“Lovely Homestay Family”
Reviewed June 3, 2013

We stayed at Van's family for some nights and experienced a great time! The whole family is very nice and helpful. Especially their son speaks quite good English so that all questions can be answered. For breakfast we could choose from a long list of different meals. For a fair amount you can also eat with the family. We enjoyed a delicious dinner with a wide variety of dishes. Further we also rented a motorbike and did a tour with Tin and his brother around Hoi An to nice places.
For 20$ a night it is not a very cheap accommodation, but in consideration of the fact that we spent a lovely time with the family it was worth spending it. We would stay there again and recommend it.

Stayed with Dung & Cuc's family from April 6 to 24 whilst volunteering as an English teacher. Room was clean and comfortable with king size bed, aircon, western style ensuite bathroom. Dung, Cuc and their 2 children made me feel part of the family. Dung speaks reasonable English, Cuc a little English and the 2 children some English, but communication was no problem with the help of a Vietnamese / English dictionary. Had numerous dinners with the family - Cuc is an excellent cook and was great to eat the local food. Visited the local market with Cuc which was an amazing experience. Well maintained bicycle provided as part of the stay. A wonderful experience to live with a family and be part of their daily lives. Showed me the real Vietnam. Cycling around the local area was also incredible. Felt safe and my belongings secure whilst at the homestay.Loved breakfast in the garden courtyard each morning. Can't wait to go back again next year.

We stayed for 4 nights at Van's house. Van and his wife speak a little English, and their younger son speaks good English. Our room was comfortable with a large bathroom and good a/c. Hien took our breakfast order each day from a set list provided to us. However, there must have been something lost in translation as my wife ordered fried eggs two days running, but got omelette instead both days. We didn't feel that there was much opportunity to interact with the family due to our limited Vietnamese and their limited English. We were also disappointed that we did not not get the included dinner at the homestay which is advertised on the website, for stays of 3 nights or more. The Cam Chau homestay is a fair walk from the centre of Hoi An, which is fine in the morning, but too hot to walk in the afternoon. If we were to visit Hoi An again, we would choose a guesthouse closer to the town.
We did find a nice cafe close to the homestay called U Cafe. The cafe is by the river and is run by a Japanese lady. A great spot for a beer at sunset. We also found a great clothes shop called LY on Phan Boi Chau Street. It is run by a lovely lady who is so helpful and does not pressurise you into buying anything. She wants to make sure that whatever clothes you choose are right for you. Prices here are also a lot better than in the main part of town. We found a lot of the shops in the main part of town had salesgirls who were quite rude and had bad attitudes to tourists who just wanted to look, and not necessarily buy. It is a shame that this is becoming more common in Hoi An.
Overall, if you really want to do a homestay, then Cam Chau is as good as any. However, for the money you pay, there are probably better deals closer to the town.

My friend and I stayed for 3 nights with Hue's family. We made a mistake and only booked for the second and third nights, but we when we realised (that day!) they were able to put us up as well as arrange for airport pickup.

The lady we stayed with didn't speak English, but was very friendly and we managed to get by with our basic Vietnamese and some miming! Our room was clean with an ensuite so we had our own space, and she cooked us a lovely breakfast each morning. The island is peaceful and quiet, but also close to town and there were bikes available to cycle into town (about 10mins) or to the beach (about 20mins). When we asked where we could hire a motorbike, someone came over within 2mins and it was ours for the day for 125k VND.

A great experience to stay with a Vietnamese family, and at 420k VND per night we would recommend it.

Where do I even begin! We stayed with the Vit family, and they helped to make our time in Hoi An so memorable. Right from the start we were greeted with warm smiles. From our amazing room, to the delicious breakfasts, and eating a huge lunch with the family, we had had the time of our lives.
Cam Chau homestay is on an "island" of sorts. To get to it, you go over a short bridge onto a dirt road. Vit's home is only 5 months old, and is so open. He has 2 daughters, around 18 and 25, and a son, Ben, who was around 8. Vit and his wife do not speak much english, but the daughters can help you with some basic english. Honestly, English wasn't needed much, I must have said "Thank You!" a thousand times to Vit's wife, who is amazing. She makes you breakfast with a smile, and just when you thought you were done, she brings out fresh fruit in a cute design. You have options for breakfast, we eat baguettes with eggs and coffee. Perfect way to start your day. The banana pancake is really good as well!
Our room was huge! It had a comfy bed, a desk, drawers, a closet, and a bathroom.
They usually keep large water bottles in the fridge, they'll charge you at the end of your trip. Much easier than running out to the store every time you get thirsty.
Outside of the room, there is another small room, which leads to balcony overlooking the area.
Bike rental is free, and it's $6USD/day to rent a motorbike from Vit. It's the best way to do day trips, such as the Marble Mountains & Da Nang.
We were lucky enough to be in Hoi An during Tet, so Vit's wife was cooking up a storm.
As others have said, it's an easy bike ride into town, and about 15 minutes to the beach. The mother will leave fresh towels for you if she knows your going to the beach.
On our last day, we were silly enough to think that we could get a train ticket to Hue during the Tet season. We were scrambling to find bus tickets, when the mother makes a single phone call, and bam, we have bus tickets. They drove us to the bus stop since there were not many cabs around.
I could go on forever. Vit and his family are amazing people. It was so sad to leave them. Make sure to request them as your homestay family!

Room Tip: Ask for Vit's house!

loved being here!
the family was super nice without being too annoying/friendly. room was clean, had everything we needed (although the wifi signal could have been better..)
distance to the city was great: only 5 minutes by bike, yet not too close so you can have a break from all those crowds. beach is 3km away nd very easy to find.

breakfast was superb as well. (ask for some mixed fruits that aren't on the menue and they'll still make it for you!)

the family knows only little english, so don't expect them to tell you any stories.

Although a bit out of the city centre, this is a great place to return to after a busy day in touristy hoi an. Lovely family, small but clean rooms with fan, ac and mosquito net. Good showers. The breakfast is good but stick to local, the pancake was so-so. However the people are very nice and with little english they make this your home away from home. Bicycles arenincluded which is great in hoi an amd surroundings!
