Located on the corner of a street, at the start of the produce market in Hoi An, this guesthouse was a great find and an unbelievable value. The guesthouse is hundreds of years old and had a very unique and traditional feel to it. If you are looking for modern or a standard run-of-the-mill hotel, then this place is not for you, however if you want a place that is full of ambiance and one of a kind, this is your place.

The upstairs room was aboslutely wonderful if not only for the fantastic view of the street below and market. I sat with a beer from the open room and watched my wife have dresses made from a tailor across the street. There was plenty of room and it also had it's own wash basin, although toilet and shower are still on the first floor. You will hear street noise from time to time, and early morning going-ons, but it adds to the atmosphere. I wouldn't recommend it though if you need absolute silence to sleep, but for a stay of 3 or so days it was a worthwhile experience.

The furnishings are old and the bathrooms are not ensuite, but what can one expect in a guesthouse that actually is an old home? Linens were clean and the place was well kept within reason. You couldn't take a white glove to every corner, but it was comfortable all the same.

There is no restraunt/kitchen on site, but the location of the place is right at the morning/day produce market and only a short walk away from all of the great restraunts Hoi An has to offer. The hostess was helpful in procuring bicycles one day for a 3-4 km ride to the beach, and a motorbike another day to explore the surrounding areas.

We will return to Hoi An in the future, and we will definitely stay at Minh A Ancient House for a few days, and possibly a more luxurious/pampering place afterward to get the best of both worlds in this very special town.

Minh A is a budget traveler's best friend. For 10USD a night, I got a decently sized room on the first floor, with the cutest little balcony. For Hoi An, which is an old french colony, the lodge itself is a place of visit. The architecture, decorations, furniture-all reflect the charm of yesteryears. Some of the artifacts are for sale as well. It is in the middle of all the action, the market, the river, and the shopping area.
The lodge had clean sheets, hot water, and 24hr check-in. While the bathroom was not ensuite, I dont remember it being a shared facility. Just not ensuite.
The place was full of backpackers when I visited, giving it the lively touch. The innkeeper was helpful when needed, especially with my ticket reservations. Bicycles, the only mode of transport in the town, were also availble for hire here.

All in all, a great place to stay, even if it means you spend less for it! Recommend advance booking as the place is usually overbooked.

Don't stay here. You can get much better value for money elsewhere. Yes, the house is old but so are all the houses in Hoi An. They will tell you have a private bathroom but they don't tell you that it's not attached, it's down the hall and you have to across the main hall and anyone there. And as it is not locked anyone can (and does) use your bathroom/shower. Not only are the walls paper thin, they aren't actually walls. They are dividers, so don't expect any privacy. The downstairs "room" is a bed in the corner and a couple of dividers meant to give you privacy, which it doesn't.

Having stayed just out of town on our first night in Hoi An we moved to this delightful little guest house for our second night. We weren't disappointed with any aspect of this 200 year old house, from the rooms to the location to the brilliant family who run the guesthouse and adjoining shop.

We stayed upstairs, overlooking the central market, in big room with two big comfortable beds. Downstairs there was a lovely courtyard with peaceful garden and a nice selection of books. The traffic through the market provided a fantastic backing soundtrack during the day, while it was surprisingly quiet in the evening.

The location was outstanding, however the service and attention to detail of our hosts was even better. In the morning they ducked insisted on taking our order then going to the market (next door) to buy everything fresh, helped improve our dire vietnamese language skills, and gave us advice on all the bus companies - without any pressure to sell.

All up a wonderful place, perfectly located, well priced and with unbelievable service.
