“Lack of English spoken by front desk staff was surprising”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 20, 2012

I was here for a meeting.
It is an arduous journey from Montevideo, particularly after the overnight from Miami.
There was no help with luggage and no-one on reception seemed to speak English (I do not expect this BUT it is a Sheraton, and supposed to be 5* and a resort).
The setting is delightful and the hotel lay-out was very pleasant.
I enjoyed the ambiance in the bar, and the bar food was very good. The vegetarian choice for dinner and breakfast in the restaurant was laughable.
For business the room was comfortable, internet (cost extra) worked well, and the business centre was good for printing etc.

Stayed 3 days at Sheraton Colonia. A quiet and beautiful location by the sea and next to its golf course. Liked the design of the building, landscaping and the use natural materials, rocks and wood.

Location definately required a rented car to easily move around, which we did have.

The rooms were spacious and wellpointed. WI-FI in the room (at extra cost), huge LCD-TV.

Was disappointed with the service. No doorman to bring up our luggage or show the room.
The breakfast was ok, but not upto the usual Sheraton standards. We were (two times) real early birds, with hardly anyone in the restaurant, but still didn´t get any service. Had to look for a coffee or a refill. Quite limited offerings on the buffet (only scrambled eggs, no sausages etc.)

I missed half a day of my short stay by waiting for a phonecall (in my room) which the front desk never connected. Very few of the staff were able to communicate in English, which I found amazing for a 5 star (international) hotel.

But overall it is a nice hotel, with a peacefull location and good size rooms. Next time, I would rather stay in one of the boutique hotels at the historical centre. Anyway, the ocean water in Colonia is not really very attempting to swim (brown color). But Colonia itself is really worth a visit, and to return.

Overall it is a very good hotel. The rooms were very nice and the view of the water and the pools were excellent. The pool area is great and is a great area for kids. The check-in proceedure did not go very smooth but the rest of the staff was very nice. We did eat a meal in the hotel restaurant and had a wonderful Uruguay wine with an excellent pasta and steak meal. Our waiter Raul was wonderful, some of best service we've had in the 2 months we've lived in this area. A nice hotel for families and I would come back.

We spent 3 nights during Xmas. We have been at this hotel before but felt that it is not what it used to be. For example, at the swimming pool nobody came to bring towels, or ask if you needed something, you had to find them, even to order drinks. I asked for an umbrella, it never arrived. The same happened in the room, when I asked for help with the TV which was not working properly, the maintenance person never arrived - my husband finally could fix it. The windows of the room were dirty, also the glass table. The Xmas Eve party was OK, the menu was considered poor at our table of 8. And last, but not least, when I confirmed our attendance at the Xmas dinner, the price quoted was USD 110 per person. On the bill it was USD130. s When I complained the cashier told me that they could only correct it if I presented the corresponding e-mail - which of course I did not have with me.

It's a lovely property & the rooms are great, but as other reviewers have mentioned, it is far from the town's historic center (7 kms or USD 10 one way), and cabs are slow to arrive, if at all. We wasted well over 30 mins waiting for one in the middle of the day. I noticed that most of the guests were families, so this is most likely a spa+resort retreat for those who can afford in the area. If that's your goal, this is great, since the location, property, etc. do that purpose justice. However, be forewarned that the food at this hotel is sub-par, at best (and expensive, to boot!). Front desk staff is polite and helpful to a fault, BUT in person. We tried to call from our room to ask for something 3 times, and each time, the phone just rang and rang (this was not an unreasonable hour, by anyone's standards).

This is a very charming property near Colonia, Uruguay. Check in was a breeze and the staff immediately made me feel welcome. The manager came out to welcome us, and the staff all had smiles on their faces. Rooms are lovely. Beautiful thick wooden doors lead into large rooms. Mine had a beautiful balcony that you could sit out on with comfortable chairs. Very nice view of the property, golf course and the Rio de la Plata. Beds were very nice and the bathroom was top notch. Spa is also wonderful with great treatments and reasonable prices. You really can't go wrong at this hotel. Well done!

This is probably one of the best Sheratons hotel I've stayed, and I've travel a looot! The hotel is beautiful, rooms are big and comfy, greaaaat service, people there are extremely nice (I guess you could say that about people from Colonia in general...)

The pool area is beautiful, and now I wished to go back there during summer to enjoy it... Didn't wake up to have breakfast, so can't talk about it... but the hotel is really big and beautiful, worth staying!!
