“A hotel of two halves”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2014

Half of this hotel has been renovated and half hasn't. The half which has been is quite pleasant and the rooms are fairly modern and well conditioned. Unfortunately, we were in the half which hasn't been renovated. The room was full of old furniture, very dated and had a couple of large cockroaches roaming around the bathroom. Overall, not a pleasant experience. Other than the rooms, the rest of the hotel is okay and the garden area has spectacular views over Lake Victoria.

The only remaining legacy is the name. Dirty rest rooms, miserable looking staff and to crown it all stale food. Have had several meals here but it only goes from bad to worse. The fruit desert always looks like it's been frozen for months and the vegetable salad looks horrible. I always avoid it in fear of food poisoning. Only visit if you want to prove me wrong

I have always favoured another hotel in Entebbe, but through the course of work we were booked to stay here at the once charming Botanical. I say once, because I am sure in it's heyday, it was a marvellous establishment with the spacious rooms, wood panelled walls and lush tropical gardens. It has been caught in a time warp and very little has been done to modernise the facility or give the old girl a face lift.

Lets start at the beginning. I was collected from the airport from a courteous sign bearer and driven to the hotel. On arrival the young girl behind the counter at reception was pleasant but not too clued up on the stay and the billing as per my reservation. The room I was allocated was on the first floor which was found after a walk through a labyrinth of passages and stairs. The elevators are out of order, so stairs it was. The room was clean, and the size enormous. An 8x8 room with a bed big enough for a small Ugandan village to sleep on. The mattress was probably THE most uncomfortable that I have slept on since Madagascar 2010. But the aircon is a win. It could make snow cones from the beads of sweat you produce from the stair climb....

The bathroom has obviously been redone, as the twin basins in the vanity were Porn Star Red with glitter, so out of context to the yellow and grey tiling of the walls. Kitch would be an understatement!!! The shower had no the water pressure, so much so that the dual control shower only allowed me to use the hand held extension for washing. When toggled back to spout from the main shower head which is elevated above the head, it produced a trickle of water, insufficient to wet a hand cloth.

The food was not great. The team of international delegates actually boycotted the lunch on the second day in favour of eating offsite as the food was so bad. The only evening meal I had was reminiscent of my army days, concocted by a non qualified infantry man in the middle of the trenches. It was bad. The buffet which was set up in an area that made seeing your selection difficult through low light was interesting. The selection of the day had become dried out and the "lamb" was tough and fatty. The rest of the selection did not look appetising at all. The only redemption is that on my final bill at checkout, they had not charged me for dinner. I didn't let them know!!!

I think the best thing that the imperial hotel could do is close down the place, consider a revamp and train their staff.

Arrived here with a little trepidation seeing some of the negative reviews. Yes , there were some signs of decay, eg missing tiles around the swimming pool, disorganised catering with the starter arriving 15 minutes after the wrong main course. The hotel however had lovely views over the Lake Victoria with spacious gardens and very spacious rooms. Staff were helpful and dis their best to make a conference of 100+ happy.

Internet worked ok but was a bit innefficient, one had to buy a pass every day, would have been better to have had a pass for the whole week. More could be made of the water font eg . Make canoes available for hire.

Like most large hotels in this region, they have a cash infusion from a presidential visit and then the place falls a part from there on. Rooms are decent but bathrooms have broken fixtures and shower heads that do not work. Over priced 2 star hotel with mediocre food that is greatly over priced for quality.

Stayed here for 3 nights the prices were affordable the rooms are very spacious and tastefully furnished. Especially impressive were the bathrooms and the closets. It is centrally located a few minutes walk to the town which was good.
The only downside were the lake flies that swarm esp during the night, the food was not creative at all, it was exactly the same for the entire 3 days. Wi Fi too was for sale at $5 for 24hrs.
Despite all that it is a good place to visit for a short stay

Room Tip: Rooms facing the lake are the best

Stayed here during a 5 day conference. Rooms were cleaned well. Had to pay extra $10 to access internet, a service I think can be covered by the room rates which are over $100. The food was good. Newspapers were never brought to the rooms. On one occasion, the room key failed to open but this was swapped with another key. A lady knocked at the room door every evening to ask if it was ok to spray an insecticide, something that should have been done at cleaning time before the guest comes into the room. The locker cabins for the health club where the swimming pool is were not functional, you leave your valuables with the attendant. No sandals were available in the health club. The carpet in the corridor is stuffy.

The gardens are good. the view is excellent with sight of blue monkeys in the morning hours.
