On this very first trip to Uzbekistan, we were very lucky to have found a very great tour service called Advantour, who made all the arrangements for us in the 4 cities that we visited (Tashkent, Khiva, Bukhara, Samarkand). The hotels chosen for us were all in ideal locations, and the same is true with Asia Samarkand Hotel. Its location on Kosh Hauz Street is a short walking distance to some of the important sites in this fabled city - Registan Square which contains the three most important and famous Madrassahs: Ulug Beg, Shir Dor, and Tillya Kar and also Chorsu, the domed 18th century bazaar; Bibi Khanum Mosque and Mausoleum, and also the bazaar. The room is quite large and the bathroom is very spacious as well. There is a grand sitting room in the center of the second floor where one can more readily access the wi-fi, which is rather weak inside the bedroom. The air-con was also rather weak for this time of the year. But the room is very clean and the cleaning staff of local women in the traditional Samarkand dresses was always a reliable bunch. There is a big dining room in the ground floor where breakfast is served, nothing exciting, but offers some variety. Dinner is also served at the same place, but it is buffet dinner only; not wanting anything heavy, we opted to walk back to the Registan Square area where we found a good enough restaurant. On our last day, the water had disappeared from the taps. But I believe this has more to do with the grand music festival that the whole city was preparing for to be held in Registan Square. The President was expected to attend and I think all the power and resources were being channeled there.
