I am so pleased that we booked the wine experience. Without it we would not have had such a great introduction to Uruguay and to wines of the region - particularly the Tannat, which we were not familiar with before.
We booked in advance and Ryan was very professional. He picked us out at the ferry terminal so we didn't have a moment to worry before we were driven through the beautiful countryside to Carmelo, with Ryan telling us entertaining stories and interesting things about Uruguay.
When we arrived at the Irurtia winery Ryan taught us about the wine making process and the owner came and poured us a welcome glass of wine which we drank as we wandered around the vineyards on a crisp, sunny day - bliss. When it came to our tasting the owner was very enthusiastic and generous meaning we got to sample a few unexpected wines too - the hospitality was fantastic! They were so delicious that I couldn't help buying a bottle to take home (although it was hard to choose which one!).
The second part of the tour was just as special. We enjoyed another wine tasting at Narbona winery, including an extremely tasty and memorable Pinot Noir (as you can tell we are not wine experts we just enjoy good wine!) This was followed by a delicious lunch and more of Ryan's good company.
After a fantastic day Ryan dropped us back in Colonia where we had another couple of hours to explore (all you need really in the small but pretty old town) before getting the ferry back to Buenos Aires.
It cost much more money than I would usually pay for a tour but I didn't want to miss out on the wine region and with everything it included it was worth every penny. To top it all off Ryan took photos throughout the day which he sent to us afterwards to remember it all by.
Thank you Ryan and all the best for the future!
