“Over rated and very expensive”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 9, 2012

Probably the most expensive hostel in the world. Nearly US$100 for a shared room that was dirty, had a discusting bathroom and old 'furniture' and the worlds smallest bed. I would never recommend anyone stay here, its too expensive for the backpackers who could maybe stay in a place this dirty and to dirty for people who can afford to stay here. Only positive were the staff who were friendly and spoke English.

I don't know what possessed the Lonely Planet reviewer that called this hostel "fancy pants", unless they consider dark, moldy hostels full of horrific bugs fancy. Then, this wins five stars. We changed from the six bedroom dorm to the 8 because the 6 was covered in wet clothes and everybody was on top of each other. The 8 bedroom was more spacious, although the bathroom was very dirty. The shoebox kitchen only had three burners working for the entire hostel so there was a line to cook. We woke up absolutely covered in bug bites, more and more of which appeared throughout the day. When I told the receptionist she just asked me what bed and room and didn't act surprised. It wasn't until we came back later in the day, on the way to the doctor with completely swollen bites (specifically centered around my face and neck... disgusting) and holding ice that she finally apologized, told us they were closing the room down to fumigate. We asked for our money back so we could use it to get medicine and she obliged, although the owner just sat next to her silently not even saying hello to us or acknowledging our presence. The only pro to this gross place is the location. If you like living with bugs.

A pretty ok hostel, centrally situated, with free breakfast and a huge collection of good movies. We stayed here in low season, so it felt a bit deserted.

De 4 person dorms had a bathroom, but it the promised warm water turned out to be cold and it was so close to the room that you could literally hear everything people were doing on the toilet. This was really disgusting.

The information we got about a vinyard we wanted to visit was unclear and incomplete. They first send us way to far, and later stood in front of a closed door, so we didn't see any tour, let alone wine.

This hostel could be really cool, but isn't really...

Loved my stay at El Viajero Colonia! I even extended my stay for an extra night there. The staff are awesome--so friendly and helpful. The location is great--walking distance from the bus station and so close to the main part of town. The rooms were spacious and clean, comfortable beds, breakfast was better than most hostels, and the common area is cozy and inviting. Has all the essential: kitchens, computers/wifi, outdoor terrace, bike rentals. And the group events and dinners are awesome!

My wife and I stayed at the B and B for 3 nights in April 2012. The staff here are very polite, friendly and helpful. Our room was located at the top of the building. The room was very large, quiet and spotless. Our breakfast was delicious - simple but nicely presented and fresh with croissants, bread, cheese, fresh fruit juice and cereal. Everything here is run very efficiently and we had no problems whatsoever. We were able to hire bikes from the sister hostel just up the road which was great fun in order to explore further afield. The B and B itself is ideally located in the old town and near all the main restaurants and cafes. I highly recommend staying here.

I stayed in this hostel for just one night but I can recommend it to everyone.
It's situated close to the harbor. If you come with buquebus form Buenos Aires it won't take you longer than five minutes walk to get here. Colonia is a small town so in another few minutes, you're in the centre, close to all of the attractions...
The staff is nice and friendly, you can find many flyers in the reception which is 24/7.
The room was clean, with AC and TV.
Even though my room was directly next to the roof-terrace where other travellers can sit and chat, there was no problem with the noise...
Reasonably priced.
A nice hostel to stay while visiting Colonia.

We were travelling from Buenos Aires to Montevideo and stopped in Colonia for a day. Was a refreshing stop, the hostel was very good and we could relax to continue the trip.
