“A gem that just needs a little more polish!!”
Reviewed April 27, 2014 via mobile

I stayed with wife and 2 children (2 & 7) at the W.A in RAK between 8-18th April, having seen a review in Sunday Times travel.
We've been to Dubai a number of times but Atlantis has now got too busy & crowded!
The hotel is very impressive and what you would expect of UAE standard. Huge reception with immaculate furnishings.
Our double queen room was massive with so much room for us all that we did not need to take up the offer to upgrade to a junior suite for £100/night.
Despite being told we couldn't check in until 16.00, we were able to get into room at 10.00 and all staff were very friendly and welcoming.
Overall our stay was fantastic. The hotel, room, pool, beach, gym and all other facilities were first class. No having to get up early to reserve sunbeds like the Atlantis!!
The quality of food at buffet for breakfast and dinner was also excellent.
Our only criticism was lack of really good service around the pool or in restaurant.
Around the pool it was often hard to find any staff to take your order for drinks. Also sometimes staff would say they would get a colleague to come and serve you, only for no one to return. Often quicker to just go to bar yourself which isn't what you expect from 5*. When the staff did serve you, they were lovely and very obliging.
Also there were inconsistencies around the pool. Some days you got complimentary water, cold towels, sun glasses clean, ice lollies, other days nothing!!
In the restaurant at breakfast there was often a lack of glasses for juice. Also the table prep was a bit haphazard!
However, these are in our view minor issues in the overall scheme of things.
Our 7 year old was sick one morning at breakfast and the staff from Lexington Grill were so kind. Gave her water, cold towels and were completely unfazed by the mess. More concerned for her!
This hotel represented excellent VFM and we will definitely consider it again next year. Also our 2 year old loved one of our waiters, Akram, who took her to get ice cream and chocolate lolly's from the amazing Easter display!! He was a star!!

We stayed here just leading up to the Easter weekend. My first impression was that the hotel was very beautiful. Our hire car was taken from us at the hotel entrance and parked for us. This system continued throughout our stay. We had a double queen room with a small corner balcony. The room was very large but I found the lighting system somewhat confusing. It was either very bright or dark. It was difficult to isolate specific lights. The beds were extremely comfortable. There was a separate dressing room and large bathroom. I found the cleanliness of the room fairly good, but I have enjoyed better standards at other hotels in Dubai. The wifi was free in the reception area. We did try to pay for a weeks use in our room but there were incompatibility issues with our Apple products so we never actually managed to do it.

The breakfast buffet offered a good choice of food and I would like to mention Ashish who I found to be especially attentive and efficient. The pool area was large and had wooden cabanas for shade dotted around. On occasion cold flannels, bottles of water and even ice lollies were offered. But this wasn't on a daily basis just on the odd occasion. The beach area was nice but there were a lot of jelly fish in the sea which put me off going in.

The hotel itself is located much further from Dubai than I expected. Because of horrendous roadworks and huge volumes of traffic from Sharjah onwards, getting into Dubai took us 2&1/2 hours. I was expecting an hour. I did feel the area was too deserted and so different compared to the glamour of Dubai that I would not return to this part for that reason. I will stick to the Palm and Jumeirah Beach area in the future because there is so much more on offer there.

Dear sfpSomerset,

Thank you for sharing your valuable review about your recent stay with us at Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah.

We are all very pleased to read that you were impressed in the hotel structure and that you enjoyed your spacious room and other facilities at the hotel.

I have noted your comments regarding the complex lighting system in the room and that the internet did not work on your Apple products. Of course depending on the business of the road, we are generally 50 minutes north of Dubai International Airport.

Thank you once again for sharing your feedback on tripadvisor and thereby giving us the opportunity to enhance our service quality.

Yours sincerely,

We had planned to stay for 3 nights but had to check out early due to an unexpected illness. So our experience is just based on a night and a whole day's stay. We expected a lot seeing all the great reviews. Overall experience was good but certainly did not exceed our expectations. Our room was spacious, food was excellent (especially breakfast), facilities were also very good. The hotel itself is very big with lots of space, so you will never feel like the place is too overcrowded. The staff in general were very attentive and helpful, especially the bell boys and housekeepers. A few minor qualms however - As mentioned by many others, the lighting system in the room was very confusing. They should really have someone explain the system to the guests at the time of check-in. For anyone planning to 'sleep-in' and watch a few movies - bring your own! Only few basic channels were available on the slow and laggy TV system and most of them without any program guide or information. No movies available to rent or buy either as the hotel does not have a video library - as told to us by the front desk. Also surprising that a hotel of this class does not offer free internet. After showing us to our room at the time of check-in, we never heard again from our 'personal assistant'. The greeters at the main entrance seemed selective about who they offer their greetings to.

