Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilisation is located on the Corniche (Majarrah Waterfront) of Sharjah which is the closest Emirate to Dubai and only a short (less than half an hour) drive from the Creek area of Dubai. If you are going in a taxi, tell the driver it is on the corniche near the Radission Blu Resort as they may have trouble locating it. We had to be offloaded by a Dubai taxi driver into the hands of a Sharjah driver after getting quite lost.

It is located in a building dating from 1987 (old in these parts) which was a souq and claims to be the first building of its kind in the Gulf region to use traditional Arab-Islamic design elements. I am not sure that this is a claim which would stand up to a contest but it is a welcome cool respite from the summer heat and an interesting structure to look at exhibits of disparate origin but with the commonality that there is some connection to the Islamic world.

History buffs from other parts of the world may question the collection and the worthiness of some pieces to be on display as they are only models or approximations from sketches or descriptions from early Islamic scholars or inventors. It is hard to see what is original dating back to any age beyond the last few hundred years and there are certainly better specimens located in other museums in the world.Notwithstanding that, it is still an interesting visit.

I enjoyed the ground floor section of the museum called the Islamic Faith Gallery which is a good introduction to the faith for beginners and explains the five pillars of the faith, exhibits some old and beautiful copies of the holy Qu'ran and explains the Haj to Mecca very well in picture form.

There is also a current exhibition of some of the work of Owen Jones who the exhibition attributes bringing across Islamic design forms into European architecture and decorations.

Entry to the museum is only five dirhams but if you go on Saturday, entry is free. The much lauded coffee shop in the dome of the building was closed as was the ground floor cafeteria on the Saturday we visited so if you are intending to visit for the day, you may wish to bring your sandwiches and some water in case you find the same situation. Information about the museum is located at the website: www.Islamicmuseum.ae
Openings are Saturday to Thursday 8:00 - 20:00, and Friday 16:00 - 20:00

An excellent centre for educating non-Muslims and Muslims about Islam and Islamic history. No expense has been spared in building this centre. Very educational..

Shame there aren't many signs in the locality to direct you to the centre. The locals are oblivious to where it is!

Some of the inscriptions of the artefacts could have been translated.
