“A wonderful day at the zoo”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

This zoo has some wonderful and a beautiful park like grounds. An easy and enjoyable day. A large variety of animals are present and well maintained.
While we could all hope for animals living in their natural habitat, this zoo presents the species well and is one of the best I have seen in Eastern Europe.
Not to be compared with other zoos in the Americas.
It is a refreshing stop in a bustling city and highly unexpected for its quality and grounds.

“An amazing place to take pictures with family and friends.”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

A zoo that is more that 100 years old. They have a web-page where you can read the story of the zoo. Plenty of nice alleys, tree- and stone-figures. One of the best places to make open-air photo-sessions in Nikolaev.

“Great zoo in Ukranian context”
Reviewed August 17, 2013

Maybe a side note to previous reviewers, is that one shouldn't compare a Western European or U.S. zoo to an Eastern European zoo and have the same expectations, but in Ukranian context the Mykolayiv Zoo is a great zoological garden. The animals are obviously well fed and active, there is a big variety, and the staff seem to try hard to put the means they get to good use and improve the conditions for their animals, while making the the zoo an attractive place for visitors. I've been coming here almost every year for the last 10 years, always enjoyed it and I can honestly say that the zoo was improving with every visit (what in my opinion couldn't be said for the Kyiv Zoo, for example).

So, if you visit Mykolayiv, you should definitely pay a visit to its Zoo, because, let's be honest, there are few other real touristic attractions, plus you'd be supporting the oldest zoological garden of the country - I'm pretty sure the 2 euro one pays for admission won't make you poorer, but could help the place to keep heading in the right direction ;)

“Poor animals”
Reviewed April 1, 2013

In terms of variety of species the Zoo might be the best in Europe. However the conditions are awful. It is hard to enjoy watching animals and in the same time realize how miserable is their existence.

“So sad, so run down ...”
Reviewed March 24, 2013

What a shame that the oldest zoo in the CIS countries has come to this pass. It feels like the post war epoch when all the animals had been eaten. Few animals, mainly in rather smaller areas than we would contemplate in the west; and the whole zoo feels slightly abandoned.

It serves the local people to take their children, if there is nothing else to do, but frankly it is not worth visiting. Shame, Maybe San Diego should step in??
