“Like coming home”
Reviewed December 14, 2011

We decided to spend a night more at this estancia. The pick up from the busstop was perfectly on time. The hospitality from that point to the drop off two days later was simply great. They showed us around when we end up in the living room spending quite some time with an American and Canadian couple. Dinner was also perfect because of the cooking quality and setting. The relaxing music in the background made it all cosy. After the sauna, you could cool down in a cold bad enjoying the bright stars. Cycling to Nueva Helvecia was a fun thing to do allthough the village has less to offer.
If you got some time left between Montevideo and Colonia del Sacramento, spend a night or two at El Galope. It's relaxing!

We are glad to hear you had a nice relaxing time. This winter was cold and we really enjoyed the sauna very much. So nice to go out in the cold stary night and steam like a ghost after a cold spalsh in the pool!! Fondue and red wine by the fire also make winter a wonderful time of the year at El Galope.
Thanks for your comment
Cheers

El Galope is a wonderful place and I felt home the moment I arrived. Monica and Miguel are very welcoming and will serve you the most delicious homemade food and great wine. There are many things to do in and around El Galope: go to the beach, take a horse-ride, bike or simply enjoy the peaceful landscape. I had a lots of fun, relaxed and will definitly return : )!

We spent 2 nights and days at El galope and loved the peaceful friendly atmosphere of the place. The highlight was grilled asado prepared by Miguel and a long hike in the beautiful area.

What a fantastic place and the hosts are a fantastic couple. We spent a few nights here and would have stayed for longer. The scenery and relaxing nature of the place was brilliant but getting to know Monica and Miguel and learn about their life and the history of the region was a real highlight and experience. They are a couple of characters and very friendly! Its only a very small place (8-10 people max?) which means you don’t feel as though you are at a mass produced tourist place and feel more like a guest in someone’s home. If you are after a party hostel – this is not for you.

We went for a bit of an explore around the surrounding area, as well as a bike ride into the surrounding town.
If you head to town don’t forget to ask Miguel about the place (as he claims!) “for the best chivito’s in all of Uruguay”! They were pretty good!

Miguel and Monica are very proud of their horses and rightfully so - these are no lazy old nags for the tourista’s! If you have the chance, go for a horse ride with them. Other than that, we just lazed away swinging in the hammocks and having a few dips (and beers!) in the little pool to cool off in the afternoon heat. A great place to relax for a few days and just soak in the atmosphere.

Also, make sure Miguel cooks asado for you one night – he knows what he’s doing that’s for sure (a real highlight)!

We have spent, between us, over a few years travelling, and without a doubt our stay there will be an experience we won’t forget.

The place is easy to get to. Only an hour by regular bus from Colonia del Sacramento. If you have a chance, go. But make some time to talk and get to know Miguel and Monica. Well worth it.

Oh, and if Miguel offers you some of his mate, just remember not to sit on it for too long – “its not a microphone”!

Hi, this thank you comes late!! Anyway, thank you for the good photos that brought us good memories of the good times spent together. Yes, we stick to mate every morning, but it would be much better with vegemite on bread!!
We shared with guest-friends* a very nice winter by the fireplace with good fondue, red wine and sauna at night.
Now spring is coming and soon we'll have the humming birds again!!
All the best and hope to see you again sometime

El Galope is a great place to go and unwind. We had a very peaceful time. It's inbetween Montevideo and Colonia so perfect for a stopover for a night or a few days. Monica is the perfect host and she really looks after her guests. And great company too.

I would recommend staying more than one night so you can really take in the surroundings and even visit the town and sights around it. You could then do some horse-riding on the other day, really recommmend doing this.

El Galope is out in the middle of nowhere so once you're there, you're there but there is a small town about 3-5km away. I recommend taking some basics with you or even food for your whole stay...they charge for everything there so if you're looking for a budget stay this isn't it. The beer and wine is quite expensive compared to the supermarkets so you could stock up, we even got charged for a small coffee after dinner. Would have been nice if something came complimentary.

El Galope is an amazing experience and my wife and I really enjoyed it. I would defintely go back for some more chill out time. Oh and all the rooms are fanastic, so doesn't really matter which one you choose.

Hi Ben,
Thanks for your positive comments.
I also enjoyed having you and Chris here; nevertheless I was surprised at your comment concerning prices.
It is logical that we are more expensive than a supermarket since EL Galope is not a supermarket. Besides, if you go to a restaurant or any other Estancia they will charge for what you consume. Our rates are even lower than the overage of restaurants and bars and other Estancias in Uruguay.
It is our policy to send our price list by email before arrival. If you check the email we have sent you before arriving you will find it attached.
The fact that we share, feel very close to our guests and enjoy doing it does not mean that we are not going to charge you. This is our job.
I have invited you with coffees when you arrived as we always do, but I really do not remember if you accepted them.
Hope you can come some other time, stay for longer, and bring your own food supplies; this is why we offer kitchen facilities for our guests. We know that people who travel for a long period of time like you need to take care of keeping a low budget.
All the best
Monica

We stayed at El Galope for 3 nights and can't rave about it enough. After living in Buenos Aires for 7 weeks, we were ready for a change of pace, and what better place to do this than the Uruguayan countryside. We read countless positive reviews about El Galope and decided it was not to be missed.

Our days mainly consisted of reading, lazing in the hammocks and hanging out with Tupac (the farm dog). Miguel and Monica also offer horse riding and bike hire to explore the beautiful surrounds. The horses are absolutely fantastic, even for first-time/nervous riders!

The rooms are comfortable and spacious, with crisp sheets and feather down duvets. There is a lounge/kitchen space which provides the perfect homely area for sipping on the organic wine, chowing down on the asado or tasting the fondue - which is highly recommended. It is possible to make your own meals (only between 12-3pm) but it's better to treat yourself to the homemade meals, which are very affordable.

Monica and Miguel are truely amazing hosts. Very genuine and friendly, and having lived and travelled in various parts of the world have some interesting stories to share. El Galope is more than a hostel. They made our time at El Galope very special, and it is evident that they know just what a traveller needs. You won't want to leave. We would highly recommend El Galope to anyone.

Room Tip: All rooms are equally as comfortable, it just depends if you want bunk beds or a double bed.
