The cooking class we did at Lantern Town with chef Son was one of the highlights of our trip to Vietnam. Son showed us how to make crispy spring rolls, sweet and sour soup, fish cooked in banana leaf and green papaya salad. He was a wonderful teacher, very generous with sharing both general cooking tips and his knowledge of Vietnamese cuisine, and his English was excellent.
After a couple of hours of cooking instruction we then enjoyed the dishes we had cooked as lunch. The spring rolls, made with high-quality, lean minced pork, were among the best we had in Vietnam. The sweet and sour soup was perfectly balanced and the green papaya salad cool and crunchy. We received copies of all the recipes we'd made so that we can replicate these dishes at home.
We also enjoyed a dinner at Lantern Town. We were there during Earth Hour and the staff lit the room with candles for the event. Food and cocktails were both great.

We chose Lantern Town because it was raining. When we got there it was the height of happy hour, and we were tempted to join in. However, we had wanted to eat as well, and feared that the food would be a poor accompaniment to the drink. In fact, we ate really well here, with some delicious local starters (I recommend the local spring rolls), followed by huge bowls of local noodles. The price was good too, at about $30 for three, including happy hour drinks. Check it out.

We ordered two Vietnamese dishes, a fish and a chicken. Both were excellent. We sat on the first floor balcony, the view of the ricer was terrific and the decor inside was also good.

The staff was also patient and polite.

Ambience was magnificent. We sat out on the top deck outside. 6 adults and 5 kids aged 6-14.
We took our own wine. Corkage was VND100 per bottle. Fair enough. They actually had a half reasonable wine list.
Meals were ok. Shrimp & porm salad was very nice. Wantons ok. Vermicelli spring rolls magnificent. Lemongrass and chilli chicken excellent. Pork ribs & tamarind was terrible. Flavourless and pork was tough as old boots. Horrible. Chicken and lemon leaves was quite good. Red wine beef tough. Kids fish and chips very battery. Coconut milkshake beautiful according to the kids. Stuffed squid good but extremely rich and way too salty.
Cost was VND2.6m for 6 adults 5 kids inc a few beers, we took our own wine.
Overall wasn't bad but we wouldn't go back. You can do much better in Hoi An for the price - this is quite expensive. Try Secret Garden for comparison for similar or less money than this, ambience better food better in our experience.

Had the most delicious Vietnamese style squid and noodles for my evening meal, hot, fresh and delicious. Lantern Town Restaurant was so good we went back the next day for a very cold beer and Prawn and Noodle soup for lunch. Highly recommend Lantern Town for any one visiting Hoi An and an added bonus is no motor cycles in the evening in the Ancient Quarter. A charming place to be. Don't miss!!
