“Nice walk”
Reviewed October 5, 2012

Not much to do here but walk around the historical area. I must admitt I did enjoy this. There are plenty of buildings with history and character that take up half a day at least.

“Our portuguese origins”
Reviewed October 4, 2012

A quiet and intriguing place. My family and I spend a wonderful day at Coloia del Sacramento. We got there by Sea Cat, taking the first morning ferry (around 7am), much cheaper than the well-known and traditional Buquebus. It took us 1h30min in an enjoyable ferry trip (There is even a duty free inside- worth it!). Arriving there we got two taxis (we were 5 people) and they decided to hang around with us as it was still very early and everything was closed, going to the farthest places- rambla costenera, Real de San Carlos (the skeleton of an old leisure centre), the city's small harbour and finally the old town. The drivers were extremely friendly and patient, stopping wherever we wanted for beautiful pictures. We spent around 1 hour together and paid less than 100 reais each (= 50 dollars. BTW, they accept REAIS, Brazilian currency- very valuable there). The old city itself is beautiful, there are amazing trees at Plaza Mayor full of parrots singing the whole day long. Visit the Portón de Campo, the city's entrance "door" (BTW there is a turist info center and cool shops selling the best dulce de leche in town next to it), the lighthouse (you get a full overview of the city) and the Matriz Church (the oldest in Uruguay, simple but nice, rebuilt endless times). We had lunch at Meson de la Plaza (near Matriz Church), with live music, the traditional Uruguayan barbecue and pleasant atmosphere. Visit the city with no hurry, so take the last afternoon ferry at around 5pm, you will have plenty of time to visit everything calmly.

“Interesting Place- Marred |By Poor Organisation for English Speaking Tourists”
Reviewed September 3, 2012

Lovely town -but our 'organised tour' was a disaster- left to our own devices most of the time, almost no English spoken on our designated tour bus (despite English being advised and requested on booking). Not enough time in the town due to ferry boking by agent; lunch as part of tour was a disgrace.Did eventually get a brief 20 min tour of Colonia Barrio Historico in English , for 20 mins. Really need to improve the tourist experience.

“Historic Colonia”
Reviewed August 12, 2012

We loved walking around the historic part of Colonia and met some very friendly people doing so. Seeing the oldest part of Uruguay with it's old buildings was very interesting as it differs very much from what you see elsewhere in Uruguay.
