“Great place, pity about the staff”
Reviewed May 23, 2013 via mobile

The hostel is rather cool, although it's totally a party hostel. The pool was a blessing given how hot Hoi An was.

The main problem I had was the staff. When I checked in, I asked a lady at the reception for a towel. She said its on the bed. So I went back to check and it wasn't there. So I went to tell her that, and she said its in the toilet. Which it wasn't. So I went back to her again, and she asked in a rather accusing tone whether I checked. Fortunately a slightly older woman (I think the owner) came and asked what's the issue. Then she took the towels out from under the receptionist's table. Seriously.

The other staff were ok, but just this initial encounter spoilt my first impression totally.

The driver (his name is Long I think) was really nice and funny though. Made the drive more entertaining.

We stayed in sunflower for ten nights. We enjoyed the pool and the breakfast. Overall the food is really good and the air con in the rooms works great. Downsides....you have to ask to have hot water which no one tells you about so 6 nights in I only discover this, it's really noisey at night even when we changed to a private room and then on the last day they charged me 30$ for a 20$ journey. That's a disgraceful mark up. For example it's 5$ to get to hue with any agency.....sunflower charges 8$, to get to hanoi it should be between 18-22$ but try charge 30$. We stayed so long as we met in with a good group of people but wouldn't stay again

The first thing that strikes you when you arrive at this hotel is how welcoming and friendly the reception staff are. They are prompt and get you into your room after a long journey, with none of my questions or requests seen as troublesome. Just set the tone for the good mood that I had in Hoi An. Helpful tips on tailoring and tours (I took tour to My Son temple ruins and it was just as described and the guide was knowledgable).
Then in the morning the cleaning staff were all smiles with genuine pleasant greetings. Great to start the day. Then downstairs for the included buffet breakfast. What a choice! Pancakes, eggs, rice dishes, noodle dishes, a couple of different vegetarian options, even spaghetti carbonara, not to mention all the fruit, coffee and juices. Again the staff in the restaurant were really obliging. I ended up trying quite a few speciality Hoi An dishes during the day too!!
Jump on a bicycle for the 1km ride to the historic old town. I rented it for a dollar a day just at the front door of the hotel and cruised around happily for four days including the 3km ride to the beach a couple of mornings.
The middle of the day was pretty hot so the swimming pool was great and plenty of shaded areas for reading or playing pool in the bar. Cheap beers on the sunbeds too!
My room was pretty basic but i did opt for the cheapest one so it was as expected and it was cleaned and the bed changed everyday, hot shower with a new towel everyday. Great value. Justt can't recommend this hotel enough. It made my visit to Hoi An such a delight and it will make yours too.

Stay seven nights. Problem with first room totally failed to match description, promptly change to better room but still only half the size of description. Breakfast was very good, well managed. Daily cleaning needs to be improved by wet moping floors to remove grit. I paid the bill the day before checkout because of an early morning start, obtained a signed receipt. Within hours of our departure we we received emails from both the booking agent and the hotel saying that we had left without paying! The hotel asked me to email them the name of our next hotel so that they could send someone to demand their money! When I emailed them the receipt number they tried to back peddle and blame a member of staff, they assured me that they would contact the booking agent and inform them of their mistake. Five days have passed and they still have not done so. Make up your own mind about staying at this hotel.

This hotel is more run like a hostel. The rooms are clean and there's a nice outdoor bar/pool/patio area to hang out at and meet fellow travelers. Be prepared to be staying somewhat out of town. There's a nice man who rents motorbikes outside of the hotel for $5 a day and it came in very handy when traveling into town or to the beach which is also a decent amount away. Service is average and the staff could work on their hospitality skills, but not enough to ruin your stay. They also have a $15 shuttle that can take you to/from the bus station, train station, or airport in nearby Da Nang. Overall, the Sunflower Hotel is a good choice to base yourself while staying in Hoi An.

Good rooms (Stayed in a private room which was really good value). Great breakfast with more choice than you can want, nice swimming pool and a bar area that everyone goes and has a drink. Is a great place to meet people, location is good as well. The staff are very friendly and help you book any buses etc.

The hotel itself is pretty good - it's clean, has a bar and pool, and is good value. The downsides are that it is a fair trek into town, around 15 minutes at a brisk pace, and that it seems to be overpopulated with young backpackers who monopolise the pool area and loungers from early in the day. If you're 18-25 and looking for people to party with, then I'd highly recommend it, otherwise you should perhaps venture elsewhere.
