Laico Lake Victoria Hotel
Ranked #10 of 30 Hotels in Entebbe
Reviewed November 17, 2012

We were travelling back to Uganda with family and booked into the Lake Victoria for the first 2 nights after landing in Entebbe. We arrived rather late on the first night and were met by the hotel representative, who after collecting a few more guests from the same flight, drove us to the hotel.

The hotel itself is fine, it has a great swimming pool, rooms are nice (but dont really have any character), and the grounds have some lovely tropical plants.. What let it down completely was the service, or the lack there-of...

We had booked 2 rooms, both had less towels than people staying... It was late when we checked in but we called down to reception to ask if someone could bring a couple more up. 3 calls and half an hour later I ended up walking down there and asking the rather dour women behind the desk if she could give me some, which she did, very reluctantly and slowly...

The next day was sunny so we spent the late morning by the pool which was great. We ordered lunch from the rather limited menu as well as a couple of drinks. The lunch took over an hour to arrive (it was only burgers and salads) and was very average. Dried burger patties and salads drowning in some kind of liquid, we did not eat much... What topped it off however was the drinks that we ordered with our food had still not arrived before or with the food, even after we had nicely asked the waiter a few times... They finally came when we had finished the food (probably 80 minutes after the order!), and we told the waiter that we no longer wanted them as we were heading back to the rooms. At this he got rather snarky and told us that this was impossible as he had already charged it to our room account!!!

There were a number of other little incidents like this, that in the end made us cancel our second night at this hotel and change to a wonderful little guest house that afternoon which had 10-times better service for a fraction of the price...

On reflection, from the number of United Nations personnel I saw checking in that morning I would venture the thought that the Lake Victoria Hotel is doing very nicely from their arrangement with this organisation and are not too worried about the rest of us common folk. If you want a "hotel" stay at the Lake Victoria. If you want service, a smile and a place that actually cares about how your stay is, go somewhere else.

It is a nice hotel with friendly staff...The meals are not wonderfull but I can say that they are ok...You can find some cheese, lots of bananas and pineapples in your breakfast...The garden of the hotel is very nice, you can see lots of tortoises there...Cleaning is good...Pool is not so big but enough to swim...Zoo is near the hotel and outside you can rent motorbikes which they called Bada Bada...It is very cheap...

The setting here is really lovely and relaxing, particularly the corniche overlooking the pool and palm trees. The food is reliably good, if a little unadventurous and designed for uneducated Western palettes. Room standard is very good with everything working and clean. Reception staff were particularly helpful and had excellent English. The pool is a real winner. It was a pleasure to stay here again (3rd time).

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the pool. Best views and light.

Stayed here on our last night after treking Gorilla's.. We wanted a pool, so we could relax and swim, which is why we picked this hotel.

I agree with other comments, the Visa machine, didn't work, we were very surprised we had to pay upfront, and not at the end.

Room, was good for us, AC worked a charm, room for us was clean.

Service was good, we got our wake up call, transfer to the airport, without any delay at all.. We found the staff friendly.

If staying one night after Gorilla treking, then this is a great place to unwind with a beer by the pool.

I stayed here for 4 nights in July 2012. The room was dingy and musty and smelled bad. The bath was remodeled, but the shower/tub leaked a lot every time I used it. Plenty of hot water. A/C worked - good thing because my room was on 1st floor with windows looking out at a much traveled dirt road. Windows did not lock. Power goes out frequently at night and the A/C beeps every time it goes back on which makes for poor sleep. Pool area nice and the grounds are well kept and pretty. Staff was disinterested at best. Service for meals was SLOW and the food was mediocre. Check-in/Check-out was painfully slow - they still have their reservations scribbled by hand in a notebook rather than in a computer, although they do use computers for payment/billing. The location is good for being able to access things in Entebbe - several restaurants within walking distance. Overall, if given a choice, I would not stay here again.

This hotel was owned by Gadafi and is still called the Libyan hotel. For that alone maybe if I''d known more I might not have booked here. Stayed here 2 nights. The carpets are dirty. The paint is peeling. The menu for food is English chips and pizza. The breakfast buffet however IS good. The roms were Ok and the beds comfy. There is air con if you want a noisy night. The curtains were hanging off and our winow looked out onto a row of old metal box containers in a row all along one side of the garden so i had no view of anything. The swimming pool complex is clean and the pool and loungers all fine. However, the staff were grumpy and expecting tips all the time. The one serving up breakfast was miserable and took so long to cook 2 fried eggs that we had finished our bacon beofre it was done. Their Visa machine was not working and the cashier had to be persuaded on check in ( at 9.00pm) to let us have our room because I did not have cash for one night deposit!! It is VERY expensive for what is is. . There are better places localy at far less price. You can come in and use their pool for a day rate if you want to lounge for the day. I'd go elsewhere next time

Room Tip: If you MUST stay here- check out the rooms not blocked by derelict box coantainers parked on the law...

I was here just for a weekend, a job meeting, socializing with friends and a visit to the zoo. The rooms are clean, good bed and bathroom and moscito free. The electricity goes off when you leave the room to protect the environs, hence it does'nt charge your gadgets - but the friendly staff easily gives you an extra key card for the switch. The pool is just super, by size, depth and jumps. The beddings and the restaurants are also good. A very good breakfast buffet although the resupply was too lazy. The restaurant andbar service was also a bit slow. Anyway this is my favorite in Entebbe so far, thanks.
