“Beautiful, Even at -20”
Reviewed April 7, 2014

Visited this place in December 2011-The day after I got married. Even with a throbbing head and freezing temperatures it's worth a visit. Looking forward to return here in Summer 2014.

“Step back in the past and gaze upon the chimneys with the Cossacks”
Reviewed January 14, 2014

This is actually a pretty broad description since the island is large and has more than one sight worth seeing (I believe all are worth your time!). Unfortunately I haven't seen it all. We've been to the museum, the Cossack Sich, a bit around the island paths and in the restaurant. The island itself doesn't have an entrance fee but the museum and Sich have.
First of all, the view of the river Dnieper, the island itself, the dam and of the city with its hundreds of cooling towers and chimneys (and Lenin, of course) is amazing.
The museum offers a view into local history and the historical importance of the Zaporozhian Cossack host along with the famous reply to Sultan Mehmed IV which is an amazing painting (alas not the original) by itself and I had to get a magnet for my fridge. Excellent dioramas both of the Cossacks and the WW 2 battles of Zaporozhye.
The Cossack Sich is a place you MUST visit while in vicinity. It's a wooden fort/village built to represent the one destroyed by order of Catherine the Great. Inside you can see how the Cossacks lived, their weapons and even a few Cossack reenactors (actually descendants of the Cossacks) who have a show every hour? in which they demonstrate how to use their weapons. A lot of wooden souvenirs here.
The restaurant offers traditional Ukrainian dishes and we went overboard. Service was nice and food was plenty and tasty.
In the southern part of the island you have an excavation site of an XVIII century boat, Scythian burial mounds, Horse theater, flooded part of the island.
Took a lot of nice photos and this remains one of my favorite Ukrainian spots. The contrast between this old peaceful island and the industrial, chimney packed Zaporozhye is astounding.

“I am a nut about Cossacks !”
Reviewed November 30, 2013

I went to the Cossack theater and visited the Cossack museum. Both of great interest to me. Bogdan Khmelnitsky - a Cossack general - is one of my heroes so consider that when you see my rating. The Cossacks, like the Minutemen in the American revolution, were not exactly a formal army. Local farmers and merchants who took up arms to repel outsiders.

“Nature is sooo good”
Reviewed November 8, 2013

I liked the nature - plants and rocks, roads, museums, historical places, beaches, everything there is very beautiful. Better to have a guide for Hortitsa Island.
