We checked in on the 4th OCt 2013 for 1 night. Although I booked the special room via agoda almost 2 weeks before the trip, when we arrived, we were given a cheaper room. The most annoying thing is the receptionist hadn't informed us of the change before we checked in. He only told us about the change when we asked why the room facility is different from what's shown on Agoda. The answer the receptionist because they have only one special room so the room was not available to us. When we asked why, he said he didn't know and told us to ask Agoda.

For the rate 100 USD/night, this is not the kind of service we expect right?

On the good note, the hotel is nice and well maintained. The only drawback is the bathroom. It doesn't have standing shower so you have to climb in the bathtub. They don't build the bathtub with senior citizens in mind so it's quite high and may be troublesome to get in and out.

Where you choose to stay in Hoi An likely will depend on what you want out of the area. If it is the beach, there’s many beautiful resorts on the sands. If it’s an in-town home base for shopping and perhaps some beach, the gamut runs from backpacker to mid range to high end. We came just for one night to see the ancient part of town, and had no interest in the beaches here. As a result, we chose the Vinh Hung 1 which houses six beautiful guest rooms in one of the old buildings in the heart of old town. It set the perfect tone for this part of our trip, as the hotel itself, being an ancient house, was indeed a living part of the old town, very much like one of the houses people can see with their tickets. We always try to pick where we stay to compliment the different areas we visit, and needless to say this was just perfect.

The room we stayed in was on the first floor, as by the time we arrived the second floor rooms were already taken. While the second floor required stairs, it did offer just a small bit more privacy as the walls are not insulated, but, that is how the houses were built. The inside of the room was furnished in the old style, with warm wood walls with wood shuttered widows that opened into the inner courtyard. The room was quite spacious and included a sitting area for relaxation, and a lavish modern bathroom that just simply magnificent. Breakfast is taken in the front of the first floor, and overlooks the street- just like most of the restaurants in the area, only private. There is also a small balcony on the second floor for sitting and people watching if you’d so like.

Hoi An is a small area all in all, and you can stay on the beach, on the river, or in the “modern” part of town and still have easy access to the old city. But, you can stay at beach resorts anywhere in the world, and doubly so for the more modern affairs offered nearby. But if you are here to soak up the ambiance of a world stood still, trapped in time ( at least architecturally ) this is the choice for you. And walking the streets early in the morning, before the crowds descend into the carless streets is quite a treat. You can enjoy nearly tourist free strolling while picture taking and appreciating the architectural designs.

I understand this is a boutique hotel but to see it rated as low as it is on TA is quite a shame. I feel that the Old Town is a major reason people come here so I would think this would be rated near the top as it's not only the only real lodging in the Old Town, it's also exquisite it it's design & detail. Also, I'm told they are always full ( only 6 rooms ) so do book early if you want this experience.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the second floor which will offer more privacy than those on the first floor.

Stayed recently for the second time. Great location. Exceptional service. Staff are impressive. We would stay again - old world charm in the centre on old Hoi An. Close to lots of shopping and good restaurants. No need to leave the old town!

There are quite a few reasons not to stay here. The rooms are dark and quite warm. There's quite a lot of noise from the street. It's comparatively expensive. The breakfast isn't good.

However, personally, I really enjoyed spending a night here. The historic building is amazing and the rooms are full of charm and character. You really feel like you're immersed in old Hoi An staying here.

Also, the service is very good - in an old-fashioned sort of way, but that fits with the character of the hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for the room that Michael Caine stayed in - it's great.

We stayed at Vin Hung 1 on a Saturday night. The building is mostly made by wood, seems new but built following the local traditional architecture. It has a beautiful courtyard and the room (that we paid 1.500.000 for one night) was really large, with one extra bed, a large bathroom and beautiful furniture. Staying at at Vin Hung 1 gives you also free access to the Vin Hung River Resort facilities, as gym and swimming pool, that is a big advantage. The included breakfast was not impressive, but having it on the lobby facing the street's morning activities was remarkable.
The only disappointments came when it was time to sleep: some of the room's windows were facing the courtyard, and there was no way to shade the light coming from there, all night long.
There was some noise coming from a water pump, so every time somebody in the hotel was using the bathroom, we would now. Finally, the air conditioning unit was leaking water.
Luckily I alway bring earplugs when travelling so this didn't compromise my sleep quality.

You will have to substitute some of the comforts of a resort for this truly historical experience. This place is stylish and cool, situated in a magnificent, centuries old wooden Chinese house.

I was upgraded to a Chinese room, which was very sweet of them. The rooms are large, and stylish. A bit dark, of course, but that's part of the hotel's ambience. The lacquered wood panelling, four poster bed, wine red carpet, the 1920's telephone (amongst other stylish and snazzy 20's details), the grey marble bathroom with its stylish wooden bathtub and furniture, are stunning, and oriental at its most appealing. The hotel is built around an open air courtyard filled with plants, and paper lanterns. At night, its magical.

The breakfast room is basically the front lounge, open onto the street. Jade colour marble floors, high ceilings, fans and tasteful furniture. The food is great, with a wonderful selection of pastries, bread, juices and hot meals, with potatoes, noodles and bacon. The pineapple jam is divine. It's a buffet, so you can eat as much as you want, which is great if you are planning on a long day.

The service is wonderful. Friendly, polite and efficient, from the swift email responses to the car service from Da Nang airport (that waited for me over 2 hours after my flight was delayed coming in from HCMC).

It's central, and makes for a perfect experience. Still, do bear in mind that it will not be like a 5 star beach resort with swimming pool, spa and bar with large airy rooms. And since Hoi An has both, I recommend trying out both. Vinh Hung 1 will provide, without a doubt, the most exotic and inspiring of experiences.

So if you are style aware, and you like authentic historical places, you will like this hotel.

Room Tip: Go for a Chinese room. It's a little more, but is is worth every penny.

This hotel is a most unique, beautiful hotel run by unique, beautiful staff. Binh and Thinh made sure our 7 night stay was all we could want it to be. Being right in the middle of the old town, we could walk out the door and be a part of old Hoi An. Our room was immaculate, cool, quite and very charming. Every night after an extensive day of eating and shopping, we sat on the balcony with a cool drink and watched the beauty of this town stroll by. Faults??? Nope - can't think of any.
