“LOCATION IS AMAZING”
Reviewed October 4, 2011

Its a nice hotel, 3 minute walk to Registan. There are all sorts of rooms here, as its a converted house. I stayed in the biggest one, which was huge, and cool retro furniture. But the bed was very short. (I also never get that in many countries, they leave the sheet folded and you have to do something with it, and its never big enough to cover you, so once you roll over you are fighting with the coveres) Its a family run place with grandma, her son and granddaughter. There is no wi-fi, but a computer is available. The breakfast was more than adequate.

Walking off the main road to get to this hotel it looks a bit of a dodgy area, but actually the whole town is really very safe and once you get inside the Hotel Zarina the place is very well-kept. The courtyard is pretty with plenty of shady seating and a shallow pool. The staff were helpful, although a couple of rooms occupied by our party had one thing or another wrong with them - overhead light not working, etc. I wouldn't leave valuables in the room, though, as the hotel require that you leave your key with them when you go out (they apparently have no copies for chambermaids to get in with) and the keys just hang on a board in the entry corridor, which might not be attended 100% of the time. They provide safe deposit and money change services at reception.

The central location - five minutes from the famous Registan square - is definitely the main quality of this hotel. On the other hand, please note that Hotel Zarina is hidden between rather uninspiring flats, that were probably erected under Khrushchev. Centrally located, but not in a nice neighbourhood.

The staff speaks hardly no English. Its French is better (though not fluent).

We (two friends) stayed for two nights in room number 11. The furniture simply consisted out of two small beds, a lamp and one chair (and a repulsive wallpaper with glitters). Besides a lack of furniture, the room also lacked anything resembling style.

Our bathroom litterally was 1 square meter in size, with the shower conveniently (NOT) located above the toilet. The towels and the bed linnen seemed rather clean, altough hopelessly outdated.

Furthermore our room door did not close properly, unless it was locked. Since my friend became sick, i had to wake him up to unlock the door when I returned in the evening.

In addition: the water of the - tiny (!) - swimming pool was dirty to such an extent that we did not take a dive. Breakfast was poor.

In conclusion: do not stay here. You can get better value for money (for instance at the brand new and nearby Malika Prime, which we also visited).

Good luck and best regards

Liked: location (town central), great view of the Guri Amir mausoleum from my room.

Disliked: value for money. EUR40 for a single room at the end of the season, with no telephone or TV (and an iffy smell from the plumbing) was overpriced.

Also disliked: the sudden demand for full payment after 1 night of a 2-night stay, delivered not very politely. But that happened in Bukhara too, so it might be an Uzbek thing; or possibly I just look like a bill-skipper.

The hotel has an excellent location, two minutes from the Registan square.
In July (over 40 ºC) it was nice to have a pool to refresh, even if it was very very tinny.
Our room was quite small, but ok (even if they didn't clean properly the room daily).
But it's a pitty that they only offer a good service when there is a group of tourists in the hotel. For independent travelers they don't do the same effort. Everything was ok, but as soon as the group left, the breakfast became very poor, the pool wasn't clean, with the laundry hanging around and we felt a bit like we were strangers in a private house.
