The location overlooking the Black Sea is spectacular. The change from a museum to a mosque has had some negative impacts. The grounds are no longer well-maintained. Some of the best artwork is now covered. While it no longer has an entrance fee, it is now a location for people of bad intentions. The architecture is still impressive. And it is a truly historic site. But, it no longer has the same appeal. Financial investment and better management can still bring back the beauty.

It was really excellent!! Frescas is everywhere. But unfortunately it is mosque right now. Inside it there are interesting frescas but it's impossible to see them :/
Advice to go there!! Have a nice trip ;)

Admission is free, there is only a very small part of the church open to tourists...as of June 2013, the church is now an active mosque. The frescoes visible in the open part are nice to look at but have very little explanation. The building itself is a nice example of architecture. note: I am not sure if the church-turned-mosque is just for the Ramadan season or if it is a permanent change...it would be sad if the church/mosque was permanently closed to tourists, as there seems to be a mosque on every corner and Turkey, in the past anyway, had really pushed for the tourist business. I hope this isn't a sign of the direction the current government is going in.

We loved the vibrant colors and patterns of the frescoes! It is not a commercialized spot, so it felt laid back and intimate.

Has been turned back into mosque by local government - Frescoes now covered up by curtains.
Was main historical site of Trabzon - Trabzon now hardly worth a visit.
