The Weiner Cafe is situated on Olha Kobylyahska Street in the middle of the historic district. The street is closed off to vehicular traffic and is nice for a summer stroll. This area of Bukovina was occupied by the Austro-Hungarian Empire for almost 150 years, up until the First World War and this is reflected in this restaurant’s theme. There are portraits of Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife Empress Elisabeth, the decor has a variety of antiques situated about and the desserts were scrumptious. We sat on the outdoor patio and ordered tea and variety of desserts which included blueberry and strawberry cheesecake and Napoleons. They were delightful. The menu offered a large variety of dishes and on my next trip back to Chernivtsi this is one restaurant I will be sure to return to.

This small, but stylish restaurant and patisserie could compete for the tag of the best restaurant in Chernivtsi. I never miss it when in town, and surprisingly its food is not getting worse with time. And its service is not getting better either.

Located in the very heart of the Old City, in the middle of Olhy Kobylyans’koi Street, which is open to pedestrians only. There’s no parking nearby, so you have to leave your car on any of the adjacent streets (Chelyuskintsiv or Virmens’ka).

Its interior is somewhat eclectic, on the edge of bad taste, but not without its charm. The premises are not too spacious, so there’s not much privacy for romantic evening except in the niche hidden behind a folding-screen. And still, comfy sofas create very relaxing atmosphere. In summer, an open air terrace is established on Olhy Kobylyans’koi Street – nice spot for people-watching.

Inside the café, the ground floor is a non-smoking and bar area, while the smoking hall stretches along the second floor reachable by narrow stairs.

Don’t be deceived by its name – the menu in Wiener Café can embarrass any first-class restaurant, so extensive and ambitious it is. It occupies a small book (the downside is they don’t have too many copies of it) and offers ample international, largely Mediterranean, cuisine and very few traditional Ukrainian dishes.

Except probably the seafood soup that was delicious, the rest of the dinner entries were rather fine than excellent. Still food was good, rich and in extremely generous servings. And the desserts were absolutely mouthwatering! Definitely worth specifically going for.

Desserts are exhibited in the show-case by the bar, and the bar tender will explain which is what. We were unlucky to catch Cherry Strudel this time; however, all the other desserts were just as perfect – Napoleon, Apple Strudel, Schönbrunn Cake and Cherry Parfait, in particular. Do give them a try.

Full bar, but very limited selection of wines served by glass.

Takeaway is available. Bought some cakes and tarts to take back to Kyiv and paid half as much as in Tsukernya in Lviv for nearly the same assortment.

Service is probably the main weak point here. Done as a huge favour and sort of bossy. The bottles left for the clients to open were perhaps the biggest surprise.

And still, I can't help returning to this stylish cafe for its fabulous desserts and coffee, and inimitable atmosphere. Highly recommended.
