“A must when exploring the Uruguayan countryside.”
Reviewed December 1, 2012

Having covered some great places along random international vacations I gladly share this under-advertised gem in the Uruguayan 'campo'. On route from BA to Jose Ignacio our group found ourselves in the warm embrace of Estancia Finca Piedra. My travel planning tends toward an easy devolution from fast paced to totally chill and this was the absolute perfect transition between our arrival point - busy Buenos Aires and the beautiful beaches of Jose Ignacio. There were two of the four in our travel crew that yearned for the easy pace of a Uruguayan ranch but quickly all of us were soothed by the casual, attentive pace of Finca Piedra. Walk the trails, horse back, bike... Drive from Colonia and arrive in time for a sunset horse ride. PHENOMENAL. Enjoy what this very special place offers - AMAZING food (didn't expect!) and clean accommodations. Introduce yourselves to owners Jason and Sandrine and their well trained staff who will quickly make you feel at home. Be sure to sample their wines which are remarkable - the Syrah and Voignier in particular were delightful surprises of which we bought cases for the Jose Ignacio. If seeking a well-rounded experience in Uruguay I highly recommend this place as a destination. Note: our travel group of Americans and Canadians, The Gadabouts, travel during the American Thanksgiving which is just before the crush of S. American travel in Dec and January. We recommend this time!

We had a rough trip down to South America with two flight cancellations and a long delay on the flight that eventually got us there. Our first day was in BA where it rained all day, so it wasn't the greatest start to a vacation. Then we went to Estancia Finca Piedra and our vacation began!

We stayed two nights and the first night there was only one other couple staying, the second night we were the only ones. It wasn't quite in season for Uruguay yet so things were slow. So, we had a 2500 acre farm with hundreds of cows, sheep and horses all to ourselves!

The staff were exceptionally gracious and helpful. Several spoke English well so it was easy for us to communicate (my Spanish is not so great).

We took advantage of several of the estancia's activities including the horse cart ride, mountain biking, milking the cow, and horseback riding. All were a lot of fun and the grounds are amazingly beautiful.

The food was a little inconsistent, some things were great, and some items left a little to be desired, but nothing was terrible. The estancia has vineyards which produce some fantastic tannat wine.

I'm glad we stayed two nights as I think it would have been difficult to fit all of the activities in with just one night.

Would definitely return!

Room Tip: The estancia is fairly remote and not that easy to get to. You can take a bus and then a taxi, or r...

This estancia is run by a lovely family who is also producing wine on the estancia. Sandrine and Jason were running the estancia while we were there and were vey warm and helpful to arrange activities for our 2 boys ages 12 and 9. The estancia has nice vineyards and is also near a lovely area with large rocks that are really scenic for horse back riding. We chose the American plan which included activates like one horse back ride per day and food. It was great that they accoomdated our family room request and it was not as expensive as 2 standard rooms. traveling as a family can be quite expensive. The food was so good sometimes and a bit of a miss other times. I would recommend plainer grilled foods with less sauce or sauce on the side to help visitors adjust the food more to their liking. The afternoon tea and wine from the estancia were touches. We went fishing one time and the boys loved it. Gear option for families and I would like to go back to the estancia and Uruguay in general.

We had a fantastic stay at Finca Piedra. The service was amazing and nothing was too much trouble for Clemence. We stayed in the room attached to the restaurant which we really enjoyed as it was close and easy. Just outside our room was a fireplace that we sat around to read our books and relax, and the fire also really warmed up our room. There is also a great big fireplace in the restaurant that we sat around in the evenings drinking wine and playing cards.

We had a great time riding the horses and also fishing down by the vineyards. It was so great to be out in the countryside.

We loved staying here, however we did feel that it was a bit overpriced. When it is "all inclusive" we still paid for the nibbles in the evenings that we assumed were included and the tea and coffees that we ordered with our lunch also. Although not overly expensive and we still would have ordered and paid for, we did end up paying more than we expected as when things were offered we just assumed they were included when they were not.

I recommend staying here as it is really relaxing and refreshing to be out in the country. The service was also excellent. Thank you

Last week, I visited Finca Piedra for a day-trip countryside adventure with The Wine Experience and it was extraordinary. From the moment we arrived we were greeted warmly by one of the owners, Jason and taken on a really fun tour of the grounds (it’s a true estancia with real gauchos who take care of all the animals), which included the opportunity to visit the farms with baby rabbits, ostrich, ducks, etc. Coming from the city, it was a really nice relaxing break to be in such gorgeous nature and calmness. After a delicious wine-tasting and Uruguayan BBQ (cooked by their resident gaucho), I went on a horse-back ride through their 1000 hectres of expansive farm and vineyards. The staff were incredibly friendly and even though my mom and I were only there for a day, we were made to feel like family at home. I would recommend Finca Piedra to anyone looking for a true Uruguayan estancia and wine experience in a relaxing and family-like atmosphere.

We spent a couple of nights and will definitely return, hopefully with my grandchildren, since it is a perfect spot for kids too. The owners were extremely attentive to our needs. Food was very good. On our last day a large group came, and were extremely noisy and obnoxious. Clearly that is not the fault of the owners. We enjoyed horseback riding, viewing their many types of grapes, tasting their wines, walking, sunning at the pool and visiting local attractions.

Finca Peirda is worthy of its own stop in Uruguay. We are a family of 4, two adults and children 7 and 10, and we stayed three nights. We loved Finca Pierda. It is a beautiful property where you can ride horses every day and swim in a beautiful pool. Our kids collected eggs from the chickens (that were served at breakfast!!) and milked cows. And the wine is excellent. They make their own wine at Finca Pierda, and they do an excellent job. The food was great, and the hosts, Diego, Jason and the rest of the staff were accomidating and very helpful. But, probably, the most interesting part was meeting the gauchos who lead the horseback riding trips, they are amazing with horses. A stay at finca pierda will be like nothing you have experienced. We could have stayed longer!!
