He came, he saw, he stayed and this is how it went down....

After a week of chaos and fun in Saigon, um - Ho Chi Min City, it was a great relief to take some well earned time out and slow the pace down a little in historic Hoi An, which is a 45 minute cab ride from Da Nang Airport. From there it was off to the secluded countryside of Cam Thanh where a wonderful little 5 room retreat that goes by the name of Villa Hoa Su - Frangipani Village Resort is located.

While Villa Hoa Su is just a short trip away from Hoi An as well as Cua Dai Beach, getting there is part of the fun, with the need to navigate a host of dirt tracks and lush farming land that trails the Co Co river. This is where you will be guaranteed to encounter all sorts of wild life including several large water buffalo before you finally make it to the resort.

Once you get there you will be struck by how tranquil and beautiful the grounds are, with the main feature being an over water pagoda that is surrounded by the main pool and a lily pond, full of catfish and giant koi. Of course it is called Frangipani for a reason, they are scattered everywhere throughout the property adding to the sense of peacefulness that this little resort offers over almost anywhere else in Hoi An.

The staff are exceptionally friendly and really try to be as helpful as they can but it's here that the 3 stars start to become apparent. Essentially, this is not a well oiled machine with slick service staff, fully trained to luxury hotel standards, but more like a quaint and humble family run home-stay. It's best think of it as a deluxe B&B, which is actually fine as long as that is what you're expecting. What this means is that you'll probably find yourself being a little more self directed during your stay and taking care of things as you need as opposed to having everything done for you at you beck and call like you would at a 5 star destination.

The resort offers free bikes to ride into Hoi An which is great, you could also hire a scooter from the town and ride it back and keep it at the resort, either way this offers some great little journey's to and fro, which are definitely best undertaken in daylight hours as it gets very dark at night trying to navigate the little lane ways.

There's no doubt that this charming and intimate destination will offer you a memorable stay and you'll make the most of it you're able to look past some of niggling flaws in attention to detail and aren't expecting high end service. What will win you over is the calming and secluded nature of the captivating surrounds that transport you to place of inner peace and harmony when compared to the hustle and bustle of the city and for this reason Villa Hoa Su is must vist when in Hoi An.

This villa is very nice, swimming pool is amazing and location is great. The only problem that I had with this was the beds and food. The bed is a little uncomfortable and the pillows aren't extremely soft. The food was nice but sometimes it was a little bit overcooked. Otherwise everything was nice. It is lovely how there is not too much noise around and how there is a nice pond in front of the pool and villa.

Room Tip: Rooms on the bottom floor have a glorious view

Villa Hoa Su is such a beautiful place. There were many things that I loved about it. The pool was very nice and warm. I had an amazing time swimming. The rooms are quite basic though, with limited items in it. The rooms had complimentary water and toothbrushes and toothpaste in it which I found quite helpful as I would be going out all day. There were some bad things about the villa and the rooms itself though -

1) The air con was very loud. I found it very hard to sleep because the sound was distracting me. The air con works perfectly fine though.

2) The bathroom was very smelly. It was actually quite disgusting to go to the toilet because the smell put me off. I would put air refreshener inside so that the smell would be blocked out with a nicer one.

3) The food tasted bad. For the first morning that I was there I ordered a sunny side fried egg. The egg was OK but towards the end it started tasting bitter. I also tried a pancake the next day which also tasted OK. The staff were very helpful though as they told me that the gas had run out and I would have to wait 5 minutes for it to come back on so that they could cook the pancake.

4) The shower had low pressure so it took a while to completely wash myself. It was hard to wash off the shampoo. The hot water came very quickly which was nice as in the last hotel it took an age for it to come.

There were many good things about the hotel too -

1) The staff were kind and helpful when taking in my baggage and calling taxis

2) It is a convenient, tranquil area which is a 10 minute drive away from the ancient heritage town.

3) Hoa Su is a beautiful looking hotel.

We stayed here 3 years ago and did not hesitate to return for a week in November 2016. It is still a lovely place with great pool, nice rooms, good air con and wifi and superb gardens but honestly needing an upgrade and deep clean.
For most of our stay we were the only guests and it felt like low season staffing. The front of house young lady was pleasant enough but had few skills related to making a good impression to guests. Her dogs had free range everywhere including our room when it was being cleaned! Generally she was glued to her iPhone screen.
Minh was superb, however, and he made a point of asking about our stay and helping to organise trips etc. He is a gem of an employee and a credit to the hotel.
Breakfast was OK but no fresh fruit was offered which is uniquely rare in SE Asia.
Our room showed signs of wear and tear with stained couch and lots of dust behind doors in the toilet and shower.
I things things would have improved during high season.
This is a really, really nice hotel and a pleasure to visit. We would not allow the glitches to spoil our stay but hope for an improvement for future guests.
We would very probably visit again but would be more assertive regarding cleanliness etc

Room Tip: All ground floor rooms are the same with nice seating area