It's my last night at the Waldorf RAK.. What a total waste of time and money.
For a brand like the Waldorf to have such poor customer service is appalling.
My husband and I checked in yesterday ( 24/04) and we upgraded to a sea view suite.. At check in the lady adviced us that the concierge will tell us a bit about the hotel and what services are available.
He did not want us to bother him and made it seem that he was doing us a favour tv talking to us. Even later on in the evening when we wanted some advise and where and what to eat he just shrugged his shoulders and gave us one liners like we were not welcome.

The staff here are mainly pacific Asians and Egyptians with very poor English.. On our first night we were asked if there was somewhere to eat with a terrace we were shoved to three different restaurants before getting it right.
It is our second night here and besides using the basic amenities like the pool and going to the beach... The hotel staff were extremely and I do mean extremely unhelpful.

Although part of the same parent company the banyan tree seems to be a better hotel.

For UAE standards the Waldorf doesn't do its brand name any justice. Thinking that the name alone will will carry the hotel is silly. Customer service is important.

I even asked the staff about spa treatments and yes you guessed it no help.

This morning at the pool all the catering staff were on a staff meeting at the peak of pool time.
So no one was available to take our food orders.

I won't be coming back here again.. At least we have a late check out tomorrow a little sleep in and we are out .

My husband, two kids and i spent a lovely three days during the Easter break. We had the deluxe room with a balcony and it was wonderfully spacious and luxurious. Fantastic bathroom and walk-in closet. Loved the pool although it was hard to find space unless one got there very early in the morning; the beach water wasn't amazing and too still (no waves at all and not very clear) although we did enjoy banana boating and the other water sports. Great food - we ate at Lexington Grill and Marjan and also enjoyed the food by the pool. Pool staff were gracious and helpful although we found the staff at the pool bar to be most unobliging and the service very slow.
We have visited many hotels in the region and stayed at some amazing hotels. RAK Waldorf Astoria is definitely included in that last. Overall it was a wonderful break and we will be coming again!

Room Tip: With kids definitely get the deluxe room with two queen size beds. Great for a family with two kids...

This resort was fabulous. It may be under stated being out in Ras Al Khaimah 50 mins North of Dubai International Airport but it is a hidden jewel. The grand entrance and lobby was amazing, the staff are extremely friendly and welcoming. Peacock alley was beautiful the best Peacock Alley we have been to at a Waldorf Astoria.

We stayed in a King Junior Suite room, it was huge and had a seperate dressing room which was most welcome. All the furnishings were of a high standard and the room was extremely comfortable. The room colour scheme matched the whole theme of the hotel which was executed perfectly something rarely seen. The balcony was huge with fantastic views of the sea. At night it was so relaxing listening to the waves rolling in. It was very quiet at night, the bed was very comfortable and we had the best 10 nights of refreshing sleep ever. The only 2 complaints i have regarding the room is that turn down food and drinks such as milk if not drank by us would sit there for a couple of days. I eventually had to throw it down the sink as it had turned. The room furnishings were not dusted during our stay and became dusty although the room in general was clean.

The food was very reasonably priced than in Dubai but excellent nonetheless. Breakfast was a buffet and had a huge choice. The restaurant choices in the hotel were very good we especially enjoyed the Japanese restaurant Umi. The Lexington Grill has the best steaks ever and must be tried. The food from the pool was exceptional also.

The staff in general were extremely helpful and attentive. The pool staff were to be commended and always provided an excellent service Marie Car at the pool bar and Daniel at the towel desk particularly excelled.

The beach was lovely and on certain days had some fabulous shells on the shore

Overall it was a fantastic stay, well done to the management and staff for making it a truly memorable stay. We cannot wait to return very soon!

Room Tip: Ocean views are a must
