puffy jacket to keep warm. Beds are rock hard and not enough pillows supplied. Breakfast was terrible, did not cater for westerners - they had about 5 different breads, some stale and only one old door toaster that you had to line up to use. No pancakes , waffles or cereals. They also took their time in replacing trays of food or simply didn't replace it at all which forced you to leave or eat what was left available. There was a cat that roamed the dinning room and I saw a waiter kick it flying into the wall. They took our passports for security and not a credit card which always makes me feel uneasy. The only good thing about this place was its location - a nice easy stroll over the bridge and you re in the old city which is lovely. With all the issues I would expect to have paid far less but our experience still set us back $400 AUD for our three nights - book elsewhere

Room Tip: Stay elsewhere this will not be a pleasant stay

I had the executive deluxe room over looking the river and a nice big balcony. Rooms can do with an freshen up but comfy enough. A pleasant easy walk over the bridge to the main part of town full of delicious eating areas. The hotel staff were all friendly and very helpful. Great breaky.

Hoi An was one of my favorite cities in Vietnam so give yourself extra time here as you won't want to leave and it has a unique European romantic city feel with the buildings, rivers, lanterns and little candle boats floating down the rivers of a night.

Room Tip: Do yourself a favor and buy some of the lanterns. I bought 10, the shop that sell's the best one...

This is an excellent 3 star hotel, not 5 star, but excellent 3 star.
If you want. 5 star pay the price. Value for money, we have just arrived home and I would like to congratulate all the staff from reception, security , room cleaners etc.and our lovely breakfast
staff for making our 2nd stay enjoyable.
We had a Bungalow by the river and a Japanese villa(my husband is the king of snoring), we were
very happy as we were just across the way from each other, tell me where in Australia you would
find 2 rooms with a buffet breakfast(excellent)friendly staff, clean for less than $120 a night, close to town and shopping.
I highly recommend this place, to stay in Hoi An Vietnam, don't listen to the whingers, they want 5 star at 3 star price. We are seasoned travelers, value for money, excellent.
Treat them right and you will always get a friendly smile, don't treat them as subservient, they
are not servants, lovely gentle people who have to earn a living the same as most people.
The resort is being refurbished, just remember it is tropical area and old, in Hoi An and surrounding areas don't be put off by a little mould, this gives character to the buildings.
We would like to thank all the staff at Pho Hoi Riverside Resort for all their caring and friendliness, keep it up, you all are lovely people.

Room Tip: Bungalows and Japanese the pick of the rooms.

We booked two nights at the riverside resort, the website boasted free breakfast swimming pools and fitness center. When we arrived we were told that because of the price we paid online they would have to send us to there sister resort Pho Hoi 2 which was across the river about 15 minute walk away and which had no pool no gym and no free breakfast. When we complained they said they would be more then happy to let us stay at the river side resort but we would have to pay a lot more. Even though our confirmation had rather price per night and photos of the river side resort. DON'T STAY HERE. Worst experience I've had with hotels in asia. It's a shame because it looks like a nice place. But management and there website or misleading and money hungry.

Room Tip: My tip is to avoid this place completely. Lot nice rooms for a lot less hassle across the river

We stayed in a beautiful villa overlooking the river and close to the pool. The rooms are sparklingly clean, tastefully decorated and the staff are lovely. It was quiet and peaceful, very relaxing. The hotel bar makes great cocktails. The villas have balconies perfect for watching the world go by and the lights of Hoi Ann at night are so pretty. Make sure you pack insect repellent though.

What can I say? This was by far the worst hotel / accommodation customer service experience I have encountered across 5 continents. We had a lovely time in Hoi An itself and found the locals to be overall friendly; however we were unfortunate to be staying in Hoi An when the floods started. The staff at the hotel were surprisingly calm when voicing concerns about rising flood water and the fact we had just waded through thigh high water in the Old Quarter after dinner. In fact, they laughed at our concerns and told us there was no way the river would rise enough to cause concern. In the morning I was woken at 6:30am from a friend calling to check my partner and I were ok because of the flooding. I was surprised by the call, so went to the door and was alarmed to find the river a foot below! There had been no call, no knock on the door, no notice by the hotel that the river had risen so high! The water surrounded the entire block of rooms we were staying in! My partner and I packed our bags and called reception to ask if we would be evacuated and with a nonchalant reply "what room number? I'll call the manager. Thanks for your call." When the manager came to our door half an hour later we had to wade through the water to take breakfast in the reception with the continually rising floodwater before being moved to another hotel next door. The manager seemed unconcerned by my distress for receiving no warning or notice by hotel staff that the hotel was surrounded by water.
We witnessed several others to be dealt with by the manager with zero compassion, concern or customer care - holding passports ransom until laundry bills were paid, paying for corked wine, demanding full payment for rooms people were evacuated from, and the list goes on. My advice: do not stay her - UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!
