When you are done with shopping, here is the perfect alternative for spending time in Hoi An. The tour run by Lifestart is a rewarding experience where you learn to paint a traditional Vietnamese greeting card and make a small lantern.
The painting class is held at the artist's home, a short boat ride across the river. Here you will be taught step by step how to paint a greeting card using traditional themes. Not an artist myself I was surprised at the quality of the card I painted, owing much to the skill and artistic talents of our teacher, the entertaining Mr Singh.
Back across the river to the Lifestart workshop where the 'strict' Ms Dung instructed us on the techniques required to produce a beautiful lantern. Both of our teachers were friendly and spoke good English and provided a very happy learning environment. We were able to meet some of the wonderful and inspiring people who work making crafts for the workshop and were able to browse the goods for sale in the shop, all of the profit going back to the maker.
All in all, an excellent activity and an interesting way to engage with local Vietnamese people.

A great shop that helps disadvantaged people become self sufficient. We loved our purchases from here and much prefer spending our money supporting causes like this. The staff were lovely and not in your face pressuring you to buy things. We wish we had more time so we could have done the painting class and the lantern making class.

Read about Lifestart on tripadvisor and thought it would be worth a look. We bought a beautiful hand made scarf and a few greeting cards. All the handicrafts were very good quality and reasonably priced. It was nice to know that our tourist dollar would go to people that would appreciate the help.

We were introduced to this Foundation by a friend from Australia who is on the board of LightStart and wanted to see first had what they do. We visited the shop and met some of the inspiring people who work here. All the merchandise they make is for sale and the precedes go directly to the person who made the item. The people were lovely and their stories were heartbreaking. The foundation also runs a rehab centre and school and is always helping the local people who genuinely need a helping hand. Please, when you are in Hoi An visit the shop and buy your mementoes form here. You can even do a class to make the beautiful lanterns that you see everywhere.

The painting class with artist Sinh at his house was really fun, and the lantern-making class with Phuong back at Lifestart was a good opportunity to chat and meet the makers as well. An afternoon well spent!
