“Terrible stay at Los Limoneros”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 30, 2012

We had an awful experience at Los Limoneros, so I can only give it a review that reflects our experience.

1) We got robbed. My girlfriend's brand new shoes were missing when we left. When we called the hotel owner to ask about the shoes, he totally lost his temper and "rudeness" would be an understatement. He insulted and cursed at my girlfriend.

2) The walls are too thin. We could clearly hear what was going on in the room next door.

3) Method of payment did not work. They wouldn't take any of our credit cards despite the fact that they assured us before booking that they would, so we had to drive 20 minutes to an ATM (2 ways). They didn't even give us a receipt.

4) They had a menu and what was actually served to us was 50% of what was offered.

Point #1 was the worst by far. Not only did we get robbed, but also were cursed at. We had a really bad experience at Los Limoneros.

I think I'll find it hard to have a happier moment than arriving at La Casa de los Limoneros with my friends as the sun set over the sea behind this stunning house. Mario and his lovely staff took exceptional care of us, but also let us enjoy our time together in this gorgeous space. Nights were spent chatting in the living room over copious amounts of red wine, cosy between a huge fire and an equally large log burner, and days were spent walking amongst the lemon trees, trying (failing) to burn off a small portion of the delicious meals. A very beautiful place to share with special people. Our thanks to Mario for his hospitality.

I had an amazing weekend here with four girlfriends. The house is simply beautiful, and Mario and the whole staff are incredibly hospitable. The rooms in the house are all totally charming - my favorite was the living room, complete with a big fireplace and an upright piano (which we happily played!). The breakfast spread was divine, and the dinner we ate there was delicious too. This is a magical place! We are all determined to return one day.

Room Tip: The rooms are all wonderful!

We had the most wonderful time. It was 5 girlfriends who all live in big cities so this cozy, peaceful, weekend getaway was literally like a dream. The house oozed with charm. Every room had a fireplace with a roaring fire. (It was winter). Mario, the owner, and his staff are very kind. They made us a scrumtuous home cooked meal. We did yoga outside by the lemon trees, took a long walk, went horseback riding, played the piano, read our booka, dranks loads of wine, and laughed a ton. This is a wonderful place to relax and unwind, and feels like home,

My husband and I stayed at Casa de los Limoneros for one night during our honeymoon and, overall, we were a little disappointed with our experience. Although the house and surrounding yard and lemon tree groves are absolutely gorgeous and we thoroughly enjoyed our leisurely afternoon walk around the grounds, playing with the dogs and lounging underneath the the palm umbrellas by the pool, there were quite a few aspects that lowered our overall impression of Casa de los Limoneros. After reading so many great reviews about the hospitality of the owners (Sergio and Mario), we were so excited to meet them and to have one of their "raved about" meals. We knew that it was far out of town from Colonia, therefore, we planned on spending a relaxing night in the countryside, having dinner at the Casa, and touring Colonia the next day (since there is a secure luggage hold in the bus station.) Unfortunately, neither of the owners was there the night we stayed. Although the staff was friendly, they were all a little reserved and hard to find at times. We were a little cold before dinner, so when we finally found them, they were nice enough to start a fire for us in the fireplace in the living room. Also, they did prepare us a dinner, but it was hardly worth the $70 USD we paid for it (two glasses of wine, bread with hummus dip, beet soup, fish and potatoes, and cut-up fruit for dessert). Also, we were quite distracted by the large amount of fruit flies hovering around our food during the meal. The bathroom itself looked very nice, but the shower experience was not. Although the temperature of the water was great, the drain in the tub was completely clogged and took a very long time to drain (not a pleasant experience). If we were ever back in the Colonia area of Uruguay again, I would like to give the Casa de los Limoneros another try because it was such a beautiful house and countryside, but I would insist on asking the owners if they were going to actually be there during my stay and if they have a room with a shower that drains properly.

La Casa de los Limoneros is a great place to stay, the ideal location ... uruguayan country side ("campo"), by the side of the Rio de la Plata, but not ON the Rio de la Plata (it can get too windy), beautiful swimming pool surrounded by ... yes, lemmons.
It is not a must, but i strongly suggest you have a car with you. Exiting the port of Colonia, serious rental companies, will rent you a car for very reasonable prices. I think two blocks up, there is a local Punta Cana rental, where I always got a wonderful car (Golf, Polo) for very reasonable prices, on daily basis, or weekly basis.
Why do I suggest a car? In order to travel to the City of Colonia, visit the Barrio Historico, eat in some wonderful restaurants, and go back to the country side, have breakfast in the morning in the peaceful surrounding.
Now, La Casa de los Limoneros is close to Route # 21 (very good road); if you go north 60 KM, you'll hit Carmelo, a kind of very laid back uruguayan town where you can eat in the meat restaurant in the plaza.
If you go east 5-10 KM, you'll get to Colonia, and from there you can either enjoy the city or travel even more east, via Route # 1, the route to Montevideo. You can turn right in Santa Ana, and eat in the stone built Hotel, you can stop by in Colonia Valdense and drive towards the river. If you get hungry, the restaurant close to the filling station, is excellent, and the prices are very more than reasonable.
Go back to the La casa de los Limoneros ... that should be your base. You can ask Mario or Sergio for a special meal, walking through the gardens is fantastic.
One important piece of information: it is not possible to check this in advance, but in the high summer season, Dec-Jan-Feb, could be hot, but the worse, mosquitos could be a very unpleasant company; they can appear when the sun sets, and make your life miserable.

We ended up at Los Limoneros unexpectedly because of a problem with our reservation at another posada in Colonia, and it turned out to be a lucky mistake for us. Sergio and Mario were extraordinarily gracious hosts, and the setting was beautiful. I loved the sounds and smells of the water garden out back. The nighttime wildlife sounds were soothing, especially after the hustle and bustle of Buenos Aires. The food was also very good. We particularly enjoyed the Saturday night asada. I would definitely recommend Casa de los Limoneros!
