“good food, super cause and you might even get a great story!”
Reviewed October 20, 2013

Our evening at White Lotus started off as the quest for a nice, quiet dinner and ended with the experience of great food and some amazing stories. We found food in Hoi An to be generally very good but the stories we tell when we get home are not usually from the butcher paper type restaurants...it's usually the gems we find down back alleys or the personalities behind the scenes that make for the tapestry of life's great stories that we re-tell.

We stayed at Anantara Resort which is fantastic but we also wanted to venture out a bit too. A few too many Leffe beers at the Riverside Bar at Anantara meant our inclination to head back into old Hoi An was somewhat diminished, so we stayed local. White Lotus, only metres away, greets you with big "Trip Advisor" illuminated signs that, to be honest. after a few days of haggling in the local markets, might ring the warning bells...but there is nothing to worry about the legitimacy of the Trip Advisory award here. We were greeted by Thuy and she proved to be a lovely host and quite funny too! We ordered a range of the typical Vietnamese spring rolls, dumplings and salads. Clean, crisp and flavoursome with lots of mint, basil and chilli. The service was attentive but not overpowering and the food fabulous.

Behinds the scenes is a gentle but laconic Australian who is only too happy to tell some stories about the region if prompted. But if not prompted, you'd never know he was there. The restaurant fronts as an opportunity to provide locals with training in hospitality plus fundraising for local projects in both Vietnam and Cambodia.

We will definitely be eating there again and I would recommend you stop by and savour the fabulous local food and have a chat with the staff and hopefully get the opportunity of taking a story home!

“Fantastic food!”
Reviewed October 18, 2013 via mobile

Not only are you supporting a good cause by dining here but you will also be treated to a fantastic meal and great service! I ordered water spinach and garlic which was massive and came with a large side of rice. Just as I was leaving the table next to me got their food which looked equally delicious. You'd be missing out of you don't eat here during your time in Hoi An!

“We cooked our own”
Reviewed October 16, 2013

We had been planning to do a cooking class whilst in Hoi an but hadn't decided on one. I went for a hair cut one morning and discovered a private cooking class involving one couple under way in White Rose across the road. I asked the participants how they were enjoying it? The man said that he was a trained chef and he was having a great experience. So, I booked for the next day on the spot.
It turned out to be a brilliant decision.
We turned up the next morning and were greeted by a charming young lady who took us on a very comprehensive tour of the nearby market, explaining lots of things and answering all of our questions. She was very impressed by our ability to haggle the prices down. We had had lots of practice in Saigon.
Back at the restaurant we were introduced to the young chef who guided us as we personally prepared 3 dishes. If I don't mind saying so, the food was great. We even learnt the art of food decoration. There was just the two of us, so we were treated to virtually one on one instruction.
This whole 4 and half hour experience cost $20 each. If that's not value, I don't know what is.
We highly recommend this experience.

“Best meal in Hoi An... and a charity!!!!”
Reviewed October 13, 2013 via mobile

Our dinner at the White Lotus was not only our best in Hoi An, but the best in our 9 days in Vietnam. My husband raved about the pork, and I, a vegetarian, found the tofu and vegetable rice delicious.

A huge added value is that the White Lotus directs all profits to Project Indochina, a secular, nonprofit charity providing education, housing, clean water, sanitation, health care and income generation opportunities to needy communities in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

Eat exceptionally well while supporting great projects by dining at the White Lotus.
